Smday or whoever, what's EVMS's waitlist movement like? I noticed you and some others are on the Top 1/3 which is awesome!

no movement as of yet, to the best of my knowledge... hopefully it'll start in a couple of weeks or so:xf:

Now, something that is helpful and useful for me may be totally pointless to others. Obviously, those who find it useless need not bother reading the list or posting in it... I has been moved back to the waitlist thread though to not interfere with any other convos others may wish to have on this thread 😀

save time for what? the admissions committee will know if you are getting in or not. If anyone is concerned so much about their chances, call the admissions office. nobody on here is qualified to make that assessment. I appreciate moving it off of here. Not bothering to read the posts isn't the point, but as those of us who start getting accepted from the waitlist try and catch up to others who are matriculating, separating the wheat from the chaff will be difficult with all the others trying to game the system and hypothesize what position in which third they are (literally a guessing game, and if you are running algorithms, you have way too much time on your hands). That was only my point, is that in the end, it is truly pointless and a negative thought process for anyone on the waitlist.

... but as those of us who start getting accepted from the waitlist try and catch up to others who are matriculating, separating the wheat from the chaff will be difficult ...

That's what your class FB page is for, buddy.

... with all the others trying to game the system and hypothesize what position in which third they are (literally a guessing game, and if you are running algorithms, you have way too much time on your hands).

That's one of the basic and most important uses of SDN for pre-meds at this stage in the game.

I'm not trying to be cynical or confrontational, but let's be realistic with this whole process. I REALLY want to get into EVMS, but honestly, all I can do is patiently wait on their decision and work with the admissions office.

hmmm, i see. good point. didn't think of this as a support network. I like the waitlist thread though, and thinks it helps keep things a bit more organized. I didn't know that med schools classes solely operate outside of SDN on FB. Seems like a listserv could possibly be more effective, especially for those that don't frequent FB for a variety of reasons, buddy.

Like i said, its obvious that having a list of people waitlisted and when they are accepted isn't going to change anyone's chances of getting in... and its not a matter of guessing what our chances or positions are either... many people are simply curios to see how others, who are in the same boat as them, do as the waitlist takes off. Isn't that the point of sdn? and it seems to me that having organized info will be even more helpful for those of us who get accepted off the waitlist and want to be connected to classmates who have also been accepted since we wont have to go back 5 pages to see if a person was accepted after all or no...

This is getting a bit too confrontational for my taste... The waitlist talk has been voluntarily moved to a different thread, so let's get back to the friendly conversation, shall we?

So where is everyone planning to live next year?

Any other HPSP students?

I've heard of good/cheap apartments that EVMS subsidizes or owns within walking distance for about $650 a month for a single bedroom. I'll probably live within walking distance and save some mula. If not there, somewhere in the Ghent area. I like that area, close to a bunch of gyms and school and restaurants/grocery stores and minimal traffic.

HPSP package complete, goes to board next month (missed this month's), should have approval letter right in time for the waitlist to start moving. Prior service and no physical hang-ups, I don't see an issue with it at all, just a matter of waiting (on top of waiting).

Anyone that sent an LOI email to Dr. Solhaug get a response from him? if so, how long, etc.

Postings from previous years have given me insight into where I should apply, and now have given me necessary info I may use to plan for next year. If the postings do nothing else, they archive data for future classes. It also helps mitigate the anxiety for me! Peace be to all, especially to us sdners!

I was looking at living in Ghent, but I have a husband and a dog, so we need a yard.... We're looking at houses in some other areas of norfolk, Hampton, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Does anyone have any insight?

What's the parking situation on campus? I couldn't find anything online about student parking fees, availability, etc.

And good luck to surfernuke!

Did you look at Ghent Village Apartments? They are arranged in kinda a big square, so there is a nice communal, open, grassy area in the middle of the apartments, with a gazebo and stuff. They are really pet friendly. If you wanted your very own fenced in yard, you wouldn't like this place, but if you just needed a large grassy area to walk your dog, it would be perfect. The 1 bedrooms are $1245/month and 2 bedrooms are $1545. It's less than a mile from EVMS, probably about a 20 min walk.

Also, some general advice I've heard time and time again: don't live anywhere in which you would have to cross a bridge to get to your work or school. Unless you want a super long and slow commute.

