glad to see nothing about "we assume you won't come here"-- just as I suspected

Just because they don't say that explicitly does not mean they do not do that. That would probably be a part of the initial screen. With 12,000 applications and only room to interview 1,000, it would be unwise of them to interview applicants with stats far above their average. They've been doing this for years and probably have a decent idea of the type of students that will and will not matriculate there. Just my opinion, obviously.

"we are forced to make many arbitrary and subjective decisions"

Sounds about right.

Dude drop it already. And even if a school did assume it, do you really think they would be so classless to say it out loud to the student in their rejection email? You are naive if you think so. But in avoid the tiger's case I'm sure that is hardly the reason as he doesn't have the numbers of a harvard grad even if he has good numbers.
gujuDoc you just made me laugh because now I can say "NOT A DUDE!! ME = FEMALE!"

But I highly doubt they rejected me for "being too good for the school." I didn't even bother applying to Harvard or Hopkins. Right now I am more worried about even getting an interview.

... of course... maybe this is a sign that my application is awesome and I will soon hear back from Mayo regarding an interview even though they haven't seen my LORs yet.

sorry to hear tiger, maybe if they saw how awesome your pink blonde hair is they would reconsider =(

I personally wouldn't stress your rejection. With so many applicants, they are probably looking for someone fairly specific-- one who THEY think will make a good fit, hence the part about it being arbitrary and subjective-- if I had to guess. I am pretty sure its not an issue of a glaring red flag.

Rejected..not to bummed because my initial fear would have been something was wrong with my LORs or something...but with one interview invite...that's not my concern. Guess this is one of those schools that I would throw in the "reject" pile because obviously, with the number of schools we apply to, rejections are probably greater than interview invites and whatnot.

that's one way to "think positively". everyone gets rejected from somewhere..this is just one of those schoools.

Did you read my post at all? You'd know I said I highly doubt you were rejected for that reason. God why are people attacking me and trying to egg me on???

Give it a rest.

I know they didn't reject you for being too good but there is a possibility those other people were and even if they were, my only point was they weren't going to write that in a rejection letter. Good god, people need to take a chill pill and stop putting words into my mouth.

Good luck. I'm sorry for your not getting past the initial screening. I wish you well.

Whoa, no one was attacking you. Perhaps you could take your own advice and settle down.

So if I have been complete since 7/12 and havent been rejected yet, this is a good sign? Haha one can only dream.

I was rejected as of today and was complete on 7/7..but you never know, you may be invited for an interview!

Oh wow. So sorry to hear that. Mine was completed 07/15. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I was completed 8 days later than you... so let's give it a week until I get mine.

Complete 7/2 here (no rejection...yet). I don't see any patterns going on here- but it did seem like last year there were way more rejections all at once instead of this slow stream.

I was more referencing to how we, Asyouwereatrio and I, apply to practically all the same schools... which is possibly a result of similar goals/fit, and possibly even similar stats? So I thought his rejection can only mean mine is not far behind.

Though... my residency in MA and his in CA might make a huge difference in this case.

Ya, no worries...Good luck to you though! I think that the process is random..there is something in your app that will attract htem more than mine (*assuming you don't get rejected).

As an aside, I wanted to vent about the wording of the rejection letter in this regard:

"Most of the candidates we are considering this year are qualified to attend medical school and are likely to make important contributions to our profession and to society. Sadly, with more than 100 applicants for every seat in the class, we are forced to deny many exceptional people."

The first sentence "most...to society" implies that WE as rejects are not qualified to attend medical school ...maybe I'm just being sensitive..and I realise they don't even mean it in this way, but it's the way I interpreted upon first read.

Def was not attacking you gujuDoc. I apologize that your thought I was. I was agreeing with your statement and providing some evidence... but pointing out that you referred to me as a dude (which amuses me because of your signature under your forum ID )

This is the response I received:

I assume it was a generic one, but it was a nice note. Either way, hopefully it'll help the SDN community in some way 🙂 Good luck to the remaining applicants!

Wow, thanks for posting this email they sent you. It's really helpful! Well, no rejection for me yet... And I have worse stats than most of you that were already rejected. I'm guessing my letter is coming soon too... 🙁

I wasn't offended by your comment about my line about being female. I thought you were doing like that queso person and getting on me again for making the comment that it is a possibility that some people were rejected for being over qualified.
ohhh I see now. I can be pretty oblivious at times and hadn't really been paying attention to that conversation. I am sure plenty of people get rejected for being too qualified (and destined for a top ten)... otherwise only like 2,000 people applying to medical school would be interviewed/accepted into medical school out of the 40,000 of us. I would like to think I am one of those 2,000 🙂 hehe

Oh oops I shoulda checked your profile again for your sex. Only paid attn to your stats and other stuff when I looked at it.

