did you file for an extension? 'cause the date's coming up really soon...
and yeah, i think the boston app is required for institutional aid.

That's right, but remember (just in case anyone is confused about this): The CSS and the MyFapp have nothing to do with whether or not you qualify for Federal or private lending. This is institutional aid only.

This CSS Profile is a monster. 😡

ok. so fafsa is federal/private lending? and css/myfapp is for BU funding (institutional)? so hypothetically, if i were not to complete myfapp (havent filed taxes, and parents usually file it later in the yr every yr they told me), then i would only qualify for federal/private lending? and i would see that from BU at some point?

fact. a terrible beast.

It is, in a roundabout way, on the Student Financial Services page welcoming the Class of 2014, here.

If you scroll down part of the way, you'll see the following:
Student Financial Services said:
If you are only applying for Federal loans, please complete the FAFSA and 2010-2011 William D. Ford Direct Loan Direct Loan Request Form.

My dealings with the SFS have been very pleasant and informative. They've explained it to me thus:

  • FAFSA/Direct Loan Request for Federal funding
  • FAFSA/CSS/MyFapp for institutional funding
  • FAFSA/good credit for private credit-based funding
fact. a terrible beast.

Yeah, I'm not too happy about it, either.

and I thought the secondaries were repetitive, the FA app def takes the crown on that one. even worse, some schools don't use css and you have to redo it all again for another site,

anyone else just twiddling their thumbs, waiting for an award letter? come on, BU. i'm impatient.

So if I'm applying for federal loans and institutional aid, anyone know if I have to fill out the 2010-2011 William D. Ford Direct Loan Direct Loan Request Form? The website doesn't really say...

i didn't fill it out (i don't think 😕) and i applied for both. my application is "complete," so i assume that form isn't needed.

Yeah, I just want them to hand me my $300k in loans and be done with it. :meanie:

I talked with the OSFS on Monday. They said that it usually takes about two weeks for them to process and determine aid packages for recently completed applications.

For what its worth, based on how nit picky those applications were and how long we had to wait for adcom decisions, I don't think they are in any rush to get us aid packages prior to that May 6ish deadline.

Also keep in mind that if you go to BU you will have access to the Harvard and Tufts medical libraries and also you will be able to do research in one of those other 2 schools if you want to do it there instead of BU. I know someone who did summer research at Harvard after first year of med school. Of course not sure how that works if you want to do MD/PhD i.e. like in that case if you'd have to do the research at BU. But just saying.

I am really interested in surgical or eye related research. I was hoping to do some at Mass Eye and Ear, how easy is this to accomplish? Where would I begin to look to apply? Also, do students ever do research during the school year? If so, how much time do they commit? Feel free to PM me.

I am 99.9% sure I will attend BU in the fall.

Hmmm... my application has been complete since 03/11 and still no word.

Hey Guys,

I'm a first year here at BU, love this place, my classmates, and Boston.

With regards to research, some people do research during the year, but they are usually people who aren't taking a full class load for one reason or another (i.e. they did GMS or took some of the classes as a BU undergrad). I took all of the classes and did a lot of research this year (probably averaged 15+ hours/week), so I think that it is feasible if you really enjoy research and don't mind sacrificing some of your free time.

If you want to do research at MEEI or anywhere else for that matter, just get in touch with the faculty you are interested in working with via email and be persistent.

Is anyone bringing parents to the second look day? I know it says we can bring guests, and my mom is interested in coming, but I wasn't sure if it would be strange to have parents there/if she would feel out of place.

I'm bringing my parents as well

...and for those who care, BU moved up one spot in the US News rankings to 34...

ewwww 500 NON-refundable deposit on may15th
Yeah BU, nice job ignoring AAMC guidelines/recommendations.

#7. Each school's acceptance deposit not exceed $100 and (except for EDP applicants) be refundable until May 15, April 30 for MD-PhD applicants. If the applicant enrolls at the school, the school is encouraged to credit the deposit toward tuition.

Well, the email says that the deposit is non-refundable after May 15th, so I assume it is refundable before then. And since you can only hold onto one acceptance by then, it shouldn't be a huge deal; you either pay the deposit or withdraw your acceptance. And it is credited towards tuition. So really the only people who lose out are those who change their minds after the 15th b/c of waitlists or something. But yea, in the MSAR it looks like almost every other school has a $100 deposit.

But why $500? That's way too high. It deters students on the fence from sending in a deposit at all.

