I wonder if sending an my AMCAS in June will hurt my chances at Wayne for this cycle? We have no reason to believe that it will, but who knows? I'm planning on having my application sent into AMCAS no later than the second week of June; Wayne probably won't get it until July.

I just called them. They said OOS and Canadian are NOT separate. They are WL together. Also, it seems 7 out of the 20 that were sent an email yesterday were OOS.

This is what I was trying to tell people a few days ago... itll probably be broken down ~ 60%:40% ISS:OSS... At least that's what statistics show from last year. So keep faith OSSers. Yes, you have a smaller chance, but still a SOLID chance. I'd imagine your chance of getting pulled at Wayne are better than most other schools, probably even your own state school!

In total this week, there were probably 11 or 12 OSSers pulled. I doubt more than half will take it. A few slots will open up for you guys.

I've been tutoring for the past several months as a job, which has been awesome. But I need to find a medically-related job if I don't get in. Any ideas?

I was thinking of this as well and I really don't think that it could hurt you. If anything I think it shows how much you want to go to medical school by trying to get ahead of the game again. However, if anyone has heard otherwise, please do tell.

When is the first day to submit applications on AMCAS? I was also thinking of submitting ASAP and getting things done really early since it's basically all filled out already anyway, besides a few changes I need to make.

Thanks everyone, sorry I said earlier there are two lists, 2 of my friends who recently accepted told me, sorry again if I cause any problem, lol I think that they just wanted to make me nervous since they both accepted in like 6 schools and consider wayne as safety school, 😳

alright team, more time-vampiring inaccurate speculation...

The short of it: I think Wayne does a decent job of managing the number of people on their waitlist. If you make it through the summer, you should feel good about your application as you weren't far from getting in.

I'll give the IS argument because I'm instate.

The long version:

First lets look at some statistics:

Total admissions data: 3809 applied, 1007 interviewed, 624 were accepted, 290 enrolled
In-state admissions data: 1400 applied, 558 interviewed, 413 were accepted, 222 enrolled
Out-of-state admissions data: 2409 applied, 449 interviewed, 211 were accepted, 68 enrolled

I'm going to base all my speculation on last years stats.

So last years stats show us that 145 IS students were not accepted. So far, we have already had 100 students rejected. Roughly 55% of interviewers were IS. So we can (probably inaccurately) assume that 55% of those rejected were IS. So we'll say that 55/100 students rejected were IS, leaving 90 IS students not accepted.

I've already posted how I have reason to believe there will be another batch of rejections in the next 2-3 weeks. Last year, it happened around June 4th. Also, Wayne gives about 2 weeks for offers to be accepted/declined. Two weeks from now, when all the of the students have given Wayne State an answer, the ADCOM will have better insight regarding what next years class will look like. They can then cut a number of students. Last year they had around 150 left on the waitlist in the beginning of June. There seems to be quite a bit of movement this year, so if 150 is what they are after, I don't know if they'll have to cut as many students this year. But I'm going to treat it like last year anyways. It was reported (I think) that 2 to 3 dozen students got the axe in Round 2 of rejections. Lets assume that means 30 students got rejected. Lets apply our 55% rule, and we find that another 16 IS students were rejected, leaving 74 IS not accepted.

So we have 74 IS students who, while never accepted, were also not rejected. There also has to be a group of students who withdrew before hearing from Wayne, and at a school like Wayne, I'm sure this happens a decent amount. I'd imagine there ends up being like 30-40 IS students who have to ride this thing out and never get accepted. I guess the moral of the story is: don't be discouraged. There is always next year. If you are one of the last few dozen that didn't manage to get in, make some improvements and get reapply. I know it sounds dreadful, we all want to get in NOW. But keep your head up. We've made it a long ways. They've kept you around this long for a reason.

Ilvcurst- you mentioned not applying again. What do you have to lose? Its only one more year, which really is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

where did you hear that there will be another round of rejections?

where did you hear that there will be another round of rejections?