I do wish you well. You seem to have a good profile that you will get in somewhere. The question remains where that somewhere is. I sincerely wish you all the best for the cycle.

Oh and I wrote that thing about being female cuz people kept assuming I was male and it was getting annoying listening to it. Now they know I'm a girl and there is no excuse for them calling me a guy. Although I suppose it is always easier to assume a person is a guy unless they have a girlie looking avatar for some reason. I've done it myself a lot only to find out the person was female.

wait, I was attacking you? Thats news to me-- please chill out a little..

And your stats please?

yup. i just elaborated on some extracurriculars, not too long.

and bulldog, i come from a long line of yankees fans, so growing up in connecticut made for some serious rivalry. we can find common ground in the celtics though (ray allen was one of my childhood heroes!) 🙂

I do... 🙁. Raised in Boston. Are Red Sox fans that bad? 🙁 I love being around them and am one myself.

Respectfully, Red Sox fans are among the most obnoxious sports fans I have run across. I am from Colorado and since our state is kind of a magnet now for people moving from other places, our sporting events tend to draw a lot of people rooting for the away team. For instance, when the Steelers played here against the Broncos, Steelers fans filled up 75% of the stadium!

I went to a Red Sox vs. Rockies game a couple of weeks ago. I've never been jibed more often by opposing fans, than at that game 😛 Probably 30% of the fans there were Red Sox fans, and they did as much trash-talking as the 70% home team fans.

Don't even get me started about when the Rockies got utterly routed by the Red Sox two years ago in the World Series. I was on my college campus in Washington state then, and I had trouble watching games in public because everyone would heckle me for cheering for the Rockies.

I would imagine being a Red Sox fan among like-minded fans would be quite nice since there would be a strong feeling of camaraderie. However, being on the other side is not enjoyable at all.

I generally only have problems with four sports teams in the world: Yankees, Red Sox, Red Wings, and Lakers. All for obvious reasons 🙂

Truth be told though, I don't really care about sports very much. I would love to live in Boston, just because Boston is what it is. I think I could tolerate the Red Sox fans.

It is always hard to be in the presence of awesomeness and not be awesome.

Fortunately, during the game I went to, we had a walkoff double-homerun comeback in the 9th inning that left all the Red Sox fans super emo at the end of the game 🙂 Best baseball game I've ever been to in person. There's nothing like feeling your team's doom is certain, and then all of a sudden seeing baseballs soaring over the fence.

I hate filling out this prereq grid >_<

For humanities (on the pre-req grid) it says it includes language...do you think that includes foreign language? I'm a Spanish major so...I have a lot of those language credits 🙂

Yeah I would include them 🙂 I included my language classes myself... 20/20 Humanities courses, anyone?

I hated that part too til I saw the worse ones where you have to look up which classes with titles and course numbers and semesters and realized it was more tedious then this one.

I never find these sections to be that bad. If you print out your processed AMCAS, the filling in becomes A LOT easier.

Red Sox fans are worse than Yankee fans. Yankees are big and bad because they spend all that money, and Red Sox fans like to think of themselves as some kind of underdogs, or a lovable losers, but they spend money money than everyone except the Yankees. The only difference between the two is that Yankees spend money and win, while the Red Sox spend money and mostly lose. They are not the Pirates - now those fans you can have sympathy for.

There is nothing more heinous than a Yankees fan except, maybe, a Yankees player.

A-rod is an $$hole and Jeter is an $$hole pretending to be a modest, nice guy, which is even worse.

Really, the rest of the nation started to lose their sympathy (if they even had any to begin with) for Boston sports fans once the Patriots had won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years. That last victory against the Eagles came at the same time the Red Sox won the World Series, and so 2004 was, I believe, the year that Boston could no longer be known as the city full of "lovable losers"...instead we dubbed ourselves "The City of Champions" (especially after the Red Sox won again in 2007 and the Celtics won in 2008).

With championships come haters, so I don't pay attention to them. Boston has always been my home (although I'm definitely not a rude "m@$$hole" nor am I someone with an annoying Boston accent), so I will always root for every single Boston sports team passionately.

Well, you're generalizing there, because I know many people who are very intelligent pre-meds and they have Boston accents. To a degree, people can't help the environment they in which they were brought up (generally kids get the accent from their parents, and so on), but like I've said, this doesn't mean they're unintelligent at all.

Rude drivers, on the other hand...yeah I'll go ahead and generalize and say they're all rude drivers. The vast majority of Bostonians without the accent are also prone to a bit of road rage. I rarely honk at people when I'm in Boston (even if they were at fault), because I'm afraid of being viciously cursed out. 🙄

I respect that 🙂 Some people take it further, though.

Rejected. Good luck to the rest of you!
