I got the email
"Your status with the Case School of Medicine University Program has been recently updated. Please log onto iApply and check the status page to see your most recent messages."

But then I logged on and didn't see any changes under Status..

Has this happened to anyone else?

I got an interview for the college track only, and an error page showed up when I tried to click on the website the adcom provided in the invitation letter to schedule an interview. Does anyone had that same problem, or is it just me?? do i just have to call the admission office to correct my prob?? sigh...

also, does anyone know how many interviews the CCLCM give out and how many they accept?

Fear not. Wait and try back in a few hours and it should work. This whole thing happened to me last week. I recieved the e-mail about the status change, but it wasn't different until a couple of hours later when it said that I was invited for an interview. Then when I clicked on it to schedule the interview I got an error page. A couple of hours later it was working. Their system must just be wacky. So, just wait it out and it should be fine. Congrats btw!

Mine is working fine, but I received it last week. It had dates open from September through like January or something.

As for CCLCM, I think I read online that 1500 apply, 300 get interviews, and 32 matriculate (no idea what actual accepted is). ***These are just rough estimates from what I read, it's on the website somewhere if you look***

on the schedule link, remove the last letter (it's a c) it should be .aspx and NOT .aspxc

I would definitely take the RTA unless you're getting in late at night. It's super cheap and more or less takes you where you need to go, with some modifications.

That's actually pretty interesting that a lot of people are going into surgical fields; maybe there are a bunch of engineers who like ortho or something?
I'm sure that's part of it. Ortho does seem to be pretty popular--last I heard, there are three people in my class applying in ortho. 🙂

Sadly, I'll be in Toronto that weekend, as ideal as it is.😳
You suck. 👎

What about the weekend after? I.e., Sept. 11-12?

Went with Oct 25/26...otherwise it would have been four weeks in a row...ugh.
👍

Placed on hold for UP.

Do people ever get placed off hold? Should I be writing an update letter to them now?
Yes, some people on hold do get invites later. If you had no chance of getting an invite, they would have just rejected you outright. As for the update letter, I think if you have something significant to update your app with (new grades, a new pub or poster presentation, new significant EC, etc.) then sure, by all means, let them know.

On hold too for UP 🙁 From what I've heard it is still fairly possible to get an interview since Case rejects people outright at this point too? Can somebody who actually knows what they are talking about confirm this? 🙂
See above.

Its only like a $1.50 and the last time I took it (five or six years ago) they were still giving out Susan B Anthony dollars as change.
Haha, you sound like someone's granddad. "Back in my day, sonny, the RTA only cost $1.50, and they gave your change in silver dollars!" 😛

Nowadays, the RTA costs $2.25, and they don't give you change. If you want to ride the RTA, I recommend bringing several quarters and ones.

As for CCLCM, I think I read online that 1500 apply, 300 get interviews, and 32 matriculate (no idea what actual accepted is). ***These are just rough estimates from what I read, it's on the website somewhere if you look***
Those were last year's stats. Approximately 55 were accepted. Just as an FYI, it's likely that CCLCM will be interviewing fewer people this year, more in the range of 250.

I agree.

The cab idea could be a good one if you can set it up. My experience with calling cabs has been that they tend not to show up on a reliable basis. This isn't Chicago or New York where you can step outside and whistle!

I would recommend that those of you who are staying at Case (Glidden House) or CCF (one of the Intercontinental Hotels or the Guesthouse) and arrive in Cleveland during the day should take the Red Line train from the airport to Tower City, and then get on the Health Line bus, which goes from Tower City directly to both Case and CCF and passes fairly close by to all of the above-mentioned hotels. I promise you won't get lost, because you can only go in one direction from the airport on the Red Line and only in one direction from Tower City on the Health Line. 🙂

If you're coming in late at night, I would splurge for the shuttle. Case and CCF are both urban campuses, and it's not a great idea to be wandering around these areas late at night, especially if you're by yourself and you're not really sure where you're going. Some things like your safety are worth paying a little extra for, and with as much as med school costs, an extra $30 or $40 is pretty miniscule. If you want to save money, then stay with a student host and save the hotel fee.

Hey guys, I had a few questions I was hoping you could answer.

I am going to be applying to both programs next year.

