thanks sflo! ur the best! PUERTO RICOOOOOO haha represent.

When I visited Cornell, there was a second-year who came to talk to us who was from Puerto Rico, and she was interested in community medicine/serving underserved populations. She really seemed to love Cornell. She felt like she was surprised by the number of opportunities Cornell had for service working with the underserved.

Just thought I'd add.

Hi Lyss, Congrats! I also got a totally unexpected early acceptance from Cornell on Friday (I didn't even know they did that... maybe I´m out of the loop, but that's sort of on purpose cause I'm not interested in being a stressed-out applicant waiting at my inbox or mailbox every day!). Anyway, I like Cornell a lot (nyc, pbl, i know some good people there, low-stress), but my main concern is the same one you stressed--lack of focus on underserved, and being in one of the richest zip codes in Manhattan. They stressed on the tour that they get a diverse population from all over NYC. I worked at Cornell a few years back and can vouch for this, at least in certain units where people come from hospitals that for instance don't to angioplasty, so there were lots of hispanic patients on the telemetry ward where I was working (on a study of hispanic heart disease patients). One of my interviewers tried to stress that they do lots of community-based work, are interested in cultural aspects of medicine, etc. He seemed to be trying to sell the school to me, but I wasn't sure if I bought it; outside of his particular group I don't think many others at Cornell do that kind of work. For this reason I am very interested in Mt. Sinai, among the nyc schools--not only is it in a very diverse neighborhood (particularly being on the border of UES and East Harlem, I think seeing both those worlds at once will make for a fabulous education), but they also actually do a lot of great work in the community. A former coworker of mine currently studying at Cornell wanted to go the Sinai for the same reason but was rejected there. He is not so thrilled with Cornell, disappointed in the lack of work in the community and with undeserved pops, but still doing well there and a fairly happy med student in general. I think that if we work at it you can find interesting faculty and projects to work with anywhere, and some of the coolest community projects that come out med schools are student initiatives... so maybe it's time more of us interested in the underserved go to Cornell and change it from the inside!

Anyway, that is my two cents, and where my thinking is at this point (I only just interviewed recently at Sinai so haven't heard back yet from them). I would love to hear more about what you think of Cornell in this respect, if you've spoken to current students there about this, etc.

Again, congrats and maybe we'll be seeing each other next August!

krs881, I definitely agree with you on that one. Mt. Sinai is more community-service oriented when compared to Cornell. Both schools are great, but I personally don't like Cornell's teaching style (mostly CBL-learning), but I agree that Cornell should step up a notch and get more involved with "underserved pops."

Congrats to everyone! It's very exciting to hear people getting accepted. I was in the end of March group, but also interviewed at the end of March.

Feel free to send me a message if you have questions or need any help with your decisions. There's no free sandwich, but I'm still willing to help.

On the two topics that came up in the last few posts:
- PBL is 4.5 hours a week. It is an adjunct to what we learn in lecture and labs. Cornell is very proud of it's PBL program and puts a lot of effort into making it work very well.
- 10021 is a very rich zip code. But our patients come from everywhere to get the amazing care that NYPH offers. You will see everything. And if you want more urban and more underserved, there are dozens of hospitals throughout the burroughs that students rotate through. Even as a second year I spend my clinical afternoon each week at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx.

Thanks so much for your responses. It is good to start hearing more about what is going on at Cornell. I am definitely going to try to get in touch with Dr. Miller. Happy holidays and good luck to everyone in the rest of "app" season!

Hi there,

Does anyone know (from last year, or otherwise) if anyone's been rejected post-interview in December or are given out in March ? Forgive me if I've asked this before, it's been a LONG semester!

Tx 🙂

DrLys, I think we may have interviewed on the same day (10/28). I got the e-mail acceptance around the same time. Congrats to you!

From my interview (I know this info may be a tad late), I gathered that despite the rich NYC zip code, many students shadow at hospitals in other, less-affluent parts of NYC, which allows for diverse experiences. Also, on Thursdays (I think), students have an opportunity to shadow in a neighborhood/field of choice. This attracted me to Cornell because I really wanted to work with the LGBTQ community. They said I would have an opportunity to do so. I would just have to make the initiative. Fair enough.

One qualm I have, however, is the limited international opportunities compared to other med schools. I really want to shadow in Israel, but I don't think Cornell accommodates for that because of its focus on third-world countries, which isn't a bad thing. I just really want to go to Israel and get clinical experience there for a few months. oh well.

Congrats to everyone else who got in! Maybe we should make plans to meet during the second look? And for others, your time will come! The hardest part of the app process is the anxiety that comes from comparing yourself to others. As a pre-med advisor, I saw that all the time. I would avoid that at all costs -- my two cents: focus on yourself and your successes.

i dont know about cornell wolverinedoc, but i know many other schools aer willing to work wiht you to set up an international adventure in a place they dont yet have a program. maybe something to ask if they have a second look or something?

