I interviewed in January... and just called to find out my application was placed in the "acceptance range."

My heart skipped a beat there when I heard the word acceptance... does anyone know what kind of WL movement to except at Tulane?
 
I got in!!!! First allopathic acceptance! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had resolved to stop calling, because I've been doing status checks for awhile now and I figured they'd finally reject me just for being obnoxious -- except my morning was (until now) going REALLY badly, so I figured I would call Tulane and either (a) be just as annoyed and pissed off as I was before, due to no decision or waitlist/rejection, or (b) be ELATED (which I am, in case you can't tell)

ej, I am sorry to hear about your wait-list! Wait lists are completely poopy and I hate them (I am currently on three, and I'm sure as more schools get back to me that number will grow). Hopefully there will be some WL movement this year!

Tulane was my first acceptance too and I rememeber how on top of the world I felt.

I noticed in your mdapps, you have interviewed at all kinds of schools. Do you think you're likely to attend Tulane? I LOVED Tulane however I'm still weighing it against GW (accepted) and UCI (will hear back in 2-3 weeks).

I would say the chances are fairly good, assuming I get into other schools. I would definitely choose it over the osteopathic schools (for various reasons), and I will probably end up withdrawing from some of the other allopathic schools I've applied to. I really liked Rochester (wait-list) and BU (no news yet) as well, so I'd like to see what happens with those places. And if UMass let me in, I'd have a hard time saying no to IS tuition, but I think I liked Tulane more as a school...

Funny you should mention GW; before I went on any interviews, GW and Tulane were the places I really liked on paper. I'm pretty sure GW isn't going to happen because my grad school LOR wasn't from my department chair, but that's okay 🙂

Any thoughts as to which school you'll ultimately end up at?

I wasn't going to call and just wait for the mail, but I couldn't focus this morning and figured I should just call. Glad I made that decision!

I will definitely be attending Tulane in the fall, and I'm really excited to meet everyone!!!

Just as an FYI, Tulane is officially done interviewing people. The last interview date was 01/20/09. Final decisions are to be made the first week of March.

I interviewed on 01/16 and loved the school. The people were the real selling point.

Are you sure? Because I'm pretty sure i was interviewing at Tulane on 2/16:laugh:

The last interview date was in fact 2/20.

Does anyone have any timeline for turnaround? I know school is closed for Spring Break/Mardi Gras...so should I call them next Tuesday?

I think they meet on Tuesdays so call Thursday (that is what I did). Also, I'd give them an extra week for the holiday. Good luck!

I guess March 5th is judgement day for me then.. i'm all set for med school but Tulane seemed awesome so I'd definitely prefer them. I heard that there are very close to no spots open so I guess i'm pulling for a high spot on the WL and some movement.
 
I felt the need to bump this thread --it's been too quiet the past few days! Did anyone get good news last Thursday?
 
I haven't heard anything but when I talked to Father Don at my interview (2 weeks ago) he said it would be this week (he said March 4th).
 
So I called Ms. Vargas today and they said my file would be reviewed today and I interviewed the 2nd to last date.

For people who have been waitlisted/accepted, should I bother calling back later on today? Or should I hope for a phone call or something in the mail?

I would hold off until Thursday. The adcom meets Tuesday -- not sure what time. Given that Tulane only does status updates Tues and Thurs 10-2, I'm not sure that the decision will be made and entered into the computer system within that window. Of course, this is just my guess and I could very easily be wrong, so go ahead and call if it will put your mind at ease!

I would definitely call sometime instead of waiting for the mail... I don't know why but it took a little while for my letter to arrive, so you may end up waiting awhile if you decide to wait for it.
 
Dr. Beckman told me i'm in acceptance range? Is this just another word for waitlist?
 
Yes. I don't know why they don't just call it a wait-list. I forget exactly how this works, but you are given a numerical ranking. People at one end of the spectrum are accepted, people at the other end are rejected, and the rest are considered to be in the "acceptable range." Importantly, once you're on the wait-list, I don't think people are accepted based on rank; people are periodically reviewed and accepted in a somewhat holistic manner.

Sorry to hear you weren't accepted outright, but lots of schools have substantial wait-list movement. So hopefully you'll have good news after May 15th!
 
hrmm... now I am wondering if I should give Dr. Beckman a call...

Dr. Beckman called me to tell me I was accepted a few days before my letter showed up. Is that not normal?
 
This is just a hunch, but I think Dr. Beckman will call you unless you call first (assuming you've been accepted). When you call for a status check, I imagine that if you've been accepted they make a note that you've been notified via phone -- and then of course you have the snail mail letter.

I was going to say that I don't think this is the norm. From viewing this thread, it seems like the only people who got calls were people accepted right around Christmas. My hunch is that they knew mail would be sporadic over the holidays, so Dr. Beckman called those people accepted at that time.

I think everyone else just gets the letter, unless you're like myself and can't wait and get the awesome news over the phone! =) I still think Ms. Vargas got a kick out of my reaction...it was priceless!!!

It means nothing at all. Relax! They do not issue acceptances in a precisely chronological way. A person who interviewed my same day heard back later that week, and I was in a panic. "Oh my gosh, why haven't they accepted me??? Why can't they just tell me I'm rejected? What does it mean that they accepted him at not me?" Total basket case.

