I think being able to pay for school and for other trivialities such as rent or food balances well against the annoyance of filling out the forms.:d
lol hence why I filled them out yesterday... it's just annoying how everyone has their own form and can't just take fafsa. Seems more inefficient to me?

Edit2: Just realized I had a question I bet you guys would know about. I filed my taxes online, does fin. aid want me to print out and physically sign+date a copy of my tax return and then mail it to them?

So jealous of you guys who've finished your fin aid forms...I think I'll be lucky if my dad can get his 2010 info to me by March 31 :/

I'm wondering this too. Do they need my tax return even if I'm not applying for institutional grants/loans (only for Stafford loans)?

ooh, oooh, I have another question! Are any of you current students doing the applied anatomy program? I'm interested but it seems like A. Lot. Of. Work.

Yes, at least this is what I've done for all my undergrad tax verification (figure its the same thing). Remember you "signed" your taxes with your PIN when you sent it to the IRS electronically but you can't do that when you send it to schools, so you have to go old school and sign it for real.

Yes schools need your tax returns (basically to verify your FAFSA) even if you're applying only for Stafford loans. They don't need your parents' though if you're only applying for Stafford loans and NOT for any school need based money.

Is that a twitter feed for CCLCM as well? Does this mean that I have to break down and get one of those accounts now?

The twitter feed is primarily for the university program and for pre-med/applying-to-med school info.

I know this is a ways off but for clinical rotations how does learning/examinations work?

I have repressed the whole FAFSA / need access form experience in the recesses of my mind...all too soon to be relived after I file this year.
But I like to pay rent and eat and stuff, jumping through the requisite hoops looks a little less daunting 😛

(Note: this is the same thing you have to jump thru at many schools. And you might get some free/cheap $ out of it!)

I recommend asking the fin aid office. They are friendly.

I'm assuming those of us on hold don't need to worry about the extra, Case specific financial aid forms until accepted, correct? Talk of deadlines coming up for things outside of FAFSA make me wonder if all potential students should file before whatever the Case specific deadline is. Sorry if this is obvious or was discussed previously, I couldn't find mention of it.

You don't have to worry about extra-FAFSA stuff yet. According to the Financial Aid Handbook (page 29), "The Deadline is March 31st...Applications for School of Medicine Aid after the deadline may result in no financial aid being available! This applies to all students except for late acceptances."

But just so you know - once you get accepted, you'll be required to not only supply your Federal 1040 information, but also your parents' - no matter your age or how long you've been financially independent.

Correct. Don't submit the Case-specific stuff yet. I was accepted in early May, and due to my parents' complications in having not gotten them finalized yet (srsly, guys, both of you?!) I got them both in a few weeks later, and still got loans and a grant. Just do it asap and you're good.

The best thing you can do to get ready is to file your own taxes (if applicable) and request that your parents go ahead and do it asap. It's a pain to provide it, but fyi whatever they make isn't entirely a dealbreaker. They take the whole picture into consideration. Perhaps unless your dad is Bill Gates buying up Da Vinci's original sketchbooks and what not.

Thanks for the tips. I always hated that "you must provide your parents' info" for undergrad, and now especially for med school. Even if the formulas say they can afford it, they won't contribute anything. Frustrating...

Thanks you two!

Does anyone know when the committee will be meeting to discuss applicants currently on hold? I know that its in March, but I was wondering if there was a specific day/date we could anticipate.

Committee does not meet again to discuss on hold applicants. The committee has already voted on all the interviewed applicants, Christian/Dr. Mehta now make the decisions for applicants on hold, taking the committee's original vote under consideration. Movement will largely occur after the deadline to confirm your desire to matriculate, which is May 1 I believe.

Right. There's not a new committee; they will create the wait list this month. :luck:

Eeek! That's exciting and terrifying. Any ballpark on when it's usually released/announced? Or is it pretty irregular?

I was curious about this, and it's actually April 15 (for Case), according to this:

https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/amcas/153900/aamc_recommendations_for_applicants.html

so for everyone with an "on hold" status right now, we will either end up on the waitlist or be rejected? someone told me on interview day that you could still be accepted outright from the on hold category. is that wrong?

I checked on that, and no one is outright accepted from on-hold. There will be people who are put on the waitlist and those who are not, in mid-late March. Then the applicants they want the most will come right off the waitlist as soon as they have openings, in May.

I'm going to believe this instead. May 1st, everyone (unless you're CCLCM)!

Hmm... I guess it's May 1st then. That's weird that they quote AAMC policy yet deviate from it. Their links are broken, so maybe they haven't updated their policy yet if it recently changed? Thanks for the link.

