Waitlist. Fifth freaking waitlist. Just want to cry.

waitlisted- withdrew.

They said during the interview that there is very little, if any, movement on the waitlist for the past few years so I'm going to assume that it will be no different this year.

P.S. Congrats to those who got accepted!

Out of curiosity, when did you interview? My group got a very different message...

Waitlised for MD/PhD. Gotta stay on this one I think, although I'm not optimistic about movement come June. Hoping for the best though! As it stands right now, I would go here if they accepted me off the waitlist. Come on BU!!!:xf:

Congrats to everyone who received good news today! 🙂

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow awesome buddy. So are you going to go here for sure??? I know you really had this as number 1 on your list some months back!!!!!!!!! 😀

I am PMing you.

Gah! That's so awesome. There's only like a 10% chance of getting in once you get to the interview. I wish they didn't interview so many people. It probably would have saved me a lot of heartache. I didn't even get waitlisted, and I adored this school! And my interviews were incredible. And I've been told by so many institutions that I have a competitive application. *sigh*. I just don't know what went wrong 🙁

Just got accepted via status update! Really excited! BTW, I never got a call from Dr. W (urology).

I'm truly sorry things didn't work out for you at BU, 72. This whole experience has been a rough one in general, and I'm going to be overjoyed once it's completely over this summer. I'm both grateful and frustrated by the waitlist decision, but it really is the best MD/PhD program I've interviewed at thus far so I'll wait it out.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm sorry I'm totally complaining to you guys on this board hahah. Oh the power of anonymity!

And I agree. This school had an incredible balance of medical and graduate education. And not being MSTP means they don't force feed you the PhD and actually train you to be independent scientists! I was absolutely 100% going to this school if they accepted me for MD/PhD.

I interviewed in early November. Dean Witzburg gave a whole speech about it... I wrote down in my notes - waitlist=rejection lmao...

Yeah at my interview (late Jan) he said that the waitlist would be ridiculously small (but it appears that isn't really the case... unless 100+ is small to them?), and that they try to do that because the waitlist doesn't move much. But considering the shear number of people who apply to BU, what may seem like a lot to us may be very little percentage-wise?

Hey y'all, accepted this morning as well. Hopefully they discover a mountain of financial aid money for me in the next month! Congrats everyone.

...p.s. is there a facebook group?

=( waitlisted as well 🙁.. ahh from being deferred to being waitlisted... this never ends ahhh. Congrats to those who got acceptances!!

Waitlisted as well.

Looks like I'm going to have to get ready to reapply, considering this was one of two interviews I received (other one at Geffen.. still waiting on that one..). Not going to lie, this is gonna be really hard to deal with.

Congrats to everyone else who got accepted- I'm happy that your hard work has been rewarded.

Waitlisted, but going to withdraw. Congrats to those accepted and good luck to those on the waitlist!

Waitlisted, but going to withdraw as well. And to be a further copycat, good luck to everyone else. xD

Also, there's been a lot of discussion about movement on the waitlist. On my interview day, he did say there hasn't been much movement from the waitlist in the past few years because more people accepted than they expected. He ALSO said that they would accept fewer people outright this year so to expect more movement!

So don't give up hope!

Don't give up just like that! Man the torpedos! send a letter of intent. Call the dean 2 weeks from now when the craziness settles! Get another letter of rec! You can do it!👍

Thanks mdphd- I'll keep that in mind. I did in fact send a letter of intent about a month ago.

Did that include an update on what you've done the last 6 months or so? Have you gotten a new administrative position? A job at a hospital? Went somewhere to provide care over winter or Spring Break?

Anything could help. 🙂

OMG!!!! My first acceptance! Accepted via email --> status page. No phone call.

I think I scared all of the patients in the waiting room when I checked my email at the desk LOL. It sort of went like this: "Whaa....WHAT?!?!? HEEEEEEEHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAH OH MY GOD AHHHHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH!!!!!"

Dean said that they accepted too many ppl right off the bat last year, hence the lack of waitlist movement, but that they were being more careful this year. My fingers are crossed for the ppl waiting!! :xf::luck::xf::luck::xf::luck::xf::luck::xf:

Waitlisted today, but i think i've already decided on another school so I might drop the waitlist. Good luck to everyone and congrats to those accepted!

Yeah, even based on the number of WL from sdn, looks like they have quite a bit on that list 😱 don't think I would be willing to fly all the way to east coast last minute so withdrawing. GL to the rest of you!

Waitlisted as well, after being on hold since January 🙁
The dean was out of town the day of my interview, but we did get a speech from Dr. Balady that mentioned that their waiting list sees VERY little movement.

GMSer, deferred in January and waitlisted now =(

Congrats to every1 accepted. Do the Outreach Van Project, it's awesome!

I knew 3 students who got accepted off the waitlist last year...so it is possible, but yeah not holding my breath...but maybe one of us will get lucky.

Goodluck folks!

Have all the decisions (waitlist/accept/reject) been released already? Is there anyone that still has their status pending and not updated?

Thanks for the response! I swear I remember reading it was Honors/P/F....its safe to say that that system is no longer in place?

Totally pass/fail first two years. Third year you have Honors/high pass/etc, and the grade is based on your clinical reviews and getting a certain score on the shelf. The score you need for Honors varies from rotation to rotation.