No one told me, but there was last year, so I'm assuming there will be one this year. They also had a round of rejections last year around when we did this year, so I'm guessing they have some kind of plan in mind.

I think it they don't do an additional round of rejections this year its because the WL has been moving a lot more, but with over 200 students on it, I don't see how they can't make another cut at some point.

I think Wayne's ultimate goal is to have about 150 students on the waitlist at the beginning of June. I'm sure someone can call to find out how many we are at right now. I'd bet its probably around 180

I hope they reject me rather than giving me false hope, at least I dont check my email Evey 4 hours, lol

Here is what shows up on the log-in page of the AMCAS: We are currently entering transcripts into the application that were received on 05.18.10. Submission of the 2011 AMCAS application will begin on or about June 1, 2010.

My goal is to have it fully submitted by June 3rd. I mean, a week or two or even three doesn't really matter. But last year I waited until September 2nd to send all of my stuff into AMCAS. I want to give myself a 3-month head start this time around. Why, you ask? Oh, BECAUSE THE WAITING AND MISERY WASN'T GRUESOME ENOUGH THIS PAST YEAR SO I WANTED TO SUBJUGATE MYSELF TO MORE OF IT! :annoyed:

Can you just send the application without choosing any school, I want they verify my application then decide where to apply ?

I really don't want to waste another year of my life. If I thought I could get in then I would re-apply but honestly I don't think I will without retaking the MCAT or boosting my GPA.

So retaking the MCAT is out because I don't want to take it again, it was too grueling.

I don't have the money to go do a SMP and once again even if i do one I don't know if I'll get in.

I'm also 25 and just want to move on with my life. After spending the last 8 years being pre-med I'm kind of burnt out.

If it wasn't meant to be then it wasn't meant to be. If others have the strength and courage to go on then good for them. I'm just so tired of this process that's all.

I know you can ADD schools after submitting your application. However, I'm not sure if they require you to choose at least one school or not before submitting.

I feel your pain. I'm 24. Kinda scary to think that we've been pre-med for that long.

This is correct. By the way guys...please just hang in there. I understand how terrible this waiting process is. I never thought in a million years that I would get pulled from the wl. I was deathly terrified that I was the last person on it. Your day will be here soon. After all, it is only may...we have the rest of the summer. Things will work out...they always do.

Says the guy who got pulled off of a waitlist🙂

So guys, what percentage of the total offers do you think have been made thus far, since May 15th?

I feel like at the beginning of Fall last year, my confidence was a brightly-lit torch. Now, it's a dimming match. But what matters is that it remains illuminated. I still have hope. We must all have hope!

Waxing optimism aside, if my score were low enough to give me the rejection seanshah is anticipating, it would be bittersweet. I could move on and begin to plan for reapplication, though it would be sad. But I'll just make sure that the sadness is short-lived and keep working for the future! (I guess this is where my waxing optimism ends, technically.)

Just wanted to let you all know that I just got accepted off another school's waitlist that I would almost for sure accept over Wayne state. I am going to remain on the waitlist though, because I still need to figure out my financials for the other school (OOS) because I can save a lot of money by going to Wayne instead, if I get in.

But, to be honest, I will most likely be giving up my spot if I do end up ever getting in.

Good luck to you all!

Congrats on the Cinci acceptance. I'm not just saying this because I want you to withdraw (Ok, maybe a little) but Cincinnati is a pretty fun city. I was there a few weeks ago. The weather is nice, not too hot and not too cold. The night life is probably better than any other within 4 hour drive of Detroit(except for Chicago). But none of this will matter because you won't be able to experience any of it.

Cinci is a great school with great clinical experience. But the medical field is very... dynamic today. I'm not sure if it will always be as lucrative as it once was. I think its a good idea to be more conscientious of the financial aspect of it. You cannot beat 25K a year. If you had no real reason to move to Cinci, I would stay here in Detroit. But if you don't want to practice in Detroit as a physician, get the F out while you can.