I'm on the waitlist but did some extensive wishful-thinking-future apartment shopping in Norfolk. If you want any more info, let me know.

We're actually planning to buy a house. Our mortgage payment on a $135,000 house will be under $900/month. That's why we will probably not be able to live in Ghent - the houses there are out of our price range. Now we're just trying to figure out if there are any major differences between living in Norfolk, VA Beach, Hampton and Chesapeake. We're from California, so we're used to 30-minute daily commutes.

That's not, of course, a knock on people who choose to rent. Renting makes sense for a lot of people, just not for us.

Traffic. If you are living in Hampton, you will have to contend with the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel or with Mid-Town tunnel. These are not very attractive options and can really become a pain in the butt.

I live here in Norfolk, PM me if you want any more info

Bluebird,

Used to live in the area and still have several friends that do. You will not be able to find a house in a non ghetto area for $135,000. Real Estate prices be crazy in Hampton Roads.

That's really interesting to hear. Our realtor seemed confident that he could find us something in a nice, safe area in that price range, since we are willing to commute 30 minutes one-way to work.

Hey Bluebird, I lived in Va Beach for the past 10 years, own my house for the last 5 years. That price range is very unrealistic. You could find a place further out, but that could be problematic with traffic on the bridges and tunnels. I would caution you to pay close attention to location and the commute. Also, there are a lot of forclosures inthe area, they can be cheap up front, but cost you in the long haul

We will definitely be keeping a very close eye on commute distances. That's why I brought it up here! Lucky for us, the housing market has changed a lot in the past few years. Our realtor told us that a few years ago, we wouldn't have been able to buy a house in a good neighborhood for that price. Now he said that due to the decline in the housing market, we should be able to get something acceptable in our price range. All we need is a little 2bed/1bath bungalow with a yard for the dog. VA loans require very strict inspections, so foreclosures and short sales are often not an option.

We have a lot of faith in our realtor when it comes to finding a nice home in a nice neighborhood, and I will be flying out to look at houses next month. I was really hoping more for information like...

- Traffic going North to Hampton sucks - don't live anywhere that will require you to go over that bridge
- Are there other areas that are particularly bad?
- What gives me the easiest access to the campus and the hospitals?
- Since 3rd/4th year rotations take place all over Hampton Roads, how concerned should I even be about proximity to EVMS?

I am definitely curious about the commute, since I won't have the opportunity to "test drive" my commute to school during my visit.

Well traffic sucks around any bridge or tunnel. There's the high rise bridge, the mid town tunnel, the down town tunnel, the hampton roads bridge tunnel, the monitor marimac bridge tunnel (those are just the major ones). All of those are bad in the afternoon. The morning comute is worse going towards any of the military bases starting around 6:30. The areas around EVMS in Norfolk would obviously be best, but they are expensive or not nice areas. Virginia beach and Chesapeake have good areas that are less expensive, looking at 20 min commute with no traffic, 45-60 mins during rush hours. I wouldn't factor in the different locations for rotations since they are all around the area, but only for several weeks at a time. Portsmouth has some decent areas, but you'll need to research them. You'd also be forced to use a tunnel to get in to Norfolk

Wow, that's a lot of tunnels... Somehow I didn't see all of those on the map...

Has everyone submitted their financial aid and scholarship forms already?? We do this even if on waitlist right? also, have you guys been writing essays for the questions or paragraph answers... and what would be considered "special circumstances" for the last question on the Fin Aid form? I just need a little feedback from current students (or anyone else) as I don't know how EVMS looks at these.

Thanks

There are more forms besides FAFSA??

It is not due on Friday if you are on the waitlist, according to the below linked website. Seems that when you are accepted, they will give you a due date.

Wow, that's a lot of tunnels... Somehow I didn't see all of those on the map...

Yes, the tunnels are a beast! I come from a busy city and am used to traffic, but the tunnels are somehow so much worse because there is no alternate route... However, I do have some friends who live in Chesapeake, Suffolk, and VB (which is not quite as bad as the tunnels), and they commute in to school early and then study at school until after rush hour. Our classes also start at 9 am, so sometimes you can miss traffic... but more importantly, attendance is optional and the lectures are recorded, so many people aren't in a rush to make it to class in the morning (that changes in 2nd year, though, when one class is mandatory).

