To reiterate what's been said earlier...

CALL THEM!

I submitted my my secondary on 7/30, but have been waiting to be considered complete. I just called them (and some RUDE lady answered) and-lickity split-now I am confirmed.

Hahaha, I submitted on 7/29 and was complete on 8/11 without calling. Why everyone feels the need to call the admissions office in August is beyond me.

they must be really behind. I submitted 7/30, and my LOR's still have not been uploaded...

Hey guys,

I am a current first year at NYMC and if you guys have any questions about the NYMC app cycle or what its been like here thus far send me a message. Good luck!

what's it like so far? heh....

Area? facilities? student dynamic?

I'm OOS so I'm not familiar with the area.

I am from out of state too and had never been to the NY area besides my interview. I was a little worried about the area of Valhalla because it is about a 5 min drive from the nightlife, but there has been no problems thus far going out and having a good time when we aren't studying.

A lot of people have cars here so getting around is very easy as well. The student dynamic has been pretty awesome as well. We are on a H, HP, P F grading scale in which as many people as possible can honors. This takes the competition out between us and we have all been working together in lecture and during labs. The second year students put a ton of resources together for us as well to help consolidate the info and concentrate our studying. NYMC also has a pretty nice community feel for it too considering a lot of students live on campus in the apartments.

From all of the interviews I went on, the facilities were comparable to other schools. Nice large lecture halls, lots of study spaces and a very nice anatomy lab.

Hi, guys, question
My premed advisor wrote a committee letter AND put the comittee letter as part of my package with 4 individual letters...
Eh.. is this a committee letter or should I fill in names?
Thanks.

Also, what is a FAP stub? Is it the FAP approval email they sent to me?
Most schools just want a print out

I just put my college's name down on the secondary and that's it, since there IS an actual committee letter.

My LORs were accepted within a few days as well, so no worries. 🙂

Hey guys, another first year here to answer questions. Right now we're currently preparing for an exam on Monday. I have to say in the 2 weeks that I've been here, the 2nd years have been incredibly helpful in sharing tips and materials for upcoming exams and just advice in general. So far, I am very happy with my decision to come here

Got an interview invite this morning, so check your e-mail.

Interview Invite this morning as well!

Complete 7/29, interview late September.

finally got my letters received yesterday after a few weeks.. does being complete weeks later like this make me look bad? haha

Congrats to those with interview invites.

I was complete on 8/3 so hopefully ill hear soonish

do u think a reapplicant who got an interview invite to this school and was waitlisted will likely get another interview invite?

did you do anything to better your app?

i did but there wasn't much room for me to update them. maybe this requires that i send them an additional email updating them on my activities. i couldn't add much to my AMCAS app cuz i've had a lot of really good experiences...

Maybe shoot them an email and tell them about it and mention how much you enjoyed the interview here and look forward to the opportunity of interview again etc. etc.

sounds great! thanks for the advice.

yay- second interview! 🙂

September 20th! I really love this school so maybe good things soon!

How many applicants do they interview- how soon do they get back to applicants?

last year they got 12000 applications and interviewed somewhere around 1200 people. They interview Mon-Thurs and apx 60 people a week. I think I heard about my acceptance around 8-10 weeks after?

Just got this secondary today. Just to be clear about the LOR

You need...

- 2 LOR from science professors
- 1 LOR from non-science professor
- Optional 2 letters

right?

How long did it take most people to be considered complete after having the secondary in? Submitted on the 9th and still doesn't show my letters. I am guessing this is normal and they are backed up.

i submitted mine on jul 29/30th and got my letters marked as received on 8/23..

How do we know if they have received our secondary application? I filled that thing out back in August 11th, but I have no idea if their website, oddly shady looking, has forwarded it to their office. On the Status page, this is what they have under Secondary application status:

------
Secondary Application Information

This section is to confirm receipt of your (Requested Secondary, Payment Received & Verified Amcas Application)

Your verified AMCAS application was received.
A unique Login ID and Password to complete your secondary application were sent to you via e-mail on 08/11/2010.
Your application fee, or fee waiver request, was received on 08/12/2010.
-----

I think I also filled out the secondary twice by accident via irregular internet browser reaction etc.