Which is the one that provides a full scholarship? What do they look for in terms of acceptance? Like what is the average MCAT and GPA.

Would this be enough research - 2 years, 1 textbook chapter co-authorship, 1 case report?

What else does the admission committee value? How can I maximize my chances?

It's Myuu's berfday today! Wish her a Happy birthday and thank her for all her hard work answering your questions.

happy birthday Myuu! Thank you for all the wonderfulness you've contributed!!

Oh, wow. Thanks guys!!!😀

Hey happy birthday!

I'm really excited about these interviews. 13th and 14th of Sept. I really really like CCLCM especially; the acceptance rate is making me way nervous though! Gonna have to make sure they see my passion for research even tho I only got into it recently [compared to other applicants] 🙂

Yeah the same thing happened to me on Friday. I still don't see any changes under my status in iapply. BeardownAz has your status changed on iapply yet?

So I'm interviewing for UP and CP in a few weeks and I had a quick question about CCLCM. I did 2 years of research as an undergrad with a pub, 2 presentations, and 2 posters. But since graduating a few months ago, I have some huge additions in research.
1. I'm employed full-time (and paid) on a clinical research study for the next 6 months.
2. I've been doing separate unpaid research at a high ranking medical school with expected publications as well (started 2 months ago and will continue all year)
3. Shadowing academic medicine doctors.

So my question is: Do I bring an updated list of my research to the interview, or just verbally explain it to them? I want the admissions committee to see that I am committed to research and I'm worried that just telling my interviewer may not get the message relayed.

Also, would it be appropriate to send an update with these things to other schools I haven't yet received interviews at?

Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea to do that, and there is no question that is enough stuff to warrant an update (crazy people send updates to say they got an A on a test).

All of your questions are answered on the school websites:
Case UP (also provides some general info about CCLCM).
CCLCM
You should also read the MSAR entry for Case, which provides aggregate stats for both programs.

While we're on this topic, here's a piece of advice for those of you who are interviewing, both at Case and at other schools: make sure that you read the websites of each school before you go on the interview. You should already have a basic understanding of the curriculum before your interview, and you shouldn't be asking questions that are already answered on line. It makes you look lazy and unprepared, which makes a very bad impression on interviewers and adcomms. The schools go to a lot of trouble to set up these websites to provide you with this info, so take advantage of them. 🙂

It's Myuu's berfday today! Wish her a Happy birthday and thank her for all her hard work answering your questions.

I <3 myuu.

Keep in mind though that not every applicant has an equal chance of being accepted. Even among people who interviewed, it's not like the adcomm rates them all equally. In other words, some people have a lot higher post-interview odds of getting accepted than others do. Since you got an invite to both programs this early, you are obviously pretty competitive on paper. Just go to your interview and show that you're interested and that you think you'll be a good fit (if you do think so). Good luck, hope your interviews are fun!

Definitely update both programs. You can tell them about it when you come visit, but it's probably a good idea to give them something written (either by mail/email or physically hand them an update letter when you get here). That way, they can put it in your file for the adcomm to look at later when they're reviewing your app. Good luck with your interviews!

Ok, different question. My school only sends out a premedical packet. On the site, they want a premedical packet and a research advisor letter. Will i not be accepted if my school doesnt seperate letteR?

These are my two interview days as well! I guess I will be seeing you there!

If that letter is in the packet, then you will be fine.👍:luck:

By packet i meant a composite of letters, as such, no letter is in there but the committee uses pieces from all letters (allegedly).

What to do?

Interview Invite scheduled for September 20.

I submitted July 21 but was not marked as complete till August 19. 😕

3.7/39

1. I think this is why it's so hard to think of good questions about the school itself and why it's a whole lot easier to say 'well what's your favorite thing about CCLCM?' or whatever 🙂

2. Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better!

These are my two interview days as well! I guess I will be seeing you there!

Sweet, don't be afraid to ask me if I'm me.. I figure there won't be many of us there anyway.

By packet i meant a composite of letters, as such, no letter is in there but the committee uses pieces from all letters (allegedly).

What to do?

I would call and ask and then failing that, see if you can get your PI to submit the letter separately.