Yes we did interview together & i think I know who you were. Congrats!!! We had a lot of fun on our interview day 🙂 Hopefully I'll see you at second look.

As far as the international opportunities I would message one of the students or contact their office to get more information. While I was there I know the deans I spoke with were really interested in students going abroad & creating more & more international opportunities. If you find out anything let us know!

When I interviewed, they made it seem like Cornell was top notch for international health opportunities. I would call them and see if there is anything available in Israel. I can't imagine that you wouldn't be able to create a program over there. Good luck!

anyone know when cornell stops interviewing?

most of the Ivies go till February, no?

On a side note, I just got a call from my faculty interviewer yesterday! He was super excited to congratulate me for having been accepted-- he gave me his personal cell phone number and said that I could shadow him and get into the OR whenever I want (I go to school like an hour away from NYC). I haven't even decided if I am going there and they're already being awesome about offering opportunities at the school! Also, for everyone who also just got accepted in December, we all must have really impressed the people at Weill-- he said we're the "creme of the crop" and that he's sure Cornell will face intense competition from other schools to get us to go there (CORNELL IS SO GREAT THOUGH! THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PUT UP A TOUGH FIGHT)! WooHoo! 🙂😀🙂😀

did anyone interviewing on 12/16 receive a december acceptance? they mentioned they were having a committee meeting that night, but im not sure if our applications were reviewed that very night as well.

Hey DrLyss, I say your picture in the pre-med picture thread and I interviewed with you! And with WolverineDoc, too. I was the guy wearing the black long johns underneath my suit... remember when wolverinedoc said he thought my legs were "really dark and smooth?" lol. that was me.

anyway, congratulations to both of you for getting accepted! cornell is such an awesome school. i unfortunately didn't get anything so i'm assuming they're giving me the boot in march since i interviewed with you guys, but it's OK, they can't accept all of us... you guys are awesome people and i'm sure you'll make outstanding physicians.

and wolverinedoc, i'm also really interested in international programs and i remember my interviewer said you can create any program you want and cornell will likely fund it, as long as it has a point and isn't outrageous, of course. cornell is one of the best schools to go to if you want a focus on internationalism.

hahaha I think I remember! Don't fret my pet they are just saving the best for last!

We had a great bunch on our interview day. I had so much fun! Some of my friends that interviewed at Cornell said the crowd could be a little stiff but everyone was so friendly and funny.

edit: just peeped your mdapps and I definitely remember. I think I owe you a lil italy cannoli right? =)

CaptainMarvel! I remember you! How awesome that the three of us finally re-meet through SDN! and speaking of food, we talked of Giordano's Chicago deep dish pizza, correct?

Thanks for your note on the international programs, Captain. I'll definitely make sure to research what I can to make an Israeli program possible. Now, what I need to do is listen to more Hebrew CD's! :-D

Good luck to you with your applications! You know you still have a chance at Cornell. I suggest sending the admissions office a letter of interest. Correspondence conquers all! When in January are you visiting NYC? I'm also visiting at that time, from Jan 6-10. However, make sure you bring many more long johns. You thought NYC was cold in October... wait until you see how cold it is in January.

On a random note, DrLys, I saw your pictures too, and your "redhead" is cute. lol

The whole international thing was what stood out most. I was under the impression that everyone gets $3000 to go wherever they want in the world that summer after first year? Maybe given Israel's unique situation, it wouldn't be possible to use the money anyway, but the most positive impression of Cornell for me was that ease of funding access.

Hey guys, I'm a little concerned because I haven't received an interview yet. I've been interviewing at three other schools but Cornell hasn't said anything yet. I was complete around late Oct. So I guess it's safe to say I prob won't get an interview right???? (NYU is also another one of my schools who haven't said a peep...whats the deal with New York schools!!! LOL)

🙁

If you're planning on being in the area soon, let them know. I was complete for a while until i sent the 'in the area' email and subsequently received an invite hours later.

Well I have my Boston University interview January 12 so I guess that's considered 'in the area' right? I suppose it wouldn't hurt 🙂 Thanks bunches!

OMG!!:banana:SO I OFFICIALLY LOVE YOU! I got an interview invite!! I guess they were planning on giving me one all along and I didn't realize it. They had some last minute openings around the date that I said I would be there. Thank you so much! You are amaaaaazing!!!😍

AHH! So happy for you! That's incredible that it worked so quickly! Good luck on your interview! Woohoo!

It's one of my top choices. It's actually tied with Boston U 😀 Well I'm absolutely ecstatic yet nervous. Can anyone tell me the overall vibe of the interview day...like is it pretty nerve-wracking with tricky, stressful questions or did you find it to be pretty cool and calm?