This is one of the few things i dsilike about BU, they feel like a money making machine throughout this application process. I mean there's really no reason why they couldn't just charge 100 dollar deposite like every other school. At most they would lose a couple thousands when a couple students leave for a waitlist, and not take 400 extra dollars from already poor students.

Similar thing almost happened to me last year, but the place my wife and I booked gave away our date and we changed it to earlier.

There isn't really much in the way of class for the first week, though there are some orientation things and meet and greet type things. So you won't have to worry about a bunch of work on top of taking care of last minute things for the wedding. Also congrats on getting married!👍

Yeah, for some reason I thought school would start on the 16th, not the 9th. So my fiancee & I planned our wedding for the 14th. Gonna be an interesting week.

congrats on the wedding thats gonna be some crazy exciting week for you 🙂

Congrats on the marriage. Also, most med schools have week 1 as orientation. So I'm sure you'll be ok.

adding my congrats-- that's a banner week for you! marriage + starting med school, wow!

Anyone have Dr. Witzburg's email here, I couldn't seem to find it in a search. Pm me if you want. thanks.

As in, I am better off sending updates to the admissions office than him directly? I have a sense that this varies from school to school.

No need for that email anymore, redsquareblack scared me into just uploading it on the status webpage.

-This cycle may kill me

Sorry, didn't mean to be so flip. I haven't dealt with Dr. Witzburg a great deal, so my analysis may be way off. I'm just thinking, though, that when you search for the man's email address, and the best you can come up with is [email protected], there's probably a reason for it!

Your mileage may vary.

Yea i was being a little sarcastic. That is exactly my reason though, even his emails come from that address.

Accepted today at Columbia...withdrawing from BU...hopefully someone gets my spot! Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Well I think the short end of the stick is that for people who aren't like you and me who were or are GMS students you will not get to make appointments for advice directly from the admissions office at BU if you are wanting the email for application advice for next year. Don't know why the person who you were responding to wanted it, but that's what I get. We meaning me and redsquareblack could probably find it because we have the direct access to the directory via our bu accounts. But that doesn't mean we should be giving it out if the reasons are for applications because this is a school that doesn't deal that directly head on due to 10,000 people applying. I assume that is the reason they don't give the email directly unlike at smaller schools.

Withdrew! 99.9% sure I'm attending Sinai as of now (assuming no waitlists move). BU was too expensive in comparison to justify my attending there over Sinai.

Was gonna wait until May, but I figured why not? Hope my spot goes to a SDNer.

Good luck y'all.

you got your package? my app was complete a while ago; not sure what's taking so long...

but i'm still 99% sure i'm going to sinai too 😀😀

Well no. I got my package at other schools (not BU), which has pretty much convinced me I will be getting all loans and no grants no matter where I attend. Royally sucks, because my parents have only agreed to contribute about 10k/year to my tuition/other expenses. So high debt load for mdeast.

Sinai ends up being way cheaper than other schools for me...just because the tuition is lower and the housing is cheaper than anyplace else. I'm still considering my waitlist schools, because a few of them are at least comparable in price to Sinai. Based off the info they gave us, plus the lack of subsidized housing, I just knew Boston and BU were going to be significantly higher that there could no way that my package would end up being less expensive...which would have been the only reason I would have chosen BU over Sinai.

To the curious:

Spoke with the fin aid office. For those of you that got the applications in by the deadline (last friday) you will get a letter before May 15 (possibly May 7th). The Fin Aid office is working on everyones package right now so dont be concerned if you have not recieved it yet. They will be sending them soon. Best of luck everyone.

Dont know about you but I am very excited about BU. The potential in this city and at the Univeristy is endless. 😍

Cheers.

and if we didn't, will we be able to see out federal aid before May 15th? IIRC, the CSS and Myfapp were only for institutional aid.

For those who aren't aware, the deadline is actually April 16 or 45 days from day of acceptance, whichever is later. Found that on the finaid site and confirmed on the phone. So don't stress about it if you submitted after 4/16.

Also, they are very forgiving with first years, i.e. if you're late you'll be on the bottom of the pile and it will take longer and you're less likely to get institutional aid, but its not like your SOL. I couldn't get my stuff in by the deadline last year because my parents hadn't completed their tax info, but they worked with me once I had all my stuff in.

may i ask when you submitted all of your stuff by? my parents haven't done their tax stuff either. the usually do it every year in october and this is causing a huge headache