Our LGMs (clinical experience in 1st and 2nd yrs, the location for which you can select) and rotations (whose location you can't really select) can be anywhere from Norfolk to VB to Williamsburg to Chesapeake. Some of the prime rotations are at EVMS, however, so I would still try to keep proximity high on your list.

We have a free student parking garage that most people use, or you can find open parking on the street several blocks away. Parking isn't really a problem here. 🙂

has anyone heard about scholarship offers being sent out yet, or when they are planning to send them out?

Got my acceptance letter today! Here are my stats for those who are still waiting:
I/S, 28M, cGPA 3.6, sGPA 3.3, URM, non-traditional student
interviewed: 10/1
waitlisted top 1/3
letters of interest sent in January and March, additional LOR sent in April
Good luck to all who are still waiting!

P.S. I saw in the thread that the April 15th financial aid form deadline didn't apply to wait list applicants...does that refer to the FAFSA as well? The website makes it sound like waitlisted people had to turn that in by the 15th too. I'm a little confused.

That is great news, congrats. I'm O/S, 31R, 3.96 c/sGPA, M.S. with publications and LOI already sent, interviewd 3/16, still waitlisted top 1/3. Thanks for the post, looks like things are moving now on the waitlist.

I submitted my FAFSA with the school code before the 15th even though waitlisted, but i think you'll be okay.

talked to the office, they said scholarships and financial aid will be distributed in late June/early July...why do they do it so late? it doesn't make any sense

Does anyone know what the MAIN admissions office email address is for EVMS? I see specific email addresses for different people on the website, but I'm not sure which one to use...this would be in reference to an interest letter.

Thanks!

Congratulations! 😀

I guess the waitlist is officially moving! Called again, top third, OOS.

withdrew acceptance, got into my state school which is cheaper. Hopefully one of you guys get my spot. Good luck!

Congrats on the acceptance!!

you mentioned sending and additional LOR... was it by someone who had already recommended you in your initial application?? I am thinking of asking my PI to send in another letter but not sure if it will be at all helpful since he was already one of my letter writers. anyone have any ideas about this?

so I take it they accept people off of the waitlist via letter in mail? other schools give a call or email, just wondering so i can stop obsessively checking my email.

Hi everyone! I'm deciding between schools, and I have a quick question:

Does anyone remember if there is advanced technology in the anatomy lab (or if it is going to be updated along with the new building)? I'm pretty sure the lab will stay in Lewis Hall...I just can't remember if there are large screen computers ect in the lab.

Thanks and good luck to all!

I remember that the anatomy lab was going to be updated and moved into the new building, but I don't recall what the plans were in regard to computers in the labs.

Congrats AsanteSana and CshantyW!! These new acceptances are getting me all antsy. Can't wait until the waitlist starts moving full speed

Hi everyone,

Today I was accepted off the bottom 1/3 of the waitlist. I hope this is encouraging for everyone on the waitlist. I'm IS female. Good luck everyone!!

actually, now i'm just confused, but that is encouraging. congrats. written acceptance or email or phone call>?

Anatomy lab stays in Lewis Hall. There are plasma TVs hooked up a central computer / camera.

Thanks. I called today. The committee had just met and made the decision. I sent updates, a LOI and spoke with Dr. Solhaug.

cool! how would one go about speaking with Dr. Solhaug? Did they mention the primary means of notification? my wife has started to obsessively checking the mail, so between that and my email habit, we've got it covered, lol.

Thanks phantomx87. One more question: I've heard rumors that they are revamping class times from ~ 9AM to 4PM to something more like 9-1PM. Is this true?

No freaking clue. I know that the curriculum committee is meeting with my class to get input on how to change your schedule... You guys should have a lot less stress when it comes to exam scheduling than we do now.

(7 exams in the next 3 weeks, 4 in the final 10 days of the semester)

Hey guys. So it looks like I will be going here next year. Does anyone know anything about the roommate/living situation? Is there a list somewhere of first-years who would be interested in finding an apartment/town house?

Definitely congratulations!!

But it's actually very confusing, not exactly encouraging (no offense!). Does ranking on the waitlist not matter, I guess? Do they take people off of the waitlist indiscriminately?