I think the idea behind the AAMC policy is that they can have their decision date as early as April 15th if they would like, but they don't have to, they can have it later if they want (and they can't have it earlier).

Maybe... but I thought the policy was more meant to get things moving along so there wasn't a huge scramble right before classes started, or at least to minimize it. My impression was that it wasn't an option to have that strong recommendation occur later than April 15th for schools that started before August - the wording is the same for the normal May 15th deadline.

At any rate, I won't be lucky enough to worry about that anyway haha. Someone who is sitting on an acceptance might want to clear that up for themselves though.

The idea is that we (Case) know full well that you're probably considering other schools and waiting on finaid packages. It wouldn't be very fair for us (or good for you) to force you to make a decision before you have the full picture. Awfully hard to make an informed decision without being informed, right?

As to being lucky, I wouldn't count yourself out just yet. Plenty of people get off the waitlist every year.👍

Thanks for the clarity, I was under the impression that the AAMC recommendations, for both admissions departments and students, were really a requirement/do it or we'll be angry 🙂.

Thanks for the encouragement! I might get off the waitlist, but definitely not before the big jump on May 1st (why I was so interested in this date, and if it was April 15th).

Is anyone going to the CCLCM second look coming from the D.C./M.D./V.A. area?

I'm driving up from that area and would love to be able to car pool. We can do a "whoever doesn't drive pays for gas" kind of system. In the interest of keeping things anonymous (its a very small program) I made up an alternative identity to post this, but if you're interested and PM me I'll gladly let you know my usual SDN name.

I can even send you text from the invite letter so you know I'm not a physcho killer, except in the off chance that Dean Franco actually invited a psycho killer, then you're out of luck.

Anyways, PM me if interested. I have excellent taste in road trip music and look forward to meeting potential future classmates!

did anyone else just get the "hold" email? i was under the impression that the hold list was the alternate list..and that we'd be directly accepted off the hold. but apparently it's the waitlist to get onto the alternate list? was anyone else under the same wrong impression? lol

Ya I just got it too. The whole hold vs alternate thing can be confusing, and I think SDN was a good resource, Auriga in particular, for clearing that up for me.

you're not alone, lol. i'm pretty sure christian or someone else told my interview group that applicants could be accepted off the "on hold" status at any point until may. and then in may, those not accepted would be put onto the alternate list. gotta love all these med school statuses like on hold, waitlist, alternate, deferred, etc

Haha, the Death Cab for Cutie song "Different Names for the Same Thing" came to mind after reading that post! You should add "remain under consideration" to that list 🙂

My apologies if this question has already been asked/answered, but how long does it usually take for the various financial aid forms to get checked off as complete? Thanks! 😀

Why on earth would we make a hold list in May???😕

I think you misheard.😳

i was told that lots of applicants get put on the "on hold" status and that once you get that status, your app will be looked at again later. the way it was phrased made it seem like you could be accepted outright from the on hold status. the email we received earlier made it a little more clear. my understanding is that those of us on hold have to wait for a decision on whether we'll be invited to the alternate list or rejected

Seems tense around here. Yeah I got the hold email too. Thanks! I like mail! Anyone want to go get some nachos? Anyone here not already accepted to a good med school? Didn't think so... Forget the nachos, how about a meatball sub?🙂 And some non-hand crafted, non-light, beer!! Out of a bottle! 😉 All will be settled in good time. When I think back on this crazy process, I will always smile about this thread, you guys are awesome!

I will take you up on the nachos! And the beer! I think I live at least 1000 miles away from you though 🙁

So I just booked my plane ticket for second look! Minneapolis to Cleveland ain't so cheap! 🙁🙁 Who else is totally pumped for revisit?

Sigh, I wanna go SO badly. Alas, CA to Cleveland ain't so cheap either. 🙁

^I'm pumped! But yeah, LA to CLE is weirdly expensive...but I'm happy that I got a better deal this time than I did for my interview.

CLE airport is a very expensive airport to fly to/from, and I never understood why. Akron is like an hour away, and ticket are a lot cheaper to there. It's really annoying.

Completely agree. I flew in from Philly to Akron and rented a car as well, including parking my own car in Philly. The total cost was still cheaper than just a plane ticket from Philly to CLE. I guess it's more economical to do it that way if one is looking to save money. That's what I'm gonna be doing again for 2nd look.

Man, I'd totally do that if I were old enough to rent a car...👎

In many states, you can rent a car at 18 or 21, it's just more expensive.

OK rephrase, I'd totally do that if I were old enough that renting a car wouldn't negate the savings afforded by flying into Akron instead of Cleveland.
