I don't think it's the same, since if people decline their acceptances then they'll pull off the waitlist...but for me it says they'll re-evaluate my application in the Spring....
Wow I really thought they meant the same thing too!! I got Hold for spring consideration too....can anyone shed some light on what a candidate can/should do if they get this hold for spring consideration...do you just wait? do you send an update letter?...Thanks

Update letters or Letters of Interests definitely help, if you tell the Adcom that you really felt like you belong at this school and that you fit in really well with the students, then they will read your letter at their committee meeting and it may sway the opinions of the adcom members.

On Campus Housing:
Is anyone considering living in the residence halls? I want to get a single occupancy room or studio apt. What do you guys think? I am also willing to find a roommate from SDN - PM me if you're interested.

Bearded, I am also thinking of getting a single, but am torn betw a standard or a studio...

Hey (New here). I was wondering if downstate notifies you electronically (or is there a way the check) on your status (accepted, rejected, waitlisted, etc...). The status page at the moment seems useless. I ask because I'm supposed to hear back this week or the next (friend of mine interview week before me and he got his mail last week) but my parents are out of the country and i have no one to check the mail back home, which is 4 hours away from me.

As far as I know, checking your mail is the only way. I just happened to call about my status the day before I received my acceptance package in the mail and they wouldn't tell me anything. You might see a change in your online status page though, maybe in the form of a new box labeled "acceptance deposit" or something similar. The accepted folks should be able to confirm this.

Anyone else get their finaid from here yet? I just did, got like a 6k disadvantaged scholarship :S OOS tuition (for 1 yr at least) and only 6k in aid--looks like ill be letting this one go.

Since you share a bathroom with people in the neighboring standard room, it's not much different from the studio. I think I'd be fine just living in the standard room, as long as its a single.

6K is not bad considering it's a state school! And it's 40k for OOSers only for the first year as you said.. the tuition becomes 20k/year after that. It's really not a bad offer. But I see you also have a UCSD acceptance, so you've got some amazing options.

Disadvantaged scholarship is based on financial need? I'm really wondering what kind of package they'll give me, I sent my FAFSA a few weeks ago and I'm eagerly awaiting the offer!

Thanks Dr. Roboto. I hope your right about that new box, otherwise i might have take a field trip back home just to check the mail 🙁

There are lots of new boxes, having to do with immunizations, physician exam, white coat form, college transcripts, CPR certification etc. It might just take a bit of time to show up though after the acceptance letter goes out.

Speaking for myself, the "acceptance deposit" box on the status page didn't show up until they received my deposit check (received a snail mail letter confirming it the day after the box showed up) that I sent in along with the acceptance form.

something else to keep in my mind is that studios have a kitchen and standard rooms do not

I know! but since I don't cook much that's fine, also the showers are located on the floor, outside of your room.

how long was your friend waiting, 8 weeks or more? Thanks!

Bah still no word from downstate (pre-interview). Sent in the fall grades like they asked (4.0), and a LOI, but still no word. The status check page doesn't provide any useful information.

Anyone else in the same boat? Does calling the admissions office accomplish anything?

Edit: This is post 666 in this thread. Not a good sign for me is it?

Did anyone else who filed a FAFSA receive their financial aid package yet?

hmm..when did you receive your acceptance?

first week of november. i don't think it depends on when you get your acceptance. i think it depends on when you submitted your fafsa. i submitted mine in the third week of jan... so i'm actually surprised they decided on an award so quickly. it's prob just taking them time to process everything, so i'm sure you'll get yours soon.

I interviewed a bit earlier and am still waiting.:luck:

I had a great interview yesterday (2/23), and then at the very end, after the interviewing doc typed my answers to the required questions into the computer, he asked about my school (which specifically accepts young students.) I assumed he knew that I was young from reading my application, but apparently, he didn't.

When he found out, he said that he was almost sure the school would want me to take another year or two, and proceeded to strongly discourage me from attending any medical schools I might be accepted at. :bang:

He said he wouldn't change anything he'd written, but I don't know if the interviewer has much say past that.

I'm not sure why they would have bothered to interview me if they are only planning to tell me that I am too young and should try again later. I hope this doesn't affect my chances, but I'm worried it will.

Disclaimer: I am a random second year and have no knowledge of the admissions process beyond what I gathered going through it myself.

I don't think you have to worry too much about what your interviewer thinks of your age. Every applicant has to go through a committee and get voted on, so maybe your interviewer thinks one way but most others think differently?

By young, i'm assuming you're 21 or younger (I'm guessing younger)... In my entering class (2007.. I'm MS2), we had an 18 year old who was also out of state. I think the youngest entering MS1 this year was 19 if I'm not mistaken... not sure though. Also, if you look on this website: http://sls.downstate.edu/admissions/medicine/programs/class_profile.html the average age of matriculation is about ~24. I was 20 when I applied and 21 when I got in and here I am 🙂

Hi... Are there any current students here who know of anyone that got into the program from a HOLD??? Also, were they waitlisted first and did they find out by May?...

Hey,

I'm a second year. I can't speak for anyone else, but I got in here after a pre-interview hold. I interviewed in January and got in end of Feb/first week of March.

Has anyone heard about merit scholarships from Downstate yet? Do you know when these are awarded?

Has anyone who interviewed late in December heard back from Downstate yet?

Woohoo! got the acceptance packet in the mail today.
(interviewed 12/16/08)

Good luck to those still waiting to hear back!! :luck:

I also got good news today, and I interviewed before you Clairvoyance.

okay so i haven't heard a WORD from these guys since i applied... should i assume i got rejected? not even an interview invite...

so i interviewed on 12/18. and i haven't gotten anything in the mail. but today, i got an email from the admissions office that started with dear accepted applicant and went on to talk about research opportunities. so that probably means i got in but the mail is slow?

possibly or the letter could have gotten lost. Congrats on getting in🙂. Wait a couple days and if nothing comes in the mail then call/email the school b/c they might have important info in the acceptance letter that you're missing (like something about sending a deposit to hold your spot).

that's a pleasant way to get an acceptance.

That happened to me too (except it was an e-mail telling me about the MPH program). I called and they told me I'd hear soon and the following day I got the official mailed acceptance. So, it's probably a pretty good sign 👍

i finally got the acceptance in the mail! it's my first acceptance so far so theres so much pressure off now. it was postmarked march 10, so it's not really the mail carrier's fault. maybe they just added me to the mailing list fast

Okay so I called downstate asking if my application has been reviewed. The woman told me that I should have recieved something in the mail that was sent out at the beginning of the month. Despite knowing that I should have recieved something in the mail, they would not tell me what the mailing said and they would not even e-mail it to me. They only assured me that they would send it out again.

Gah this isn't going to be good for me is it.

Since you didn't receive an interview, I'm afraid it doesn't bode well.

Hi guys,

I interviewed at downstate 6 months ago. I am trying to decide between schools. I was wondering if Downstate was P/F for the first two years or if it was on a regular grading system?

Thanks in advance!