My acceptance came over a month after my interview date. I am not sure why this was the case, and I don't really care. DO NOT worry if you don't hear back when you think you should -- it really does not (necessarily) mean that you won't be accepted. It could just mean they haven't decided yet.
 
Just talked to Ms. Vargas and was told I was in the acceptance range (waitlisted). I really hope there is movement on this list before May, so those of you with acceptances to other schools who are holding on to a Tulane spot, why don't you do what you know is right 👍, heh?

how did you guys find out if you were in the acceptance range? I interviewed on 2.9.09, and I called today, but they said they had no info for me yet... Do they always call for acceptance or does it come by mail/emai? What does Tulane generally do?

For acceptance, I think there is always a phone call -- if you don't call them for a status check, Dr. Beckman calls you. And that is followed up by a snail mail letter. I don't know how they notify you of acceptance range if you don't call them yourself. I imagine it's just the letter in the mail.

Be patient Spike! (it's hard, I know) You're coming up on the 4 week mark, so they should have your decision soon!
 
I think I'm going to revisit Tulane/NOLA to help me make a decision.
To anyone who knows the school/city, what are good places to see, things to do to experience NOLA life?

I just got back from visiting my sisters in NOLA yesterday! Let's see, Uptown, the Audubon Zoo is always fun, and it's definitely worth it to walk through the Park too, and along the levee. Magazine street is packed with cute boutiquey type stores (and I noticed that tons of them are having sales right now, haha). If you want a first class po boy, Parasols in the Garden District makes delicious ones- don't be fooled by the fact that it's a rather sketchy-looking bar. If you want an outstanding brunch, Commander's Palace is wonderful (though quite pricey!). Also, if you haven't seen it, it's probably worth walking around Tulane's undergrad campus- especially their brand new fitness center, which you'll have access to if you go to Tulane med.

Downtown, you should definitely visit Cafe Du Monde and get a cup of coffee and an order of beignets. Despite the fact that it's a totally touristy thing to do, even the locals love it there. Royal Street is packed with really cool art galleries that are worth wandering through if you are at all into art, and of course, Bourbon Street is a must-see. If you want to check out a classic bourbon street bar, try the Old Absinthe House (it's been there for like 200 years!). Galatoire's is a bit further up Bourbon, and is my favorite restaurant in the world. It's very classy and old-fashioned, and both the service and food are phenomenal.

I hope this helps! New Orleans is my favorite city anywhere, so I hope you have fun when you go down to revisit 🙂
 
I want to go to Tulane just so I can walk to Mother's and get a debris sandwich... seriously it changed my life.


Here's hoping for some waitlist moving!
 
so for those of you accepted to Tulane, does everyone know what they're doing for housing?

I'm still researching into buying property versus renting. also considering living in the CBD/warehouse district as opposed to uptown.

is there a better blog/site to talk about these things?

I don't know about the med students but I have a friend in law school at Tulane who lives in the warehouse district and it is really cool. He lives like 3 blocks from the river and maybe 5 blocks from canal st.. really close to harrahs.

It seems pretty ideal for medical school since everything is down that way but he has to drive uptown to campus for class and whatnot. I think that the uptown area is also really cool with all the old houses... very college feel to it whereas the warehouse district is a bit more urban.

i guess it depends on what you're into... I am thinking uptown so I stay away from the casino... if I get in off the waitlist
 
Hey y'all! First post ever, long time lurker. I just wanted to say, I just got an acceptance letter, and not even a phone call! I interviewed at the second to last day too. And it came in a SMALL envelope! So don't give up hope!

i talked to Dr. Beckman and she said that she didn't expect anything to happen until around May 15. That way that have a better idea of where they are and where they need to be.

I love the warehouse district! It seems like it makes so much more sense to live down there by the school. Plus, uptown seems like its a bunch of shared houses and what not which might be better for the following year when you have a good idea of who you'd wanna live with.

I'm thinking to def live in the warehouse district? Any particular places that are popular with med students?

Hey Guys--

I'm a current T2 and have room for two people opening up in my Tulane Med apartment building.

I have 2 rooms for rent in a 2400 sq foot 3 bedroom/2 bathroom luxury apartment just off St. Charles on Lowerline Street. The rooms are large and the apartment is beautiful, bright, and airy. Giant kitchen with lots of light. Washer & Dryer in building (no fee). Tons of off-street parking on a quiet, SAFE (patrolled by Loyola security), tree-lined street Uptown. Very close to Audubon Park and the Undergrad campus/gym (three blocks). Also within walking distance to Maple Street (bars, restaurants, coffee, dry cleaners, etc). 30 second walk to the streetcar. 1/2 a block from the Loyola Law Library (they let us study in there). Free high speed wireless internet, water, and basic cable TV included. Central a/c and heating. Courtyard/Patio in the back. The other roommate in the unit is a current T3 (guy) and the rest of the building's units are filled with Tulane Med students (5 current T2s). $975/month for one room, and $950 for another (it has no closet...but is huge and has room for a giant dresser or some type of closet unit).