Third year is brutal, but very rewarding.

Fourth year will be sweet: fewer rotations and no exams!!!

Hey all,
I received the call on Friday with news that I had been accepted. Absolutely thrilled! I'm in a bit of a pickle however looking back to the "financing" part of interview day :scared:. I know they say that money should not be the maker of your decision, but BU is one of the most expensive medical schools in the country at the moment, and the city is not inexpensive either!

So my question for any current BU students out there is, how are you managing your finances there? Did you receive a reasonable amount of financial aid? I absolutely love this school, but I have the option of remaining at home at an in state school where the tuition is almost half of what it is here. I would be paying for school on my own and, my financial situation at the moment is...broke I'd say.

Any current BUSM students or people who really know the school want to chime in on some highlights of BU that stand out to you (ECs, curriculum, etc.)? Thanks!!

I'm curious where the idea that no one from the waitlist is accepted is coming from??? Its pretty clear from last year's thread that there were people accepted. Also, during my interview day, I got the sense that they don't see much movement, which is WHY they keep it small, but that if you waited long enough, they were able to accommodate most people. There is obviously some discrepancy on what is considered small, but its not over til its over!

Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'd like to know about this as well. On interview day the message seemed to be "Yeah, we cost a lot, life's tough." My state school is by no means cheap (60K/year total), but I would be saving some money. How do you make it work?

PS- accepted on Saturday, interviewed October, no phone call just an email.

Also- could someone pm me BU's match list for this year? Or let me know if this is already somewhere obvious..

My state school is ~25K less per year, but I'm leaning towards BU anyway. I'll have to look into it a little bit more but I think in the end, most people say go to the best school you can, and the money will take care of itself.

is it just me or people are either being accepted or put into the waiting list.

People were rejected last week as well. Look at the previous page. There was a string of rejections.

Did boston put less people on the wait list this year? I heard from the interview date that the yield of people accepting BU has increased the past few years...

It seems like most people got waitlisted and not many got rejected...

Financial Aid at BU is not the greatest. I don't know how it is for everyone else here, but I take out the maximum subsidized & unsubsidized loans offered to me and still have to cover $3-5k each semester out of my own pocket. And that's just for tuition, fees, and health insurance. When you fill out financial aid forms for BU (and there are 3 separate forms to fill out) they ask for everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Even if your family is not helping you pay for school, they require all parental tax information and take it into account. (As if my parents were going to sell their home just to pay for my schooling).

Again, that's just for tuition and fees. Everything else (food, rent, books, personal expense) I have to take care of on my own; savings, private loans, etc. Not gonna lie, its expensive. And Boston is not a cheap place to live either.

Honestly, if your state school is half the price... BU is great, but the first 2 years are (nearly) the same at any medical school, so you're paying all that money for just 2 years of rotations at BMC.

btw, I'm absolutely thrilled to be at BU and don't regret coming here for a second, but I didn't have the option of a half-price state school.

wow loans don't cover cost of living??? I thought student loans covered both cost of living and tuition.

At least for grad school at BU it did, so I'm confused as to why it is not working out that way for med school loans. That's quite surprising.
everybody's situation varies, based on parental income etc.

Oh. I didn't realize parental consideration was taken into account here. Some schools don't ask for parental information. So its all the same at those schools. Guess BU does things differently. That's interesting to note though.

Yeah, they really should tell you this up front. Don't think that just b/c you're not getting help from your family, that you'll qualify for more loans. If your parents make good money, it'll reflect in your loan award. Even if they don't currently make good money, but have investments, businesses, real estate, it all gets considered and reflects in how much financial aid you're offered.

I don't claim to know the exact details, but seeing as how my gross income last year was literally a few hundred dollars, I can't explain my pitiful loan amounts any other way. And I know a few classmates who complained about the same issue.

I still am trying to consider the advice I've heard to try to not let money be the deciding factor - especially for a school that I spent so much effort trying to get into! Of course, it's still a difficult decision.

In the end, we really will be paying it off, not too uncomfortably, regardless of whether it's by 66,000 dollars of a difference b/t a state school and a private school, right? I'm just saying that if we'll be in debt, I wonder how much of a difference that amount more would really make when our careers will pay us back in time.

🙄 Then again, I say that now but...

If I may ask: Are there any particular fields of medicine, or specialties which BU is known for placing it's students into for residency? Another approach to that question is, what are some of BU's stronger departments that attending students would really benefit from having access to through exposure? I personally am very interested in general and orthopedic surgery from past experiences, and would love to see good opportunities in that area. I know the breadth of BMC is obviously quite large, and there seems to be something for everyone.

I have a similar issue. When you look at cost projections, including deferred payments during residency, BU is much way higher than in-state. By my calculations by the end of residency I will have accrued around $400,000 at BU versus about $250,000 by the end of residency at my in-state school. That's a significant difference, not to mention the fact that interest on $400,000 paid over 10-20 years is not insignificant. I love BU but these numbers are pretty big!

This is for any current BU med students, do a fair amount of students live on campus? Some of the students I met on my interview day said they lived on campus, but at the undergrad college and took the BU shuttle over to the med campus everyday. Do a lot of students do this their first year? Is it affordable? Is it dorm-like living, where you have to share a bathroom with 50 ppl or apt. style with one or two other people?

Thx!
