Waiting for everyone to hear back from other schools and withdraw if they choose another institution over BU? That's my guess. Sneaky, but smart.

maybe they are also sorting out the rejection letters as well as the waitlists and then finally giving the acceptance calls.

I don't know. BU has a large committee but they also have a lot more applicants to sort through even if they've met. I'm sure they still have a lot of work to do in terms of sending out letters and putting together packets because even if they call to inform you they will still have to get together the proper paper packets with the financial aid info and stuff like that and worry about sorting through which are waitlisted vs. accepted vs. rejected.

I'm sure all that takes time.

Nah I don't think so since a lot of people will wait til April or may before doing such. I'm sure people would wait for a decision before they did that.

You should be glad they are doing this carefully. In 2008, I got a waitlist letter from Georgetown addressed to someone else!!

Had to find him on facebook and sort it out.

I agree. Reminds me of the time someone got accepted into a SMP program only to find out that was accidental. the school took them the second time around. But yeah that's weird. I do agree that they should do things more carefully and that all takes time.
 
Hmm that's true... I didn't think about the time to sort out WL/rejection letters and ensuring there are no mix-ups. And like Gujudoc said people won't necessarily withdraw in March, more likely in April after financial aid letters come out etc.

Yeah it was at my previous institution. It was really bad. They took him the following year and the following year he got in another program too but still chose to stay at that school.
 
i dunno, i think that makes sense. harvard gets out march 15 so i'm sure that will change some people's minds. not a lot, and yes, fin aid is important too.

either way, i can't wait to hear from them and i really hope it's good news.
 
Any accepted people fill out their MyFAPP form yet for the BU financial aid office? What did you do with that "describe your interest in primary care" essay? After this whole application season, the financial aid office now wants an essay also? :diebanana:

uuh come on dude, by now you've got to know that there are donors and scholarships out there giving money to people interested in primary care

Honestly, I didn't really give it much effort. For one thing, I'm really not sure what specialty I want to go into, and while I haven't ruled out Primary Care, it's also not on my short list of possibilities. So I pretty much just wrote that in the space on the application. I really doubt there are many scholarships offered for first-years planning to go into Primary Care anyway. I think one of the main reasons they even ask this on the financial aid application is because of federally-subsidized, low-interest Primary Care Loans (http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/dsa/pcl.htm). Though there IS a requirement to complete a residency in Primary Care, and also to practice in Primary Care for the duration of the loan. So unless you're 100% sure that you're going into PC, there's really no need to put much effort into this section of the application, IMHO.
 
Why can't BU just be like every other school and give us their final decision nowwwww???? This is KILLING me.. it's so hard to see all my friends get acceptances from Penn, Harvard, Yale.. and I STILL HAVE 2 WEEKS TO WAIT! 😡
 
Just jumping in on all the speculation of why it takes so long since the meeting for decisions to be sent out. And yes, they have been made. The lag is due to a personal screening by the Dean of Admissions of each accepted applicant.

As mentioned previously, there are several small subcommitees that review the MD application pool. Once they have reviewed the applications they are responsible for, all applicants selected for admission are forwarded to the Dean, who then personally reviews every single file before giving the final approval. This takes time.

On a different note, MD/PhD is reviewed by a different committee (some common members), and PhD is yet another committee. I'm not completely sure on this, but quite certain that only some of the MD/PhD and PhD decisions have been made. Note that at least the PhD interviews are still ongoing although MD/PhD is complete.

Anyway, hope that helps [at least in part] why there is such a long lag... good luck to everyone! 🙂

Just curious, if the Dean of Admissions personally screens and makes a final approval for each applicant, does he sometimes reverse decisions? Like, accept --> WL or reject (that would suck, although I guess you'd never know) or the reverse direction? I guess we'd never know, since everything is confidential.
 
Does anyone know how many people got accepted in December and how many more they will be accepting in March?

Yeah, you'd never know. But once you have been selected by the subcommittee, lets face it, the Dean has little reason to overturn it unless something is really out of place. So in general, once you have the green light from the subcommittee, I would venture a guess that you are about 95% locked... but hey, that is just me throwing out a number haha 🙄

ahh. today marks the official two weeks from when we should find out at the latest (because it'll be the last day of march in 2 weeks) ahh! :luck:

One-third of the class was accepted in January. I don't have a specific number, but look out for a lot more acceptances to be going out in two weeks.

That definitely makes a lot of us still waiting feel much better! 🙂 :xf:I'm trying to do whatever I can to make the next 2 weeks go by fast.

Do you think they give deferred applicants from the first wave of acceptances the same consideration as those interviewed after?
 
I was under the impression that everyone is completely re-reviewed for the second wave. The deferred applicants were still strong (at least numerically), hence they were given an early interview.
 
Thanks! That definitely makes sense. I assumed that to be the case, but I just wanted to see if someone else thought that as well.

Did anyone else have Dr. Betances as an interviewer?
 
I got kind of an odd vibe from my interviewer. She seemed a bit depressed and unenthusiastic. She mainly went on a rant about losing her lab... I don't think that bodes very well.

Yea definitely not! A little foreshadowing perhaps? 🙁 What was her position? Physician, faculty, etc?

Losing her lab??? Sounds weird. Anyhow, there are always people who are depressed in the profession of medicine. I wouldn't say that defines everyone. I find most of the kids at BU seem to be ok and fine. Not negative about medical school. Most of the professors I know seem to be happy and fine.
 
Don't worry too much about your interviewer. Sometimes "too nice" of an interviewer can be worse, since they are known to give positive reviews to everyone. Impressing a intense or harsh interviewer can mean more to the adcom.

I had a pretty awkward couple of seconds with my interviewer as I was leaving their office. It involved me opening the wrong exit door that sounded an alarm by accident, knocking over things on a coffee table as he showed me the correct way out, then accidently walking into my backside as I bent down to pick up the things I knocked over, subsequently dropping my folder and strewing my papers all over the floor and finally having someone come out of their office to see "whats the commotion". So the end of my interview went from "I wish we had met sooner" (since I work at BMC)...to "Wow you are a mess arent you?" 😛 I'm just hoping it came of as endearing!

:laugh: thats too funny, i hope your interviewer doesn't think you're a mess just nervous loll i could totally see myself go through all that!!
 
Does anyone (or anyone from the first cycle) know which faculty call their interviewees to let them know of their acceptances (and which professors don't)?

If you go back several pages to when january acceptances came out, you can get a general idea. My interviewer did not call.