Hi every1,
I have a stupid question. When I assigned the list of Med schools in AMCAS form they charge some money for every school. Why NYMC asks for another payment?

Every school does - get used to it

The fee you paid to AMCAS is for them to process/send out your application. The NYMC fee is for the school to process/evaluate your application. Every school does this unless you have a fee waiver from AMCAS.

Yep. Get ready to max out your credit cards for a while.... Sigh.

Can the current students tell me any downsides to the school (not the location)? There was a not very happy camper a few pages back and I was wondering if there is any truth to that.

I don't know what the unhappy camper said, but I personally haven't found to many downsides to the school yet. The only thing that has bothered me thus far is the limited time the cafe is opened. I guess I do feel that we are in class a ton ( anywhere between 4-7 hours a day) but I bet that is pretty typical across the nation. Take my word with a grain of salt though considering I have only been here for 3 and a half weeks.

The classes are well put together with a lot of clinical correlation content to them. We also have radiology and clinical medicine courses atleast once a week to tie in the clinical stuff with what we are covering in lecture.

I also don't think the location is too bad. Campus has everything you need really (atleast for me), and we are a short cab to any of the night life areas around Valhalla (white plains, tarrytown etc). Large groups of students have also gone down to the city every weekend thus far too.

NYMC emailed me today, asking me to call them in regards to my LORs. I initially panicked and thought "O noes! One of my profs wrote terrible things about me!" :scared:

But they just wanted to clarify which letters out of my packet I wanted them to use 🙂

LOVED the Brooklyn accent of the guy on the phone. 👍

hmmm, I was completed at NYMC on Aug.02 as well , no reponse yet. My MCAT at the time was 34R but re-wrote it and got a result of 36R on Aug.10. Is it advisable to update them through email with the new score(not sure if they know or will check the score automatically, I did indicate that I have a new set of score coming on AMCAS)? Would that help my chances for an interview? My GPA is 3.98.

Patience is a virtue, buddy~! Enjoy the wait....

Thanks, but granted there are far more anxious persons than me on this forum🙂

I'm unsure if they will get automatically updated with the MCAT, anybody has any idea?

I dont know for sure, buy my guess is that it will automatically get updated next time they download apps.. I may be wrong though

Another first year here. Long time reader of this thread, first time responder.

From the questions I've read about the apps and the process, my general advice is to be patient. NYMC does receive well over 10,000 apps and have over 1,000 interviews. The logistics for that are immense for the admissions committee, the admissions office, and even the current students who provide tours and overnight accommodations. So, it takes the admissions staff some time. Since some people have already gotten interviews, you know that the office isn't dead. If you have questions or concerns, I'd suggest emailing the office. This school is rather big on emailing.

As for the school and the student body, they work like a well oiled machine. The Step 1 passing rate has been consistently high in the up 90s. The curriculum is well planned, gives you a run for your money, and exposes you to clinical applications and scenarios. The anatomy lab is pretty much awesome. It's open 24/7 and has a wide variety of body types, so you get get a lot of different views. As for clinical exposure, 1st years are paired up with a primary care preceptor for the year to learn and practice basic clinical skills like hearing heart sounds, taking histories, etc. Plus, there's a student run clinic in the city where you can volunteer. And, if you're looking into radiology, the radiology department warmly welcomes shadowing even if it's an hour or two whenever you can squeeze in the time (not sure about the other departments because they haven't made quite a huge plug to us 1st years).

In terms of academic assistance, all the audio of lectures are recorded and a good number of video too (depending on the discretion of the lecturer). There is a student run scribes program that literally scribe all the lectures into downloadable Word documents. Also, the upperclassmen are very helpful. They send out past study guides and websites and even hold review sessions and practice practicals.