Oh and another thing, does anyone know if they tend to award a lot of merit scholarships?? That would be kinda sweet...but I guess I'm thinking WAaAAAY to far ahead, I gotta get accepted first! LOL:laugh:

I, too, was wondering anyone who was accepted in December was offered a merit scholarship.

We definitely did talk about Giordano's... one of the best pizza places in the US and probably the world. I think we also talked about that other famous pizza place in NYC whose name I forgot; it's supposedly the first pizza joint to open in the US. Lombardi's! That's what it's called, I think. I had such high hopes for that pizza, but it was just pretty good, nothing spectacular.

I'm actually going to bein NYC Jan7-11! I'm totally down to meet up with you and DrLyss if you guys are down.

Speaking of cold weather, I think it snows in NYC, right? Those long johns are definitely coming with me.

All their aid is need-based IIRC

Random question: has anyone been accepted after sending an "in the area" notice?
Happy New Year!

happy new year everyone!!

lol, if I can get accepted just by sending an "in the area" email, I think I would have done it by now.

giordanos is in nyc?

haha it does snow. right now its actually 18F outside.. i think one of the coldest days we have had this winter as of now.

i wanna meet up with SDNers but i will be away from jan 5 - 12 but maybe we should start a thread and see if anyone wants to meet up jan 13 or later?

lol, yea it seems like everyone who sent an "in the area" email got an invite the next day! I wish other schools would do that 🙁

Giordano's is in Chicago. I would think there's many SDNers from NYC so I'm sure a bunch would be willing to meet up. Sucks we can't do it while I'm there.

If you look earlier in the thread, you'll see a bunch of people send the "in the area" e-mail and not get an invite, but a "we're still reviewing your application" e-mail, which was depressing for many. 🙁

and I'd love to meet up in NYC, CaptainMarvel & DRLys. Are you going to be on Manhattan, Captain? I'm staying near Harlem, I think.

how about starting a separate thread? lol :woot:

Hey guys,

After months of lurking on this thread, I have finally decided to post because I miraculously received an interview invitation from Cornell, which is my top choice, dream school. I am definitely obsessed with this school and I have wanted to go here pretty much since I was out of the womb (haha, I know, that's pretty hyperbolic, but as you can tell I realllllly love Cornell). In any case, my praying has paid off, but I am very well aware of the act that obtaining an interview invitation is only the first step. So, I was wondering if any of you guys would be willing to provide some feedback on your interviews and tips. Feel free to PM me if that's better for you. I am only asking because a) there are not a lot recent entries on the interview feedback thread b) I have gone through a lot of crap, especially recently, and I do not want to screw up this amazing opportunity that God has given me c) I know I'll be really happy at Cornell and without crying a river, I really need to be at an institution where I will be happy. Sorry for the mini-essay, I'm just so unbelievably excited and nervous! Thanks in advance for the feedback and help, I really appreciate it 🙂
dreamer, I sent you a PM but realized this after. Somehow my interview feedback for Cornell has mysteriously disappeared, but I can't remember the specific questions I had so if anyone has questions just PM me and I can give you my interview day impressions. good luck all!

haha yea we talked a lot of food! LoL if you go to Cornell you can meet my redhead! This is a pitch to everyone who wants to meet a red head haha.

I live in NY so I'm always down for a SDN reunion. I think there are a lot of us here.

Captain Marvel & Wolverine, PM me and we can set up something for us the next time both of you are in NYC. You guys were great & I'd love to chill again. Oh and Captain definitely send a Letter of interest if you really want Cornell. I'm sure you won't have any issues you are going to have lots of choices!

make a separate thread!!! i would definitely love to join too. im in nyc too! 😛(although going away until jan 12)

I, too, was wondering anyone who was accepted in December was offered a merit scholarship.

Cornell does not give merit scholarships. Darn Ivy tradition and whatnot 🙄 I have also heard that their financial aid is not very negotiable.

I'm not sure how negotiable it is but I heard since they have lots of money it is usually pretty generous.

Well that's good to know. The students I talked to (well, they were the ones who brought it up, so probably some sample bias) focused mostly on the non-negotiable part.

Do you guys think non-acceptance in December for early interviewees is a silent waitlist/rejection coming in March?

Do you guys think non-acceptance in December for early interviewees is a silent waitlist/rejection coming in March?

No 🙄 They only accept about 20 people in Dec out of 150ish (I think, hence the ish). By the laws of probability they have to accept some pre-Dec interviewees come March.

Conversely, if we interviewed after the December acceptances, does that mean we have a better chance of getting in come March? 😕

Cornell actually accepts around 200-220 people in order to fill their class of 100 students. I wouldn't be worried if you weren't accepted in December. The vast majority find out in March. If not, there's always hope for the waitlist.

yup. It's only like 12 people in december. You have to be super super cool like Lyss to make the cut
