Sorry if I've missed a previous post, but would someone mind posting the essay prompts for the CW secondary prompts on this thread?

Thanks!

Did the secondary come out yet for Case Western/CCLCM?? This is like my dream school...ready to give out my liver for this one...>_<

Hey guys~

I don't think its out yet 🙁

I would recommend just going to the 09-10 thread and looking at the prompts there. I'm sure they haven't changed that much.

-L

PS: Oooooo TOP!~

Yes however - things are ramping up slowly in some regards. I am truly excited about all of my classmates - literally all of them are really well accomplished and socially adjusted.
I could drone on and on about how great things are...
Case had a big mixer last night (hey Myuu even got up on a chair again! 😱). It was great to meet many of my UP classmates too!
Agreed - our class is awesome! (Including you CCLCM ppl too 😛) They really DO attract and gather a really great group of students together.
I might just be genuinely the happiest I've ever been, now that it's starting to sink in that 1. I am actually IN med school (that thing I've spent countless years preparing/applying for) and 2. that I am at CASE (and I continue to be impressed daily by how much effort is going into getting our class oriented and into the swing of things!). There is a huge number of second year students who are giving tons of time out of their summer to give presentations and act as guides and preceptors and big siblings *fuzzies*

Oh and Myuu, did you really go into Panini's that night? The last I saw of you was on the sidewalk with a sub sandwich. I thought maybe it abducted you. Perhaps you shifted from shadow to shadow too well for me to find you. :ninja:

Is that app worth beans?

Okay good to know. Thanks vc777. Btw the University of Kansas thread is "winning" and we are in 3rd place 🙁
Not for long - as the M1s start settling in to the pace and into the Cleve in general, there will certainly be a few more of us that will inevitably gravitate back to our SDN addiction. 👍
Oh and once the secondaries come out, expect some rapid activity.

Case doesn't accept livers, at least not the last I checked, so instead write a really really good secondary (when it comes out) and put lotssssss of thought into it!

A question came up before (or was it a PM? either way) don't blow off the research prompt question (if prompts are the same as last year) even if you feel like your research wasn't snazzy enough to make an impression. My undergrad research wasn't particularly impressive compared to most of my classmates - I wrote about what it meant to me, about being mentored by my professor. Tap into whatever was important about it to you. It's a chance to tell them more about who you are and why you're exceptionally awesome.

Haha, everyone did kind of fall off the face of the earth a little. 😳

I'm going to be kind of busy for the next few months, but I can still answer questions about CCLCM and clinical rotations for both programs if anyone has any. However, this offer ONLY extends to school questions that a current fifth year student would be able to know the answer to, which does NOT include when the secondary will come out or what the questions will be. 😛

Oh, before I forget, are any of the eggplant crew interested in going to see Bodies while it's here in Cleveland? I saw it once before, but it was in 2005 before I even started med school. It would be kind of cool to see it again now that I'm almost done with med school, and plus, it would let me meet all the new UP students. I don't think I know any of you guys yet.

I need to remember to see Bodies while it is in Cleveland. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

Question about the research prompt --
I should probably use a completed research project (one that is going out to publication) vs my current research work for my masters, correct? They seem to want you to write about your results/conclusions and what you learned from a past experience... vs a current one.

I'm just worried that my paper going out to publication isn't too interesting (though I did learn a BIG lesson when writing it, which was that I tried to manipulate the data to make my PI happy... which is a big-no-no... but I wanted him to be happy. It turned out OK though). That, and I don't want CWRU to wonder why I didn't talk about my current research project -- i do have some results -- but consider I am still in this "experience" I just don't know if I should write about it (though I have cool data, teamwork, and leadership all from this experience).

I know this doesn't give you much info... but any thoughts would be apprecaited.

just got the secondary! It has cool audio instructions. 🙂

And yay just got an invite to complete the secondary!

Same questions as last year.

there's also a new question asking about how you work in small group settings. they really emphasize small group and PBL at case

Secondary received, now I just need to get to work on it I guess.
Edit: So far I am very impressed with the secondary.

I want it, I want it!! Where are you 2ndary?

They asked that question last year -- though it is slightly different with two scenerios (but i thought that was only required if applying to the Clinic). I currently can't access the secondary so someone can put the questions up later.

I love them asking if I am interested in all these other dual programs. It makes me interested. haha

I clicked bioethics and public health -- don't know if I should do that though....

i can't get in to the app either. it's prob an overflow of all us crazy premed people trying to access it

is anyone having issues logging on to the case secondary, it keeps sayings there is some kind of server error in "/" application

Same problem, I can not log in either. It seems like a system-wide error.

Must be overloaded now. When I first got their secondary I was able to go in and change my password but now it isn't working. I'm just going to wait a couple of days before trying it again.

Alright the Case thread is getting traffic 🙂

Case is a great school. Good luck everybody! I am one of the many enthused M1s. Let's see if you guys can beat the post record we set with our thread last cycle...