I find the location to be quite good. Close enough to the city without the distraction throughout the week, but a short train ride to NYC's nightlife during the weekend. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students go out together in bunches during the weekends (haven't met that many 4th years, so can't say about them). If you're not into the hustle and bustle of the city, Westchester County and adjacent counties have a good number of parks and outdoor sights to visit. There are local bars, restaurants, and shops in nearby White Plains, Tarrytown, and Sleepy Hollow.

As for student activities, there is a good number of student clubs - professional, athletic, and special interests. Students here work hard and play hard.

The few downsides are that the gym is rather small (but suffices the purpose) and there aren't as large and convenient ammenities as those that you find with a med school that's a part of a larger university institution (like, large fields for sports, a cafeteria with longer hours, and maybe friendlier crosswalks). I personally feel that lecture hours are a bit long with sometimes 3 lectures plus a lab in one day. It may sound that 3 lectures in one day isn't much, but at a med school pace, the basic material and details do pile up quite quickly. The downsides are just my opinions and based on my preferences. Definitely nothing against the school, so take them with a grain a salt.

All of this is just based on my limited experience here so far. Pretty much the same thing as what Depumcrc has said.

^^^Thank you!

Sounds like a great school, and I have heard other great things about their anatomy lab.

👍

The only thing I would add is, as far as large fields go, there is a baseball & soccer field on the hospital grounds. I'm pretty sure some of the clubs use them. You just need to walk past the big student parking lot, cross over the highway, and it will be on your left.

If I could improve one thing about the school, it would be to have the library open until 2am instead of midnight. But I guess that's what the mods are for.

A little extra info for the applicants: there is a a 24 hour cafe in the adult hospital, and a nicer one in the children's hospital that has much shorter hours. The NYMC cafeteria itself is open all the time BUT they don't serve food after about 3pm. After that, there's a student fridge, some microwaves, and vending machines with sandwiches, soup, coffee, etc.

Just finally submitted AMCAS to NYMC (had to wait for finances to come through so I could afford this oh-so expensive process lol!!). Any idea how long it'll take to receive a secondary? I'm on the edge of my seat now!

A day or two after you submit your amcas.

BTW, for FAP recipients, I called them about what they wanted mailed... the rude(must've been the same one who one of the other posters were referring to) lady who I spoke to on the phone said I could just forward them the email I got from AAMC.

I was wondering if anyone received the secondary before your AMCAS application was verified? Should I wait to send the secondary until it is verified?

NYMC website: Upon receipt of the AMCAS applicant information, New York Medical College will email a login and password to access the secondary online application.

aka you need to wait to be verified. The secondary is basically just paying them to read your primary application... so there's really no point to want the secondary before being verified.

Sorry I just re-read what I wrote and I should have written it better. I received my secondary but my AMCAS hasn't been verified. It seemed strange to me so I was wondering if it had happened to anyone else?

Maybe your answer still fits though. Why turn in the secondary if I haven't been verified yet?

Some schools send you secondaries before you are verified. If you pay NYMC now and complete their secondary that means as soon as you are verified they can start looking at your application -- it means they will also download your LORs earlier too so your file will be all nice and ready for when you are verified.

I guess "Upon receipt of the AMCAS applicant information" means that upon AMCAS sending your name and email -- not being verified. weird wording.

So I got an e-mail yesterday saying that they still haven't received my letters and my secondary application was still not complete, however according to AMCAS all my letters were in by August 10th.

The e-mail told me to call NYMC admissions to fix it and the girl I spoke to goes "Oh, we've had all of your letters since August 12th, I'll go ahead and complete your application now". So instead of being complete August 12th, I was complete September 2nd.

Moral of the story: Call and get their butt's moving.

I agree with the others that you should submit your secondary asap so that as soon as you are verified you can start being completed. They won't mark your secondary as submitted/LORS but as soon as they get your verified app they will do it. I submitted app mid August got verified 8/25 and was complete 9/1.🙂

sorry if this a bad quesiton- but where do we sign up for the student host program??
