Hey guys-
Does anyone know if there are decent downhill ski areas around Cleveland or within a reasonable drive? Do students ever organize trips? I'm really into skiing and it would be great to find a good place to go.

It depends on how into skiing you are. If you're into easy, recreational short runs, there's always Brandywine/Boston Mills near Akron, which is a 30-40 minute drive from school. There are a lot of easy slopes there, so it's good for beginners.

If you're into things that are actually mountains, I think there's a place in Pennsylvania and Holiday Valley in New York that people like to organize weekends for.

I checked out the trail map of Boston Mills/Brandywine...not much to look at, but I figure I'll bring my skis to maybe take an occassional afternoon trip to scratch the itch. I think you'll probably have to get on a plane to do justice to the word "skiing." Winter break med school ski trip??

hey guys earlier I think someone said that the last day to withdraw from other acceptances was April 15th, but I just checked iapply, and it's actually May 2nd. This is good b/c there are a few other second look weekends for other schools after Case's throughout April.
Thanks for the info! I went by something from another source; I'd trust iApply first tho 😉

I changed my post on dates accordingly.

Just got an email to check my status at Case and was accepted! Interviewed last Monday, Feb 21. Yay!

just got into case too! invited to apply for merit scholarships! it was nice to get an acceptance after a string of waitlists.

interviewed 2/15

also, does anybody know if everybody gets invited to apply for the merit scholarships. if not, how many of the people who are invited get them?

Looks like I'm on hold. I just want to have a final decision! Blargh indecisiveness! Congrats to all who are in!

Does anyone know if this is true for CCLCM as well, because their letter regarding the high hold list said we should find out by April 15th?

Does anyone know if being on the Hold list at CCLCM means there is slim to no chance. Not sure how many high holds there are and how much the list moves.

Would the goldwater scholarship help in admission to the 5 year no tuition program?

Just FYI guys, I got the merit scholarship info today and this is the essay prompt: "Submit to us an essay comprised of no more than 500 words which describes how an education from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine will lead you to accomplish your career goals and how you will add to the Case Western community."

Did you mean hold or high hold?
I am very interested in the answer to this question as well.

Gahhhhhh CCLCM and Vanderbilt MSTP revisit weekends overlap! Nooooooo 🙁

I know! I'm in the same situation (Vandy MD, though, not MSTP). I'm going to go to both, but time is going to be tight that weekend...

It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home.😉

Not everyone gets invited to apply to the merit scholarships ::sadface::
😛

Not sure how many do.

Don't worry, I didn't get invited to apply for merit scholarships either. I think about 80 accepted people are invited to apply every year, and there are 15-20 awarded in the end (going off of what I vaguely remember from the F.A. talk on interview day).

BTW...Congrats to Myuu and her peeps on finishing Block 6...and therefore all of the preclinical material of medical school! This is the end forever of the epic saga of structured cycles of classroom-books-study-exams that has monopolized your life since kindergarten. Wow, I'm only a year from that...whee!

I present a penguin ninja in your honor. Not as mighty as the great penguinja, but certainly fierce and adorable.

Midfieldrulz...
Regarding your top post - Bikini, speedo, and moomoo clad bodies stretched along the white sandy beach get so boring after a while...so does sitting at a tiki bar toasting cruise ships go by...

It'd be nice to see snow down south sometimes...although they'd probably call a state of emergency...after all, we get "severe temperatures expected" announcements at work anytime it drops below 50 =)

Accepted!! I loved the school and I'm so excited! Cleveland, here I come!

Alright! Muchos congrats everyone!

Anyone else very pumped for second look 🙂?

Supposedly Case does a pretty great job in the scheme of 2nd looks.

Oh, my. Once when I was little (and living in a mid-atlantic state), the temperature dropped to an incomprehensible 2º. I did get out of school that day, but points to them for keeping it open until the power went out.

Oh, we do, my friend. We do.😎😀

Receiving these weekly e-mails from Chris Essman is making this decision very hard. I feel like I'm already a part of the school when I open one of these e-mails up!

Exactly! Keep that happy thought!😀

I could definitely hang out with you! If that's boring, bring it and bore me some more!!

I like the change of seasons, but right now I'm suffering from a severe vitamin D deficiency. Wait, what's that yellow thing in the sky again? I've forgotten it's been so long.

I don't even wear a jacket if it hits 50. That's a heat wave around here.

👍 I get where you're coming from. I would KILL for some 50 degree weather right about now. Yesterday I don't think it got into the double digits here in MN. A few weeks ago it hit 46 and people were wearing shorts.

I wouldn't mind some 50º weather. I was thinking maybe it'd happen on tuesday, as it was 35º already by 8am with an expected high of 36º. I told one of my friends "Ah, it's already 35º--we'll probably pick up 10º or so!" Unfortunately, it never hit 36º. The entire day was a downward spiral to 20º.

WHY MUST YOU TEMPT ME WITH ACTUAL 50º WEEKS, CLEVELAND?!

(That one week was really nice!😍)

(Weather usually starts being perfect at 2nd look! I'm not even kidding!)

^ Now that's what I call connections! With Myuu, why am I not surprised? Now if you can just do something about the weather this weekend? Pretty please? 😉

I'm trying, but I think my meteorological powers need recharging.🙁

I'm sorry if this was asked before but how is anatomy setup? I know some schools do 10 or 12 weeks to start M-1 whereas others do it throughout the first two years.

We do it throughout the first two years and have it set up so that as you address relevant topics in your other lectures (and IQ!), you'll hit the same organs/areas in anatomy.

For example, let's say you're in block three and you're studying GI. In lecture/IQ you're covering the physiology and pathology involved, while in anatomy, you're seeing it and learning to understand why, mechanically, it works the way it does (and how awesome that is). I think that's a great way of reinforcing material. But I could be biased.😀

+1 for Star Wars reference. You're full of win lately!
Yes, if I'm fortunate enough to travel the same halls as the Penguinja, I figured I better be ready for her flashing Wakizashi. That's why I've chosen the light saber. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon from a more civilized age.😉

I think that's a great way to reinforce the material. I can understand the bias. When are labs typically held? From the schedule I've seen it looks like you're in lecture or IQ in the morning so are labs in the afternoon or in the morning too?

Is there anything about Case current students don't like?

Sign in the grocery today, "Due to freezing weather in vegtable growing states, we have been unable to get eggplant. We apologize for the inconvenience."
NO problem at all, the world is saved!!!

These are the kind of posts you get when nobody has anything to say for 2 days! Gotta be a record! You guys must be tearing it up down at Boston Mills!😉

You saying you don't like eggplant?:ninja:

Reminds me too much of the pods in Alien. I'm always afraid something is going to pop out of them! I guess....I...I just don't trust them!

Have you ever noticed that they make sort of a hollow noise if you tap them....but THEY AREN'T HOLLOW?! 😱

Man, IDK how y'all med students can stand having to fill out FAFSA and what-not annually. This is the first time I've had to go through it (certainly not as bad as folks who filled it out in UG) and it's darn obnoxious. Plus needaccess, CSS, etc...

I think being able to pay for school and for other trivialities such as rent or food balances well against the annoyance of filling out the forms.:d

👍 Def agree. Plus once you do it a few times and know what to expect, know what info you need, etc, it goes a lot quicker.

Filling out the Need Access form was a PITA, simply because it was a lot of additional work that I had to ask my dad to do that he didn't really have time for.. Glad to be done now though!

No I won't touch them, did you see what happened to that guy on the Nostromo? And you're right, they aren't hollow, there's an alien in there ready to pop out!😱