Since your school provides committee letters, you need one committee letter AND one research letter. So you need to ask your PI to write a separate letter, get a committee letter, and send both of them. Just have your PI send the research letter directly to the school if you're not going to use it anywhere else. If you are going to send it to a bunch of other schools, then splurge on a subscription to Interfolio and have your PI send the letter to Interfolio. Then you can send it to as many schools as you want without having to bug your PI to mail off more copies. Problem solved. 🙂

These are my two interview days as well! I guess I will be seeing you there!
I'll be in town on 9/13, so I'll try to stop by and say hello. I'll be easy to pick out, the only fifth year in a sea of first years. 😀

They're changing the interview day schedule around a little this year, so I guess I should ask you guys if lunch is still at 11:30 and wrap up at 3:45?

You shouldn't have to strain yourself thinking of questions like that. When you read the website, jot down notes of things you like or want to know more about. For example, one thing a lot of people ask about is how PBL works. PBL is mentioned on the site, but it's not very thoroughly explained, so it's a more than fair question. But you shouldn't ask if the entire curriculum is PBL, because if you read about the curriculum on the website, you would already know that it's not. Make sense?

2. Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better!
Good, that's my night job. 🙂

So seriously, I don't understand why people assume that the 250 interviewees all have an equal chance of getting accepted. I mean, if you interview and get accepted at 10 med schools, is there an equal 10% chance that you'll end up attending each of them? Of course not. There are some that are your dream schools, and some that you're applying to as safety schools. It works the other way too. There are some people who are dream applicants that the med school really wants, and some people who are rejected post-interview as poor fits, plus everything in between.

Yeah both of your points make a lot of sense. I hadn't thought about it that way, which actually makes me feel better about the process overall, too.

Actually, I have a question for you (and any other CCLCM student): what's the social/ec's atmosphere like? Do students have time to pursue other passions or hang/party on a friday or whatever?

Like I said, the fact that you got invites to both programs for September is a very, very good sign. I predict many more invites in your near future. 🙂

Sure. It's a small class, so it's even possible to fit us all into one apartment. 😀

What kinds of things people do varies by year. First year is awesome. You have a lot of free time: three afternoons per week plus all day Thursday. A lot of people do things like take grad school classes, continue with their summer research, shadow in a specialty they think they want to do, and volunteer. Some popular volunteer gigs are admissions (besides meeting all of you cool people, free lunch!) and CHI, which is the student-run weekly health fair. We also have access to everything over at the Case campus, which is one mile away from CCF. Also, lots of first years do Doc Opera, which is the Case variety show to raise money for the Cleveland Free Clinic.

Second year is kind of like first year but busier, so the parties and ECs definitely decrease a bit. But you still have plenty of time to hang out with friends and do some ECs.

Third year (clinical rotations, which sometimes happens fourth year chronologically) is the busiest of all. You won't be able to do much EC-wise on most of your inpatient rotations because you're working up to 80 hours per week, including taking call on nights and weekends. Outpatient rotations are more like 40 hours per week with no nights or weekends, so you have a lot more free time.

Fourth year (last year of med school, which often happens fifth year chronologically) is all kinds of awesome. You get to pick rotations that you want to do, and people know you're a fourth year and there isn't as much expected of you. But you have to do residency apps and Step 2, so that takes some time in the fall and winter. Also, acting internships (which is what I'm doing now) are pretty intense. But it's in something you like and want to apply in, and that makes it more enjoyable.

Research year (usually third or fourth year chronologically) is highly variable. I've had tons of free time while on research, but other people are working 80 hour weeks. Lately I've been spending a lot of my free time reading residency websites, because Wednesday is when ERAS opens. (ERAS = residency app system, analogous to AMCAS). But after this, I'm going to have a much easier schedule for the rest of this year. I'll keep doing some volunteering for admissions, and I'm taking ice skating lessons, which I've been doing for about a year. For the record, Myuu is still a lot better of a skater than I am, faceplants and all. 🙁

Another question, I saw on the MSAR that CW accepts online prereq's case by case, but didn't see data for CCLCM.. is that still true? I'm way worried about the biochem prereq right now...
Hey, stop posting more questions while I'm answering the previous ones!

