I just got word today from a professor at UNC that because of the economy they are getting more replys than normal for the fall class and about 90% of the class is already filled!

I don't think this sounds too promising. Good luck everybody. Maybe I will go to Dental School instead.

lol who are you? Why don't I believe this at all

The 90% fill reeks of nonsense. I've spoken to the admissions office and they do not work like that. Nice try in the windup.

Yes, nice try. I spoke with an adcom member 2 weeks ago, and I was told the class was approx 50% full.

no seriously, I spoke with a prof who works in an adcoms lab and they were talking the other day about how some of the interviews at the end of feb. have been canceled because the class is basically full. Good luck guys!

You're having a laugh. I'm in the last group of interviews in February and my interview hasn't been canceled. You need to stop wasting people's time.

I'm not sure why I'm encouraging you by continuing to respond, but ...

I don't believe UNC makes too many offers beyond the 160 seats because they have a low decline rate.

And, may I ask what this professor and adcom's names are?

UNC really needs to hurry up with their decisions. I mean they make you wait and wait until April, which is ridiculous. I just want to know if I got accepted or not.

If someone's application is shot down at the committee meeting then tell that particular student not to hope any longer. On the other hand, I think all of the applications should be present to the committee once the interviews are done. I do not see the point of waiting at the "right" time.

I highly doubt that this 90% thing is true. Even if it is, there is nothing any of us can do about it.
For those of you who still have interviews, do your best.
For those of you who have had interviews and are still waiting, good luck! For those of you who have not heard anything, hang in there - I'm sure you'll hear something soon.

As much as I risk sounding like some phony inspirational speaker, I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. I was rejected from everywhere I applied my first year applying. Waitlisted at 1 lower tier school last year and then eventually rejected. Did very well on my MCAT and in post-grad work and was eventually accepted to my top choice (UNC) this year.

That being said and in an effort to be as realistic as possible,I'm sure that more people than usual will accept their offers from UNC (and any other state school for that matter). I have heard that UNC's undergrad is expecting many more college students to accept offer of admission to undergrad because of the economy. However, I would not expect the admissions office to overlook this and overbook interviews. So, don't worry. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone. :xf:

I'm just going to say that the 90% is probably something someone misunderstood. I've heard 33% full, 50% full, and 90% full... for one thing I highly doubt the adcom is accepting or rejecting at that much of a significant rate as compared to other years.

I'm not saying the person who said 90% is wrong, but I really think maybe that professor may have just misunderstood.

With all that said, good luck to everyone tonight! Hopefully we'll hear about some calls.:xf:

Does anyone know what time the committee actually meets? This is the first time I've heard of someone getting called so early in the evening. Anyone else get any good news?

I am incredibly grateful...just got the call at around 6:30 today.

Best wishes to those of you who are waiting. Clearly, there is space left in the class. Keep hope alive!

Congrats also to Ebizzle and all others who got in!

Can you tell us when you interviewed, or approx how long ago it was?

My interview was 1/12.
Thanks everyone. There is space left in the class- don't listen to the lies! Best of luck to everyone!

Hey guys! I usually don't post on here, but I just thought this might give some people hope!
I interviewed at the beginning of October and just heard that I got in tonight! They called around 6:30. So, just because your interview may have been earlier than some other people getting accepted doesn't mean that you won't get in too!

Good luck everybody!

I hate to be nosy- but would you guys be willing to give a brief bio on yourselves? GPA, MCAT, a brief rundown of extracurricular activities, you age, where you are coming from- that sort of stuff. That will really help me, I'm going nuts- like everyone else on here and I'd like to know what my chances look like based on my stats

Well, I am a non-traditional applicant who decided to apply to medical school after starting my MPH at UNC.

As far as GPA is concerned....

Grad 3.9
Undergrad OA - 3.7
BCPM - 3.75

I really don't think there is a formula for getting in, as I am not the typical "pre-med." My research and service are primarily related to public health disparities work in the U.S. and abroad. As trite as it sounds, I think conveying your passion for pursuing a career in medicine is worth a whole lot.

Also FYI, I interviewed 2 weeks ago.

Hope this helps...