There is no way for us to know. But looking at last years thread, there seemed to be a decent amount of movement even in July. We know they offered 34 spots this time around, and 54 total. I'd have to saw we are close to 60% done. But don't fret. We already know for a fact that a few will reject the offers, as they've stated on the forum. And as time goes on, the better schools will pull a few Wayne Staters off the waitlist.

And I would be very surprised if they didn't reject several more students before July. There are going to be at least 100 of us still on the list, they know they won't need all of us.

So in other words, if we, instaters, survive the next batch of rejection, we have a good chance of getting that offer... That sounds optimistic enough, and I want to ride on that hope all summer long, even though I dont think I can handle another month of this stress

I remember when I was looking into the program (a while ago though), they used to have a June 1st deadline so hurry up and get it in. One thing to note: this is a 1.5 year program, correct? So you won't be doing yourself any favors for the class of 2015.

well the main issue isn't about completing the program, because you really don't need to. all you need is the grades from 20 credits-worth (at 3.7+), unfortunately by the time the grades are in you have to apply for 2016 anyway, as you said.

He's not Canadian. Also I seriously doubt they would separate Canadian students from OOS students. MFC is going to call tomorrow and check so we should know soon enough.

I'm a she actually...I am not a Canadian, I'm from the Midwest (WI). I should have my spot released by Monday. Good luck everyone, I really hope it goes to a fellow SDNer.

That's great. Congrats!!! 😀

I am applying this summer.

Does anyone know if going to a top/ivy school increases the likelihood of getting interviewed/accepted? A friend who attends WSUSOM told me that wayne interviews the vast majority of applicants from top/ivy schools. He told me that they do this because they try to recruit students from top/ivy institutions. Not sure how true this is...

its probably not true. as with all schools they have general MCAT and GPA guidelines they like to follow (among other things). going to an ivy won't guarantee you an interview anywhere

also, why do you keep referring to it as "top/ivy". if it is an ivy school,it is redundant to say its a top school. and if its a top school thats not an ivy, then there is no point in mentioning ivy. what are we hiding.

I definitely can relate with you. Right now, I'm at the point where I don't think I'm going to apply to MD schools next year. I feel like the application I sent out was my best...and though there could be minor improvements made, which would probably include retaking the MCAT for a couple extra points (which I don't even know that I could do better), and even then I won't be a shoe in. I am still kind of young (22) but I don't want to waste my time, money, youth, and sanity pursuing something that isn't right for me. I'd really like to get on with my life, and if that is unreasonable, then this career isn't for me. I don't know how students can reapply year after year...I'm already sprouting gray hairs, lol. With that being said, I'm still hoping and praying with every fiber in my body that I get in this round so that I CAN get on with my life!

My guess is that at least 60 people have been taken off the waitlist after the last admittance cycle ended on May 5th. This is quite a bit of waitlist movement...so I would guess (for whatever it's worth) that more students are going to be accepted of the waitlist then last year.

Ya everyone is pretty different in this process. I don't like it when people can't relate and just say will if you want to be a doctor that bad then reapply and retake your MCATs. There are so many other things going on in life, everyone's life that can affect the way you feel about reapplying.

I really hope I get of one of the two wait lists that I'm on. This whole process is very unfair and unforgiving to me. You work you ass off for years and years just to have a bunch of people who don't really know you that well pass judgement on you. They could get you completely wrong! That seems really bias and unpredictable to me, it's I do believe a lot of luck when it comes to getting in!

The kicker of it all is...we work our asses off, spend the little money that we DO have to try to get into medical school in hopes of working our asses off even more and going into extreme debt at the same time. Kudos to anyone who has the passion to be relentless through this process, but the 5 years I have spent is enough for me. Now that I'm on a role with all of this whining, idk about anyone else, but do you have friends that say "Of course you're going to get in you're really smart", or "Yea I understand what you are going though", who actually cannot relate at all and are going into completely different fields? Or the kicker is when they think you are exaggerating everything, or when they compare the GRE to the MCAT. That's very frustrating to me. Phewww glad I could get that off my chest.