I don't think it would be a good idea to take the core prereqs (bio, physics, gen chem, and orgo) online, but I know some people have done biochem online in the past. That is something you can talk to Dean Franco about when you get here. (See, now you have a great question to ask besides how she likes CCLCM. 😀)

Thanks! As my dad used to say about women (and yet was never my experience, strangely): "you're gonna have to keep 'em off with a stick." (don't take that dirty, he's a pastor lol)

That sounds not so bad at all! I really want to keep up with one (or more) of my "unique interests" during med school, so it matters to me that I have some free time during the week to do that in addition to the more typical stuff 🙂

BTW, read this quote on the website earlier this afternoon and it totally summarized what I like about CP:

"[the perfect place to] train physicians dedicated to ensuring the translation of scientific advances into clinical application."

Ice skating lessons sound awesome! I used to go ice skating pretty often when I was a kid and took a few lessons. What got you interested in it?

Well you've just stoked the fire of my extra curiosity into CCLCM haha! 😀 I love getting students' perspectives and I think it's sooo valuable that you are on here to help us out 👍👍

What a good point! I really hope they're okay with online when it comes to me... CP is quickly emerging as my #1 so far! It's actually also really good to know that other people have managed the same thing.

BTW, I am so tempted to scribble "SDN" on my nametag at interview haha.

Awww, but UP is so cool!😛 I'm glad CP is capturing your interest, though!

I'd tell you to scribble 'eggplant', but that'd come off as way less gunner and yet way more bizarre at the same time...

That'd be sweet, I might actually be down on the night of Sept 13! 😛

Oh don't get me wrong, I really like UP, as well, but CP is a little more along the lines of what I want 🙂

Hahaha, well, I don't think I'm a gunner, but I do feel like I'm a little bizarre, so eggplant it is... unfortunately, I think this may be a secret code word for hazing like sticking a big ol' "freshman" on my forehead

It might be hard if you want to do things like scuba dive in the Caribbean while you're in Cleveland, but yes, you definitely have time for other interests. Really the main crunch times for us since we don't have tests are the weeks when portfolios are due. There are four of those during first year, and if you're organized and start early like you're supposed to, it won't be all that big of a deal.

BTW, read this quote on the website earlier this afternoon and it totally summarized what I like about CP:

Was that one of the students? They're supposed to be updating those, because all of the people currently featured have already graduated. 😛

One of my friends was doing it and invited me.

I try to tell people the kind of stuff I wish I had known when I was applying.

You can if you want, but I'll know who you are anyway. They put your college on your badge along with your name. 🙂

UP is cool, and I have to say so because there are way more of them than there are of us. 😛

I'd tell you to scribble 'eggplant', but that'd come off as way less gunner and yet way more bizarre at the same time...
Automatic accept for anyone who does this. Especially if you explain what it means to Dean Franco.

No, it's an old holdover joke from last year's Case thread. It was the code word for the thread participants to find each other. The idea was to nonchalantly work the word "eggplant" into your normal conversation. One girl told me that she in fact did this while in the cafeteria. There was baba ganoush for sale, so she was able to be very slick about it. Unfortunately for her, no one recognized the signal. Or if they did recognize it, they didn't come forward.

Quick question: Can you be accepted to CP if you are rejected by UP? I thought I read somewhere that you had to be accepted by UP in order to be accepted by CP?

What is the magic word this year? 😛 I MUST meet CCLCMer and Myuu when I am there for the interview :biglove:

Quick question: Can you be accepted to CP if you are rejected by UP? I thought I read somewhere that you had to be accepted by UP in order to be accepted by CP?
Yes, you can be accepted by one program but not the other because the two adcomms for UP and CCLCM are basically independent. There are several people in my class who were accepted by CCLCM and rejected by the UP, some without even being interviewed by the UP. However, the UP adcomm does review the CCLCM adcomm's acceptances and rubber stamp them. Maybe that's what you had read.

One of last year's applicants came up with the eggplant idea-Myuu and I are just the messengers, not the brains behind this operation. So it's up to you to pick a new word if you don't want to continue with the eggplant tradition. When are you interviewing? I show up for interview days sporadically, but if you tell me when you're coming, I'll try to drop by that day.

BTW, no one told me if lunch and wrap-ups are still at the same times as last year. Will one of you invitees please check your interview day schedule and tell me if lunch is still at 11:30 and wrap-up at 3:45?

