Did you send anything since the hold? Update or letter of intent/interest?

I'm drafting a letter now. The more schools I visit the more I love Case.

If you were referring to me, then yes i did. I sent two letters. One generic "i like your school" and here are some updates on me and then a more specific tailored letter with my grades, which were good. I really feel my letters have been instrumental in not only getting in at case, but getting some late interviews at some really good schools.

But i loved case despite the lack-luster facilities. It is a great school with some great staff. I would be very happy to go there.

Are there any accepted applicants to the University Program out there who have received invitations to apply for the CWRU merit scholarships? They had already been extended by this time last year, so I would rather know for sure that I won't be getting one now than be faced with uncertainty for several months.

Thank you in advance.

Disappointing for me to hear, but at least now I know. Thanks for the reply!

Out of curiosity, are you waiting until March for an application/invitation of some sort or an actual decision on a scholarship?

an extra application will be released in march. they said decisions would be made mid-april

Interesting, thank you for the information.

Best of luck to you with the scholarship application!

i still haven't gotten my packet . though iapply notified me of admissions last week. boo 🙁. maybe it wassss a mistake after all!

There's a packet? All I got was a thin letter.👍

I didn't really get a packet. It was in a normal sized letter envelope but a little bit more stuffed than usual. 😛

Don't worry. All you have to do is make sure to send back the confirmation of acceptance, and then send in your transcripts.

Anyone else slightly annoyed that we have to buy one of their selected laptops? I'm a tech junkie so I'm not happy that I have to choose between a dell or a mac. 🙁

I too was just accepted yesterday after being on hold since October. So excited! 😀

For those wondering, I also sent an update letter in November.

Is there a date we have to send in transcripts by? Or can we wait until the semester is over??

Yeah, it's not the best offering ever. I, on the other hand, was looking for an excuse to spring for a MacBook Pro. Not thrilled about having to buy another external. I've already got more than a TB in external drives....

We have to buy one of them?? i didnt know that!! I was under the impression that we could bring anything, as long as it was 'tech worthy' by their standards.....rite???????????????

I think we can just wait till the semester's over...

Nice try!

i would have to wait until the semester is over since my transcript won't have proof of a completed bachelor's until then

and i did see a page somewhere that said you could bring your own laptop as long as it matched the specifications. i'll post once i find it again. it would be nice if we could ask a current student if they knew the laptop situation of their class.

Mr. Essman was saying when I interviewed that was their old policy, but this year they would be forcing everyone to buy new ones.

oh wells. i'm glad i waited to buy a new laptop anyway. i don't wanna cause problems either 😳

Thats such bs. I understand the need to homogeneity among users, but to specify laptop models is crazy. I would get a macbookpro, but what if i wanted a pc for say gaming? Those dell models they offer suck as gaming machines. It is crazy to be so intrusive on laptops. I understand they want everyone to have a good laptop to run their software, but i can assure you any reasonably competent laptop can run case's software.

Oh well, apple here i come!

do you think they limit what software you can install?

You do have to purchase a machine through the Med School because all the exams and curriculum material are electronic. Letting Case take care of all of your computer woes is a way to avoid the headache that you will have if you try to argue and bring your own computer.

That being said, you can email the technology director (David Pilasky) and ask him about being an exception. If Christian said they're going to enforce new laptops, chances are that he's right and you'll end up buying one of the approved machines.

Once the software is configured onto your machines, you receive them during Orientation Week in July. After that point, it's your personal machine and you can install/uninstall stuff as you see fit. If something breaks/starts going haywire, the tech department will cover all of your problems, no matter what you've installed. They're even nice enough to give you a loaner if the fix takes more than a couple of hours. 🙂

Uhm, I'm sorry that the medical school doesn't prioritize gaming laptops? It's not like you can't use your current computer in addition to whatever model you get from Case. The only times you're required to use their computers is during examinations. I can't emphasize enough that if you feel like this is something that really concerns you, talk to the Tech Department and see if they can come up with a solution to fit your needs. No need to pick your medical schools based on what laptops you can use...

The reason they specify laptop models, just fyi, is because they can keep all the parts on hand so even if you have a hardware malfunction, they can just swap it out and give you a new one right away. If people had 100 different models (even within just one company), they wouldn't be able to keep stock of all the parts.

I have nothing productive to add to your post.

I just wanted to say that I love and need to own whatever that animal is in your avatar.

I have a MacBook Pro already. Any chance I can just give it to the tech guys and they can install / do whatever they want with it and I don't have to drop 2 grand?

@Linguini: If you find somewhere that breeds or sells them, I would buy four.

There's always a chance - it's Case, where it's all about flexibility. Email [email protected] and ask him. You'll have to tell him all the specs/how old it is etc, but there's always a chance. Again, people in previous classes have been allowed to keep their computers but the policy is leaning towards standardization so I can't say anything with 100% confidence.

Well, at least the MacBookPro doesn't have an integrated graphics card.👍

The second link you posted (the one relevant to us, i.e. 2013) clearly states that we have to buy one of the five models they have chosen. We can't even have an upgraded HDD!! Seriously?

Mr. Essman was saying when I interviewed that was their old policy, but this year they would be forcing everyone to buy new ones.

Yup.