Yay!! So excited that I got the secondary for Case...but a little sad that I can't access it either lol..oh well i can wait 😀

I was going to bring that up - I think it'd be really fun to go as a group, and I've been wanting to see it for a long time. Student discount = yay. Anyone else up for going?
Oh, and I ate eggplant today! :3

Yup, I can't get in either. Damn, and here I was trying to get this started off early.

Application has a server error for me as well - I was really hoping to get this one done quickly too, CCLCM is far and away my dream program... Hope the server issue gets resolved soon.

Just tried logging in again. It works! w00t. Good luck everyone.

Maybe talk about both of them at least briefly. I seem to remember that there was a pretty good amount of space for this essay. But if you feel like you can only discuss one because there isn't enough room, then I would pick whichever one you asked the PI to write you a LOR for. If you got both PIs to write LORs, well, I guess you should flip a coin. 😛

No, but seriously, I think you should describe them both briefly if possible, since it sounds like they were both significant.

We need to double-check when it ends, but I won't be available until early Sept. I know you guys are all in classes, so maybe we can go on a Saturday. Hopefully you first years can school me in all the anatomy I forgot. :meanie: 😛

Thanks for the feedback! I have LORs from both the PIs... so its either flip a coin or talk about both....

so after submitting my application this morning, I went back to look at it on the iapply website, and my third essay is not there! The first two essays appear on the page, but for the third one there is just a gray box with no text. I am 100% positive I saved it before submitting.

However, on the confirmation page when I click "print application", the third essay does show up there.

Anyone else have this problem?

Does CW screen applications? MSAR says no, but I haven't gotten the secondary yet. Did I just get screened out or do they send them in batches or something else?

I checked and that's a bug that other people have had. Rest assured, your application is fine.👍

We do not screen, but we do send them out in batches.:luck:

Welcome new members to iApply, it will be the bane of your existence.

Anyone know how long the first essay should be? Right now I'm closing in on 500-600ish words and would hate to find out later that this one should be limited to half of that... Thanks!

Would it be too much trouble for one of you with access to the secondary to update ksmi117 with questions for both UP and CP so the thread can be up to date?

I'll do it later today if someone messages me the prompts.👍

I don't think it matters too much if you go over the limit a little bit, as it states:

Please limit your response to 1 page (about 3,500 characters), and leave a blank line between paragraphs. If the 3,500 character recommendation is exceeded, your essay WILL be saved in it's entirety.

500 words is about 3000-3500 characters, so I think you will be fine!

I find it hard to directly answer the question "please add your thoughts about why this research experience has motivated you to consider a career as a physician investigator". I mean, I like to do research as a student, but I don't seriously consider a career as a full-time researcher. It seems to me that this should be the question for MSTP or at least the College Program. And thoughts? Besides, do most graduate of College Program go into academics rather than clinical medicine?

So- I actually don't have access to iapply... so don't quote me... but are you SUREEE this question isn't for MSTP???

It doesn't sound like a question they would ask for MD ...

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place but I am applying MD only and the one about research says "Describe your experience, including the question you pursued and how you approached it, your results and interpretation of the results, and most importantly, any thoughts about what this experience meant to you"

So I am not sure where that other one is from.

Yes- that one sounds correct 🙂

Good luck guys!

Alright okay that question seems to be for the college program. I selected both university and college programs, and it's different from if you just select university program. But still, honestly, the most attractive part of college program is that they cover your tuition.

Do most graduate of College Program go into academia rather than clinical medicine???

I'm working on the "overcoming adversity" question. I wanted to talk about overcoming my eating disorder, but I was afraid that it may be too personal for a med school application. Would the admissions committee weigh this disorder against me because it is partially a mental health problem?

Thank you!!

Considering they recently just graduated their first class (i believe), I don't think you can say quite yet where the graduates end up.

I hope to get into this program as i plan on doing a mixture of research and clinical medicine, and I think this program would be excellent for that. As a physician-researcher though, you don't need to be in the lab all the time... just directing others.. so that gives you time to meet with patients, do surgeries, ect.

In that case, I would definitely try to fit them both in if you can.

That isn't such a great reason to choose CCLCM, especially when you consider the lost opportunity cost of spending an extra year in school, and the fact that you have to spend a lot of time involved in research and research activities while you're here. If you're not a person who really likes learning about and participating in research, you're not going to be very happy at this school.

Do most graduate of College Program go into academia rather than clinical medicine???
That is the goal and mission of the program. Again, if an academic career isn't at least potentially in your future plans, CCLCM probably wouldn't be the greatest fit for you.

Second class. I'm in the third class and will graduate in May. 🙂

The vast majority of surgeons do clinical research (like outcomes), but yeah, if you were going to try to run a basic science lab, you'd almost certainly need to hire someone to run it for you. I know of one surgeon here who does that.
