How feasible would it be to get an MBA? Is there a connection with the business school that would facilitate admissions for medical students?

I believe you go into it after your third year. You still need to apply to the Johnson School in Ithaca for the accelerated 1 year program but no GMAT is needed.

That bad, huh? :lame:

I got mine as well...expected a little more, but the cost is now somewhat comparable to my state schools. That's good, I guess?

EDIT: Reread my offer and will jump on the disappointment bandwagon. Considering withdrawal.

Was it disappointing compared to other schools or comnpared to your expectations?

I'm a little relieved that others share the same sentiment as me. I think the unit loan might have been a little high which is why the aid may have been lower than expected.

Is anyone also considering Columbia and Mount Sinai?

I know Columbia is the most reputable of the three for research opportunities, but Cornell has MSK/HSS/Rockerfeller, and Mount Sinai seems to have strong mentorship and clinical research...What are your thoughts?

Both. My other schools are state schools (in California, no less), so I expected a private school to have a lot more to offer financially. The exact opposite happened here.

The loans that make up the entire unit loan for me do not have bad terms on their own, but I agree that the sum of those loans is quite high. It's actually the same amount as the EFC they gave me (which I'll have to provide through private loans anyway), so my true loan amount is basically double the unit loan amount.

So unexpectedly disappointing.

Welcome to the club. I didn't get any financial aid at all and am not receiving any aid from my family either. I've been independent since graduating from college three years ago but none of that is factored in.

Wow, I'd expect someone in your situation to get more aid than me. Strange.

My parents want to help me, they just can't! I don't even know how the EFC is calculated, but I really think it's a bunch of crock. This is bizarre, especially since Cornell only has a class size of about 100. Where is all the money? 😕

Luckily, you are from CA and your state schools are awesome and super cheap. Illinois is not so wonderful 🙁

I wouldn't say super cheap, but you have a good point. I've seen UI numbers, and I feel for you.

I'd argue that Columbia has strong mentorship out of the different options, that's one of its strongest points in my opinion. The fact that you eat lunch every 2 weeks with your advisory dean to talk about anything and everything shows strong mentorship. I didn't apply to Mount Sinai but I'd pick Columbia if I were given those 3 options (given financial aid is decent).

I meant mentorship in research projects/academics. My impression of the advisory dean program at Columbia was that it's more about general/life advising, but maybe I'm wrong?

So is anyone actually happy with their financial aid from Cornell? I am on the waitlist and was thinking I should write a letter of intent to them now, but I'm assuming a letter of intent is taken as 'I will attend no matter what if accepted,' and that it would look bad if I had to decline a future acceptance because of financial aid issues. Any thoughts on this? Cornell is definitely my top choice school, but financial aid is very important and I doubt I would choose to go to a school where I would have significantly more debt than other schools.

I'm in the same boat..... except for the fact that I already sent Cornell my letter of intent and now I'm super worried 🙁 Its by far my top choice, but I dont know if I can justify going if I dont get ANY financial aid! The student(s) I talked to on my interview day said that Cornell was really great at financial aid, so I dont know what happened?

I know, the dean made a big deal when I interviewed about how Cornell can afford to be generous with financial aid, and since it is all need based there is more to go around for those who need it, etc etc. And the current students I talked to all seemed quite happy about their aid. So I did not expect to hear that they were being stingy this year! I love the school and it is my first choice, but is ANY school ever worth having about $80,000 more in debt than other schools? I don't think so.

I don't think it would be too bad to decline because of finances. That is a very legitimate reason. I understand how uncomfortable it would be, but really, what could they do to you? If they accept you off the waitlist as you are about to start elsewhere and you decline, they can't punish you or anything. They will likely just go to the next person on the list. I wouldn't worry about it 🙂

Maybe most of the students who end up matriculating there are the ones who receive the best need-based aid. I'd guess that since there are several people here (myself included) who are dissatisfied and withdraw, these types of people don't make up a significant portion of Cornell's class.

Also, I think a lot of scholarships through the school become available during the school year, and students get those to improve the aid given to them in April/May.

Can anyone provide any insight or advice into writing a letter of intent? How are you guys approaching it?

has everyone here already received their financial aid packages? i'm still waiting and was told it wouldn't be until after May 1, which seems kind of late...

For those on the waitlist, what does your status say on the status page? My status was changed to "Your application is incomplete. You have not submitted a secondary application and we have not received your letters of evaluation"...

Did you submit your financial aid information in time?

Same here...😕

yeah, i sent in everything as soon as they made it available, and filled out FAFSA and need access (for myself & parents) back in the beginning of March. maybe i should just give them a call?

Me too.

I really don't think it means anything.
Yeah, agreed.

On another note, should I make it off of the wait list, I'm curious if anyone has any insight into the experience of 3rd and 4th year students. What's it like in NY Presby? Is it an "old school" kind of place where med students have to duck and get out of the way, or is it more welcoming? What are the attendings and residents like?

Advisor deans are multi-purpose, but they definitely are able to set you up with research in the field of your choosing. Both research and clinical mentorship is augmented by the sheer number of Columbia (and Cornell I'm sure as well) alumni in the NYP hospital system. It builds a lot of camaraderie.

Thanks a lot!

Hi, would someone be able to share a link for cornell MC housing or their real-estate office? I will be doing research at WCMC this summer and was hoping to live not too far from there. Alternatively, is there a site where current medical students post information on subleases or availabilities?
thanks for any info!
(PM or thread post is fine)

Just withdrew from the class. Good luck, everyone.

Just withdrew my application. Hopefully that opens up a spot for someone here!

To those who went to second look: How was it!? Did a lot of people end up going/were the majority of people definitely matriculating at Weill? I'm just trying to gauge how active the waitlist will be this year...

Thanks!

I would really like to know the same!! where's all the Cornell love? 😕

The lovefest has shifted to the Facebook group somewhat. Second look was awesome and I think most of the students I talked to were planning to matriculate at Cornell. That being said, there were a number that were unsure so there is hope for the wiatlist still.

I think most people left second look with a very positive impression of Cornell from student culture to faculty support to academic opportunities. That being said, I know a few accepted students who have already withdrawn and didn't attend second look. In addition, some people who are currently planning to matriculate may be taken off waitlists at other schools that the prefer, which would open up more spots from the Cornell waitlist. What a waiting game - but don't give up yet!

Just withdrew--hope this opens up a spot for someone else!

Good luck to everybody waiting it out! Hopefully they'll start sending out some acceptances soon.

Did anybody else get this waitlist confirmation email?

Greetings!

Thank you for accepting a spot on Weill Cornell's waitlist this year. Although we are not currently making acceptance offers to waitlisted candidates, we are emailing everyone on the alternate list to confirm current interest.

If you wish to remain on our waitlist, there is no need to reply to this email. If, on the other hand, you have definitely decided to attend another school, please let me know via email.

You may have sent us an update recently. If so, thank you for your expression of interest. Updates are always added to applicant files and considered in the review process.

Best regards,
