Hey, did any of you do the one year Masters program at IUPUI?
Any thoughts on how adcoms will value it?

I am currently in a one year biology masters program at IUPUI as well and was wondering the same thing. I know last year, I heard that a lot of people who did well in the masters program during their fall semester were accepted by this time in the application cycle...however, I have heard that this year the adcom might be waiting until second semester grades to come out before making any decisions. I am not positive though...has anyone who is currently in a one year masters program this year received an acceptance from IUSM yet?

As to the specifics you ask about regarding admissions, that is a hard question to ask people who aren't on the admissions committee. What i've been told throughout my process (i'm a non-traditional applicant), is that an extra degree not only adds credentials, but can be a nice grade booster as well. I did a 2 year M.S. with original research and am working on my third first author publication. My feeling is that a way to break out of the pack (it sounds like this 1-year masters is somewhat common?), is to get involved in research, but not just to be some professor's workhorse. You'd need to lead a project yourself, design experiments, and have original publishable research (and yes, go through the painful publication submission process). Having unique clinical volunteering experience also helps considerably. Diversification of your application!! That is key to breaking out from the pack. I paid a pretty penny hiring a private med school guidance counselor, and all this advice helped streamline my admissions process so I was admitted sooner than later. Good luck.

HOPEFULLY in a week I'll be celebrating as a letter from Indy arrives in the mailbox.

I heard through the grapevine (not a dependable grapevine, a rumor one) that March decisions are continuous, and you can hear at any time (as opposed to on the 17th or so). Has anyone heard this?

Same here btricycle!! The post office played a mean trick on me last month. I had a key in my mailbox around the 19th which meant I received something too big to fit in my box. My heart was pounding so hard during my drive to the bigger post boxes! I opened the box up and there it was, a big white envelope! But, as I eagerly pulled it out of the box and grasped what I thought to be my golden ticket to IU, I realized that it was my diploma from my undergrad university! What a bummer!! Here's to next month 🙂

And indianachelsey, I'm definitely going for the Fort Wayne campus if I get accepted...no...WHEN I get accepted. Haha.

I'm with both you and btricycle... praying that next week holds great news! Are you from the FW area? Maybe we will be getting to know each other this fall (let's hope, at least! 🙂)

good luck everyone, this was my 3rd year of applying, so i know how exhausting the wait can be.

My grandfather was put in the hospital over the weekend with a pelvic abscess which has also led to respiratory problems and transporting him around has caused falling O2 sats, but they've managed to somewhat stabilize that. Currently they're trying to thicken his blood to see if surgery is even possible.

Any thoughts/prayers/whatever you do would be appreciated!

on a lighter note, ALL OF YOU should check out this video, titled "This is Indiana"

I'm sorry to hear that. I will keep him in my prayers, keep us updated on his recovery 🙂. (And thx for the video!)

Thanks doctorhope. He passed earlier this afternoon. He was put on a ventilator this morning due to fluid buildup in the lungs. Sepsis was rampant from the abscess. Gonna be a rough week....

RIP Pap

btricycle, sincere condolences to you and your family. I know to say, "be strong" is easier said than done. So, I hope God gives you peace during this tumultuous time.

So I received an email this morning congratulating me on my acceptance to IUSM - Yay! I'm definitely feeling the love now. But, I am not invited to the Second Look Program because my acceptance decision came late - too bad!

Im really sorry for your lose. I offer my condolences.

Not yet, but I was told to expect it later this week or next week. I think the email came through the minority office...but not sure.

Yeah, I think it did come through the minority office. I got one today. Congrats! Hope to see ya in august!

I'm from Indiana just an hour away from the medical school

Congratulations futuredoc. Could you possibly share your stats with us? I interviewed with IU way back in November and am just curious to see where I stand at this point since they review applications based upon a composite score of one's mcat, gpa, and interview results. IU is my number one school and I'm really really really hoping to hear some good news this month (or at least something other than a rejection).

Oh wow you interviewed in September that's quite the wait. Thanks for responding and I wish you the best of luck next year in medical school 🙂.

well crap. now i'm worried since futuredoc, 1 hour from indy, already got his letter today. that means they've already gone out. i'm 2 hours from indy, so i'm figuring that if i was gonna get a letter this month it would have came today. now i'm bummed...

This exercise in "sharing stats" is futile at best. Only the admissions committee knows whether or not you will fit in. Remember, there is an interview as well. I had some guy doing C-3PO imitations during the whole admissions day at my last interview, and he had great stats (was more than willing to share with us).

Too many factors, and none of us are qualified (including ourselves) to judge our own competitiveness on medical school. Good luck to all, but posting stats will only drive yourself (and others) freaking crazy.

Anybody heard about the campus assignments yet??? Still waiting, got SB as #1.

I have some good news for anyone with a poor undergrad GPA who is considering the Pre-Professional Master's program at IUPUI. I wasn't accepted the first time I applied; interviewed in October 2009 and got the rejection email in the last week of April 2010. I had: lots of volunteer experience and shadowing, 30R, 3.35 overall undergrad and 3.3ish science undergrad GPA.

My GPA from the first semester at IUPUI was 3.94, I interviewed in January, and got my acceptance letter yesterday. The PPM is tough, but worth it!

I interviewed at the beginning of January, and I still haven't heard any news. (thankful for the no news is good news) I'm obviously PRAYING I will get my acceptance letter next month, but I looked into the PPM after reading your post; it sounds interesting and very much like something I would want to do if not accepted this year. It's now my number 1 choice if I don't get accepted -- to do PPM and reapply next year. So thank you 🙂

Just declined my acceptance. I wish everyone the best of luck that's still waiting for that acceptance letter!

For those of you fresh out of college, getting rejected first time around is NOT a bad thing. I think there are too many docs with no real life experience outside of school, but there is your opportunity to do something cool, like an MS, or travel, or volunteer abroad. Plenty of opportunities and places to go. I took a 8 year detour to drive nuclear submarines around the world and surf in Hawaii. Pretty happy about it, but would have rather spent less time away from the classroom. Keep your respective chins up, if you want to be a doctor, you will be a doctor, it is a matter of when, not if.

but yeah, the application process sucks and is nerve wracking. good luck.

Another chance I get a letter just opened up. Best wishes on your future successes!

Does anyone know if the letters will continue to go out on the 15th of every month or does it change starting in April?

Hey, has anyone heard if there have been some recruitment scholarship offers given out? I heard they're given before May 15th, but I'm curious as to how soon before then.

Huh? Wuz dat?

Huh? Wuz dat?

IU requires you to turn in your school packet for financial aid by May 31. They then process this and give out need-based scholarships and such in June. However, they give out recruitment scholarships before May 15 to try to entice people to attend their medical school.

Gave up my spot at IU. Hope some other deserving candidate gets it. Good luck to everyone still waiting.

I just asked about this. Apparently there were about 30 recruitment scholarships and they have already been given out.