That'd be sweet, I might actually be down on the night of Sept 13!
Count me in, if there's rink time available. 😀

Oh don't get me wrong, I really like UP, as well, but CP is a little more along the lines of what I want
Ahh, ok. Perhaps visiting will change your mind a little.🙂

Hahaha, well, I don't think I'm a gunner, but I do feel like I'm a little bizarre, so eggplant it is... unfortunately, I think this may be a secret code word for hazing like sticking a big ol' "freshman" on my forehead
Nah, it's not hazing, just confusing for anyone who doesn't know.

It might be hard if you want to do things like scuba dive in the Caribbean while you're in Cleveland, but yes, you definitely have time for other interests. Really the main crunch times for us since we don't have tests are the weeks when portfolios are due. There are four of those during first year, and if you're organized and start early like you're supposed to, it won't be all that big of a deal.UP is cool, and I have to say so because there are way more of them than there are of us. 😛
You could, however, surf on Lake Erie, take up archery, go snowshoeing, learn to speed skate, trail run, join the roller derby...

Automatic accept for anyone who does this. Especially if you explain what it means to Dean Franco.
Sweet deal!😱

Dr. Mehta asked me what that was all about once.

I distinctly remember hearing a very loud "WHAT ARE YOU EATING FOR DINNER" "OH, SOMETHING SIMPLE, I THINK. MAYBE BABA GANOUSH" exchange going on behind me during a tour. vc77777777777777777 is such a character...

Ah, it's time to pick a new vegetable. Or fruit! Or matchbox toy!

It's true! There are (naturally) a ton of these people at my program too.

Haha...good times. Good times. So...Did you explain eggplants to Dr. Mehta?! I wanna know if you even attempted to explain it 😛!

[starting rumor]Speaking of eggplants, I heard that someone carved Case Western's logo into an eggplant and was given an automatic acceptance to both programs![/starting rumor]

And I challenge applicants to find the painting with an eggplant in it at the Cleveland Art Institute...Like an eggplant version of the DaVinci Code...

Boy, I've been too busy to check in often on SDN...but if anyone has yearning-burning questions about the first summer, I am in the thick of it right now! 🙂

What? No PBL video with the dramatic song in the background? 🙁

IIRC, first years are on break the first week of interviews.

Did you just tell me to go to the caribbean!!!? 🙁

😉

I was watching one of the informational videos on the site last night and they didn't explain super much about the portfolios either. How do you document this stuff?

Was that one of the students? They're supposed to be updating those, because all of the people currently featured have already graduated. 😛
Naw, it was some of the advertising material on the website.

I try to tell people the kind of stuff I wish I had known when I was applying.

The school is pretty good about working with people. Like I said, when you get here, you can talk to Dean Franco about it.
👍 Awesome!!

You can if you want, but I'll know who you are anyway. They put your college on your badge along with your name. 🙂

I always knew I had no anonymity on here. lol

Sweet, I'll chat with ya more about it when it's closer to interview time!

It just might!

I guess that's why I was confused. 😛
I think this year's word will be if someone asks you what you like to do, you say "food, sex, and sleep" (c/o 2015 reference)😉

Nice! I hear Ohio is pretty good when it comes to dance too (ohio state U mostly tho)

no veggie/fruit is awesome as an eggplant 🙁

So apparently I got rejected from Case last week but was never notified. You would think that they would at least email you if you got rejected...

I've yet to hear from this school (maybe my essays really sucked? or i'm just being impatient) but you all seem like a fun and crazy bunch. 🙂 I'd love to interview here just to try to incorporate eggplant into as many conversations as possible.

Im yet to hear back too. When were you complete? I was complete July 21st

so i realized today i now immediately associate "eggplant" with case.

i was at work and was talking with one of our administrators. she was telling me how her husband (i know both of them well) recently retired and has nothing to do except clean and finally learn how to cook (so now she's spoiled). she came home from the local farmers market and told him his task for the week was to figure out a way to cook..... eggplant! haha i guess he had no idea what an eggplant even looked like.

i was in shock during the conversation that here i was, actually having a legitimate conversation about eggplant

i hope i hear some (good) news from case soon!
