As an out of state student, I can apply for in state tuition if I live off campus for one year. And I have no idea if there are still spaces in the dorms.

You can apply for in state residency even if you're living in the dorms.

EDIT: Someone else said you can't. I'd contact someone involved in the process for gaining state residency to determine whether you can or can't.

Oh really? I looked at the form briefly, and it said residence halls were normally not considered a permanent home address. What hoops do you have to jump through to have them consider your dorm room a permanent home address?

Does anyone know the time line on when we will find out:

1. Who our roommates are (if you have a double in the dorms)

2. Confirmations about loans and the final steps for getting the $ (I already did the entrance counseling and sent my signed paperwork in)

I'm looking at the form and it does not say you can't declare your dorm a permanent address. Maybe someone with more experience in the matter (like a former out of stater). I think you just need to make sure you can get everything they ask for on the form. I'm not sure they can say what can be considered a permanent address and what can't be.

I think they want evidence of a 1 year lease. That would mean that you would need to live in the dorms for a year continuously including summers. Maybe you can call the housing office to check.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what is happening in terms of movement on the alternate list. It appears in past years the list has moved more so than this year......has anyone heard anything at all?

Nope, haven't heard anything. Last year there was some movement around July 1. Also, two years ago there was massive movement around the end of July (though that didn't happen last year). So those are two time points we should look forward to.

By the way, I noticed that there are several people who have been sitting on the alternate list since Jan/Feb even though loads of applicants who were waitlisted later have already received acceptances. I talked with the admission office and they informed me that the alternate list is NOT ranked. Can anyone clarify how an unranked waitlist works? Is it handled so as to maintain balance within the class (e.g. female drops acceptance, female is accepted from waitlist; or out-of-state applicant " " ", out-of-state applicant " " "). This sort of makes sense, right? I mean, lots of schools try to maintain (approx.) equal gender ratios as well as reasonable ethnic diversity. Thoughts?

thats what i assume as well. i spoke yesterday with s/o there, and she told me that once s/o drops out, they try to look into the alternate list and see who would "add to the class" - so i assume you are right... in terms of time- she told me that they have accepted ppl even after classes started - so dont give up hope... :xf:

did the office have any other useful information regarding the atlernate list? trying not to give up hope.

its kind of cruel that on the status checklist it has slots for "acceptance form, white coat form and $100 deposit"

(hell) Yeah it is cruel.

(hell) Yeah it is cruel.

Not to mention that I think they're the only school in the universe that sends a huge envelope that looks like an acceptance for the alternate list. Their alternate list packet was thicker than most of my acceptances. I already knew they were going to do this so I wasn't too excited, but I know someone out there must have thought it was an acceptance. Very cruel.

at this point, does everybody on the alternate list have the following item on the checklist?

"$100 Acceptance Deposit due between May 1-13 (Please disregard if you are on the Alternate List)"

Does everyone still have the May 1-13 part? It seems that they realized their mistake and now took it away.

this makes me want to cryyyY!!!!!

Looking back at older threads it seems that people are calling the office of admissions alot and checking their status. Is there anyone specific to ask for? the couple times I have called to ask random questions it seems as if I am talking to a secretary who doesn't have that much specific information regarding my application.

Yeah they changed it to '$100 Acceptance Deposit'

Can all yallz remember to post if you get accepted off of the alt list?

NEGATORY. You will not be considered in-state the following year if you don't live off-campus for at least 1 year with a signed lease. Living in the dorms do not count.

C'mon Downstate more movement!

according to last years thread (yea i read it)...july 1st is a day for a lot of action...lots of praying!!

^It wouldn't hurt your chances, that's for sure.

Was a second interest email sent to you guys in mid-June? I think this has happened in previous cycles, but I didn't notice any comments about it this year.

I got one interest email in May prior to being placed on the alternate list. nothing since then.

Crap. That probably means they don't need as many people from the alternate list this year.

I think last year they just sent the interest email out later.

Does the White Coat tend to run very big? I don't want to order a Medium and end up with something that looks like an XL.

has anyone start studying from the biochemistry review packet they sent us?

Depends if you had taken biochem during undergrad or not. I didn't and am glad I looked the packet over once. You don't have to make notes on the packet - there'll be plenty of chances for you to do so once mid-Aug rolls around.

Vulcan already took biochem. so.....

I haven't taken Biochem so I will definitely look it over very soon.

well soooooorrryyyyyy 😛

Its worth a look over i guess but honestly i was very happy with how well they covered it in GI block

Not much action on the thread lately - any acceptances off the alternate list? app withdrawls?

Nope.

Did anyone notice that, at the moment, there are only 87 people in the 2014 Downstate Facebook group while the 2013 group has 187 members? I find it hard to believe that more than half the class would forego the opportunity to join the group before school starts. This may suggest that a large number of acceptees really haven't made their final decisions. If my theory is correct, there's gonna be quite a bit of movement in the upcoming weeks.

The group that you are referring to is actually run by the students. There is another group, which is run by the administrators at Downstate, which has quite a large number of students. The last time that I checked, there were 169 students in that group.

hahahaha i enjoyed your theory for about 45 seconds. it was a nice time. hopefully there will still be movement in the next few weeks. an email I got said i can hear at any time until August 16th, so there's still time.

Which email are you referring to? Have you gotten an email recently? I think it is odd that not even one person on student doctor has gotten accepted since the beginning of June. But I'm still hoping to be surprised.

No I had emailed the admissions office asking a question and they responded saying that. Also, I called the office today to confirm a fax that I sent the office and the woman I spoke to said movement is extremely slow and to "hang in there."

I agree, I am surprised.

Hey All,

I am an incoming freshman and am considering commuting to Downstate. I live in East Midwood which is ~3.0 miles away. I feel like it is simply not worth it to pay for on or off campus housing when I live only 15 minutes away. Does anyone think commuting from around 3 miles away is a bad idea.

Thanks,
Hal

My brother drove from Astoria for three years. He preferred it to the dorms.

i'm currently signed up for the dorms but I was wondering if there's a forum for other medical students who might need a 3rd or 4th roommate. i don't mind the idea of living in the dorms. its just this way I might be able to get in-state tuition 1 year earlier (OOS from Cali) and possibly get my own room (i'm extremely light-sleeper).

i got into downstate off the waitlist last friday. they told me i had a week to decide so i'm going to call them with my answer tomorrow... or well.. later today i guess. if i didn't screw up my chance already that is, since they called me thursday afternoon and i couldn't pick up at the time.

sadly enough, i still haven't made my decision and probably will be sleeping on it. deciding between upstate and downstate if ppl are curious.

both are great schools, but I would ask myself where I felt more at home and more comfortable. Either schools offer ample opportunity to become a competent physician, and it is up to you to determine what environment you would thrive more in. Good luck!