Regarless though, of whether I get in or not, I don't consider it a complete loss. I think this whole process really tests a person, and brings out parts of your character that you hadn't had to use before. I know I have learned a lot from this whole process, which can only help in future endeavors if need be.

Assume that these top/ivy students have average stats....

so how many years have you been a premed?
This process really sucks....and I really hate people who go like "yeah you are smart you will get in or you have good grades you will get in" They don't know anything about the process and the challenges. sigh...
but hay, I guess it's time to reapply now..and start the nightmare again.

Completely untrue. Go to Wayne States statistics page. Most of their class comes from U of M. GO BLUE.

http://www.med.wayne.edu/admissions/applying/statistics.asp

There isn't an Ivy League in sight.

I think because Ivy Leagers apply to Wayne as a safe school. Which the admissions committee is probably well aware of, and might not offer someone with stats super higher than the average as to not waste everyone's time.

Chemdude:
Applying this year.

"GPA:3.9
MCAT: 37S
EC's: latino center council member, member of latino education committee, helped in the building of a school for my community, tutored disadvantaged middle school kids for one semester, latino center soccer team(is this even worth mentioning), etc.
Research: 2 years as an undergraduate research assistant in biology in two different labs. Starting a big chemistry research project this semester. (1 publication, 1 presentation at a national conference).

New addtion to EC's: I recently started a tutoring program for disadvantaged high school students in my community. I managed to find 6 college students(friends) that were willing to tutor these kids for free. I put up ads at our community center and we began tutoring a fair amount of students(17). Three of the students were immigrant girls who were getting tutored without their parents' permission. Unfortunately, the parents [fathers] of these girls did not want them to continue their education after they graduate high school (I know, wtf?!). I contacted the fathers of these girls and spoke to them about the future of their daughters. After hours of negotiation, I convinced two of the fathers to let their daughters attend college next year! (I think this is by far the most important accomplishment of my life)

Clincal Experience: ~170 hrs of volunteering at 2 different hospitals (1.5 years time span). 60 hours of shadowing.

BTW, I am not latino....

Hello everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster.....anyway, I just wanted to open with a thank you to everyone here on the forum because of all the hope, and sometimes, fear, that I have been feeling reading all the information you all have been getting from WSUSOM admissions. I say thank you simply because this is the only place I have been able to go where I know I am not riding this "emotional rollercoaster" alone, and even though everyone else in your world may not understand the difficulties of the process of applying to medical school, know that you are not going through it alone (just look at all the past posts!).

But down to the facts: I just got off of the phone with the admissions office where I asked if the waitlist was to be cut again. They said that they were not planning on it, and that everyone on the list is "acceptable" (hooray, I'm acceptable!).

I think you're in the wrong thread buddy.

I get why you would think that I am applying to Wayne State as a safety. That may be true for other ivy students with high stats. I am not applying to Wayne State as a safety; I have genuine interest in Wayne State. I did 2 summers of research at Wayne State. My publication and presentation were based on this research. One of my LORs is from a professor who has been teaching at Wayne State for 20 years. My hometown is a 30 min drive from Wayne State....you get the point...

Although Wayne is not my top choice, I would be very happy if I got accepted there because I know it is a great school.

Mention all of that in your secondary and you're sure to get in. Now if you don't mind, this thread must revert to blind speculation and desperate coddling of our hope that maybe one of us will be pulled off the waitlist in the next few weeks.

this is yoru stat??
and you are not aceepted hopeful...i can really feel for you now.

NO no no no...not mine...i was quoting someone who was asking a bunch of Wayne State waitlisters if they should apply here when they are trying to get into Ivy League Medical schools...

Best of luck. I hope you hear back soon 🙂

Mr.Eman;
Thanks for the info, and good to have you join in!

Ya please let us get back to this worrying about the wait list!

What I don't get is that anyone can write up a paragraph about saving a blind man once...do medical schools even need proof? It seems like people are just inflating their applications so much these days that when someone does have a great accomplishment it seems like nothing since everyone and their mom will put something like that on their apps.

Anyways thanks for joining new Wayne member and I'm glad no one else is going to get cut!👍