Again, best wishes to those of you who are waiting.

2 weeks ago? Wow, congrats! You must have really impressed. That is the soonest I have heard of someone getting word after the interview.

Does anyone know by what time UNC has usually finished making offers (other than pulling people from the waitlist)?

When do people find out if they are waitlisted?

So I had to work last night. During that time I received a call at 7:19 from an unknown number. However, there was no message. Is it a possibility?
I have been tellin myself that if it was UNC they would have left a message. Anyone else with this experience?

Give them a call to check your status. If you were accepted, then I'm sure they'd tell you.

just called Eric. 65% has been filled. i'm slowly losing hope. :/

When I was waitlisted two years ago they notified me in the middle of April, but from what I hear if you haven't heard a Yes by mid March you are either waitlisted or rejected.

Don't lose hope. If that number is accurate, that still means there are approx 60 seats left. That's a good number.

hm. ever see "he's just not that into you?"

probs getting called post-march after waiting a million and half weeks is the exception, not the rule.

I wasn't talking about the situation where it's April or later. I was talking to the person who said they are losing hope now. And with estimates of 60 or more seats still available, I think it's too early for anyone to start losing hope.

since it seems like they will give out most of their acceptances by the end of February, there is still around 50-60 spots open, and they meet every 2 weeks; is it safe to assume that the next committee meeting on Feb. 23 (or the one after on March 9th) they will be giving out a large amount of acceptances??

Fiko,

Probably, but I have heard that in the past, they begin meeting every week (instead of every other). Also, it could be well into March before they give out 60+ more acceptances. I know that people have interviews through the end of February. They won't interview if they are out of spots, so there is still a significant amount of time left (I would assume).

Hey guys,

How long did your interviews last on average at UNC? I am just curious. Were they 30 minutes long or what?

My non-adcom interview was about 45 mins. My adcom interview was about 20 mins or so.

It's strange how much the interview times vary. My interviews were both 1 hour each.

One of mine was around 45 minutes the other was well over an hour. Everyone was done eating by the time I got back from my second one.

how do you determine which interviewer was the adcom member?
anyone know if they started meeting weekly yet?

I don't know if there is a way to know who your Adcom member is. I was told by a friend who is an M1 at UNC that one of the people I interviewed with was their Adcom member last year. I'm hopeful.

I was told by the admissions office when I scheduled my interview. I think that the MD is usually the adcom and the PhD is usually the non-adcom.

Called today? People are not usually called on Friday.

Both of my interviewers are MDs. My adcom member told me he was my adcom member. Both of the people who interviewed me though were on the adcom, but of course only one served as my adcom member. And the person who interviewed with my adcom member after me, he served as their non-adcom interviewer.

friday the 13th rejection heh

(OOS applicant)

I assume they notified you via email. When did you interview? Did you feel good about your interviews?

I interviewed in November. It was 9 weeks later that I found out about the acceptance. Interestingly, I did not get a phone call from UNC about my acceptance. I thought everyone got a phone call if they were accepted, but I was wrong. In fact, I received an envelope from the admissions office in the mail and immediately threw it down because I assumed it was a waitlist/rejection because they had never called me. I opened it hours later after I calmed down and sure enough it was an acceptance letter.

I have also heard that 60% of the class is filled.

For those of you who want my stats:
-36Q MCAT
-3.61 overall
-3.52 science
-3.73 AO

If you've been accepted you should join the facebook group: UNC School of Medicine Class of 2013.

Congrats! I have heard of people not getting called. I suppose that sometimes maybe your adcom rep forgets or is not able to call you for some reason. That would freak me out too.

You definitely going to UNC?

friday the 13th rejection heh

(OOS applicant)

Friday the 13th rejection to me as well. OOS applicant, waiting on the interview, not going to get one 🙁

Best to all

Well I am waiting to hear from Michigan. Other than that I've withdrawn my application from most other places. Even though I'm waiting on Michigan, I'm still 95% set on UNC because I am an in-state student and the cost is cheaper. But if I get accepted to Michigan I will deliberate for a little and come to a conclusion

Did you say you were accepted to UNC (if not when did you interview), and are you in-state?
