I wonder if interviews are still in the cards for us...

Sinai interviews into march if I recall, so until you see people mentioning mid march interview dates, you still got a shot.

Doodl3s did a pretty good job describing student life here, I didn't read that carefully, but it sounds like he/she is a 1st year, so I'll throw some 2nd year perspective and address some things that weren't discussed that I think are important.

Sinai is incredibly responsive to student concerns. We have an anonymous evaluation system and we pretty much evaluate any person who so much as looks at us. (in seriousness, EVERY lecturerer/small group leader, even if you only see them once). If a pattern emerges, courses are altered. My class was the first to have histology and physiology integrated, our pharm course is different from the previous years and the first years are experiencing smaller changes (like TAs in Epi and Behavioral Science being removed/pushed into ASM and Brain & Behavior).

I say this to every applicant/pre-med I meet: GO TO A SCHOOL WITH PASS/FAIL. Make sure they're not pulling a fast one on you and saying it's pass/fail but it's actually honors/pass/fail. Everyone I know at a pass/fail school says it's essential and everyone I know who isn't at one is either jealous or tries to claim they don't think it's any different. I have never met someone who thinks having grades is better. If you've been on this forum for more than 5 minutes, you'll immediately get why having pass/fail the first 2 years of medical school is essential. I honestly can't imagine what it would be like to be at a school where people aren't itching to send out their review sheets or constantly sharing helpful websites or any other study tool they think it beneficial. Actually, I guess I can imagine, and it sounds pretty miserable and catty.

At Sinai, the medical school is the pride and joy of the institution. There are no undergrads and the grad school (which is only biological sciences) is small in comparison to us. The hospital lives and breathes for us but I will admit that this comes at the expense of some infrastructural and extracurricular things that may have been better at your bigger undergrad university. On a day to day basis you're much more likely to notice the benefits than the drawbacks, and anything that the school lacks can be found in NYC.

So, fellow Nov. 2 interviewers, what do you think is the verdict? I have a feeling if we don't find out by this evening, we may not hear anything until January.
Only a little frustrating having waited each day patiently and eagerly.

Well, I called the admissions office this afternoon and just got a "You've got to be patient." No word on when we'll hear... oh well.

They said we'd hear back by the end of this week when I called earlier today. The poor lady answering the calls (Jessica, maybe? I couldn't tell...) was probably just sick of us pre-meds calling all afternoon, haha. :luck:

I hope it's true this time! I feel so desperate waiting to hear back! lol.

Haven't heard anything yet. To early November people: sorry for giving you false hope, guys! I'm not sure why they would tell me "by the end of the week" if they had doubts about it, especially since they did it once already. Maybe they misunderstood my question. 🙁

Just curious, has anyone who received an email acceptance received the snail mail version yet?

I know MSSM is pass fail, but is it Pass/Fail with no internal rankings? Or are there internal ranking (Like Cornell)

Nope, nothing yet. Did anyone else receive a PORTAL acceptance yesterday? I'm trying to decipher the email and determine if they need an immediate response or not...

don't PORTAL acceptances come out in march?

There is internal ranking for the letter that goes out to residencies but pre-clinical grades/tests are not part of it.

Wait, so we are ranked off of our pre-clinical grades, but schools don't find out our grades? For example, getting a 96 would raise my class rank (which is only included in residency letters)?

The short answer to your question Raltima is No.

They told us all about how the MSPE is designed in a class meeting at the beginning of this year (and I believe now it is done at the beginning of 1st year) and while I don't remember all the specifics and am not 100% guaranteeing the accuracy of what I say below, I distinctly remember that there is nothing in the classroom you can do to improve your MSPE other than maybe what impression you leave on small group leaders who have the opportunity to write something about you individually, but even there, your LORs from 3rd/4th year will be more valuable. Residencies want to know if you're a good doctor, not a good test taker or class participator.

You are ranked on things like clinical grades, if you won certain awards (none of which are based on 1st/2nd year grades), if you did research, other extracurriculars, and a couple other things I think. Getting a 96 during 1st/2nd year won't help you out at all compared to the kid getting 70s. Getting honors in 3rd/4th year will have an appreciable impact. It sounds silly (but I know of several other schools with identical/similar systems) but the letter that the "school" writes for you is essentially neutral and just a list of accomplishments for everyone save the last sentence which says "Therefore, we feel that Raltima is a _______ candidate for your program." There is a short list of words that can be used in the blank, and I think it's, in order of strength, "outstanding", "excellent", "very good", or "good". Some sort of score is calculated based on the stuff I listed above. There are cutoffs for what adjective you can get, but there is no delineation between the #1 student (which I think gets outstanding) and the student who just barely got outstanding instead of excellent and so on down the line.

This. I have confirmed this with residency directors.

Out of curiosity.
Did anyone else receive a formal acceptance letter yet. If so did it list any academic requirements that you had to fulfill?

Just received an e-mail today, which is more of a congratulatory letter with a nudge to join the admitted Facebook group. Nothing about academic requirements. No snail mail yet. 🙂

Got the letter today - just says one year of the pre-reqs.

Do we need to send in a deposit? It doesn't say anywhere - if not, thats great! Love this school even more.

P.S. - PERCY you got in here too??? Maybe we will be classmates

Haha, mais oui! Didn't you see my "+1! Go Raltima!" post after you got in? Very exciting, all of this!

Which awards could these be?

Thank you for your detailed help! You are a great ambassador haha

Received an interview after waiting ~4 months post-completion. I'm super excited to visit here, I had almost lost hope!

I did, I did, I thought you were just congratulating me haha - I didn't see the +1 (was to excited)!

Just got the acceptance pack in the mail today, as well as a personal email from my interviewer congratulating me on the acceptance. My interviewer was a really nice guy and these little things make you appreciate the school that much more.

Got my packet yesterday - I love how we don't need to send in $$$ as a deposit. Not that it matters, but it made replying much easier!

Has anybody on the alternate list (wait list) received their snail mail yet?

Just received it yesterday (postmarked 12/12). It's just a letter you need to sign and send back to hold your spot.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a timeframe or deadline to respond?

On the MSSM Facebook page, they talk about a new pre-entry med program targeted at Engineers and Mathematicians. Sounds interesting

hi guys, is the interview format, one with faculty and one with student, and is it one on one? and is it open file?
thanks

I had two half-hour interviews. Both were with faculty members, one-on-one, open file, and as per the norm, they were very relaxed and conversational.

Who saw the 2nd year girl Sophie from mount Sinai win survivor south pacific two nights ago?

Was called for an interview invite today. Scheduled for mid Jan, complete 11/4ish