Well it's really unfortunate for those of us who are proficient, and make a lifestyle hobby out of building, customizing and troubleshooting computers. This would be like if you were a tennis player and the school said "You have to buy a "Wilson" tennis racket, and it has to be exactly "this" model. I was so looking forward to rewarding myself with a custom built desktop and a custom lappy of my choosing. 🙁

Take it from someone who is a computer technician, that this is only partially true. Yes, between different companies it would be impossible to keep parts on hand, but not within the same company or even the same line of laptops. As long as the mobo is the same, it's not too much of a problem. Most things in computing nowadays are modular, and laptops are heading that way pretty quickly.

For instance: Hard disks are almost completely inter-compatible within the same interface. You can literally switch out one drive for another no problem. It does not have to be the same drive, and it doesn't even require different drivers. The plug just has to fit in the hole. There is no reason not to let us upgrade HDDs beyond institutional savings. Video cards are another example. Beyond installing drivers (which are standard up to last years model line for Geforce and ATI on all windows installs) there is no difficulty in switching them out.

The problem is that for some of us, computing is a legitimate hobby/interest that we take pretty seriously, and since its expensive we can only spend so much on our computing costs. I get that they want to standardize things, and I understand why, but its unfortunate because it handicaps those of us who are computer nerds that don't have a lot of money. 🙁

All of what you said is accurate. I was just parroting back the department's stance on why they standardize laptop models. That's why I keep saying if this means a whole lot to you, feel free to email and ask their rationale etc. Maybe if you're going with the same model, they'll let you upgrade some of the features? I don't work for them, so I don't know. But it never hurts to ask. 🙂

True. 😛 And I'm about to e-mail. 🙂

Let me know what they say. I am pretty curious to see why they picked the Dell models they did. I guess i understand the tablet pc, but the others dells seem like, well......

Yeah I don't know either. I also don't understand the Quadro pick. I believe that in this cycle of vid cards they are still way more expensive than an equivalent geforce and all they do is enable 3D acceleration in 3D design/rendeing programs. The hardware is identical to the geforce counterpart with the firmware different.

Do you guys think it's a good idea to go with a Mac just to try something new lol.. or will I end up just kicking myself for trying to get something just b/c it's cool and trendy

I think i am going with a macbookpro if i go to case. The screen size is biggest and features are good compared to what you would be getting with the dell models. They don't have integrated graphics and are pretty reliable machines.

Besides, you must admit they are sexy.

holy smokes, i dont understand half of this technobabble!😱 lol.

Last one meant that you can play 3D accelerated games on it.😀

(When you can trick yourself into thinking you have the time.)

So...anyone else here eagerly waiting for Monday's (2/2) committee meeting results? I'm praying for good news so I won't have to burn more cash on airplane tickets....Case is definitely a top choice...😛😛

Hey a girl can dream can't she....... (even though i'm a guy)

I am more concerned in getting a 17 inch macbook pro, they only have the 15 as an option.

do you know how long after the meeting until they let us know?

You should find out on the Wednesday after the committee meets.

Also, I was thinking of just getting the cheapest Dell laptop and using that exclusively for school and mobile computing (i.e. when at the library, etc.) and picking up an used/refurb iMac or something to use at home. I'd rather do that then spend $2500 on a single MacBook Pro. I liked last generation's MBP better than this one's for sure.

seriously guys, are we even gonna have TIME to play games? i mean, im itching to get my hands on starcraft 2 same just as bad as the other guy, but i know that i if start, ill never stop, lol. i think ill purposely go for the crappiest one, just so i wont be able to install the latest games..!!!

Honestly probably not a whole lot, but we will have some free time, so its nice to have the option. During breaks, summers, and when i have some free time it would be nice to have the luxury of putting some hours in to starcraft if nothing else is going on.

Don't worry about it. That's what your brand new PS3 is for!

...well, not the Starcraft...

yeah i considered getting a console to game on since console games arent as time consuming as pc games. by that i mean, with most console games you switch on the system and jump right in. pc games tend to require alot more time and are more involved. but im a pc gamer at heart. by the way guys, we ought to move some of this traffic over to the class of case med 2013 allopathic thread

does anybody know when the CCLCM adcom is going to select their 2014 class? people were saying that they were supposed to select half in december and half in february, but i don't think anything happened in december.

My take on the situation is that if you cry loud enough, you can get your way. Especially to the user who mentioned having a MacBook Pro and not wanting to buy a new computer.

On the other hand, I love love love my MacLife iPersonality, and even I opted for the cheap Dell. This is your school computer, after all -- it's meant to be your workhorse. The Dell warranty is (far) superior to Apple's, and having a PC is 1000% (that's one thousand percent!) more convenient when it comes to test time. Personally, I prefer having my personal computer separate from my work computer. But then again, I am a computer geek with a dozen computers, so one more around the house isn't any big deal... just more clutter.

And SilverMoon, I'm not sure I would post Pilasky's email address like that, without some sort of obfuscation (example: david[dot]pilasky[at]case[dot]edu). This is the era of web-crawling spam bots, after all 🙂

Congrats to all of you who are class of 2013! I'll meet those of you who come to 2nd Look.

they are accepting in 3 bunches. 2 already happened, and they filled 22-3 of 32 spots. The remaining 9-10 people will hear on Feb. 17th or a day/two after.
