Great meeting interviewees today! 🙂 Did you guys find it helpful to have us around during lunch? How'd your interview go? What do you think of the school?

The interview day was fantastic! The way everyone has worked to develop the school is really impressive and Beaumont-Royal Oak is amazing! Having the students at lunch was definitely a great help! Even though you all are still new, its nice to hear your perspective on how things are going so far. Great to see that everyone (students, faculty, staff, etc.) is so happy and there is a real sense of community! 😀

I'm glad to hear that you guys had such a good experience! I just finalized everything for my interview there and hope to have a similar one. My interview is set for Sept 23rd and I managed to find a ticket for $187 and will be living with family (only 30 minutes from the school). I'm already having such a great experience with this school!

interview invite! complete 7/24, oos. do they have a student hosting program? i have family about an hour away but i dont know if thats too far away to drive there in the morning. would anyone advise me doing that?

We do not yet have a formal student housing program, BUT we [students] are in the process of setting one up! If the program is not yet set up by the time your interview date rolls around, PM me and we might be able to work something out [I can send out a message to the class and see who's up for hosting].

For those interviewing at Oakland... get ready to be showered in awesomeness.

This school will blow you away, the facilities, the enthusiasm, the PEOPLE (they really do care). You don't feel like a number, in the slightest.

Your interview in the morning is held at the school and you do some walking around, tour of the anatomy lab etc. The anatomy lab isn't the prettiest, BUT they are building a BRAND new anatomy lab with all the fixins... they say estimated time 1 year till completion. But one of the anatomists said... hopefully in 2 years it will be complete complete.

Beaumont Royal Oak is an amazing facility. You will surely enjoy your tour here. All in all, for people coming out of state especially California and even NYC...you will be pleasantly surprised to find this gem of a school ready to educate you in the art and practice of medicine.

Good luck to all! :luck:

Anybody complete on 6/23 that hasn't heard anything yet? I'm still waiting.

Well looks like the person above me was. Congrats btw!

Completed on 6/28. Still waiting and checking everyday. Goodluck to you too:luck:

Wow, that's a pretty amazing assessment CodeBlu! I was surprised to get an invite from here this early in the game so the combination of the invite and the amazing opinions about the place have me really pumped up about heading out there in about 3 weeks.

Application completed 7/22, invited for an interview one month later, and scheduled the interview for next month. Good luck everyone! The program looks amazing!

So awesome to hear such positive remarks about Oakland.

Congrats Peter- definitely crossing my fingers on this school. Looks awesome. I sat in on one of their info calls a while back and sounds like a great program. When were you complete?

Thank! I was complete on 6/29.

Congrats Peter. It's nice to know that ppl who submitted early is still getting invites. From what the admissions office lady told me today, they have screeners assigned and some screeners take longer than others, that's why you don't hear back from them. Once screeners are done with your file, you will be placed on either 1) II 2) hold 3) rejection.
I'm still waiting, so i'm still under review. Hope my screener gets through this quick. :luck:

Thanks. We were in the same boat so you should be hearing back soon, hopefully with favorable news. Good luck.

I know... I submitted 7/18 (not that early, but still) and haven't heard anything. Come on Oakland, bring the whip out so your screeners can get things done more quickly lol

Rejected, got the e-mail yesterday.
IS,3.9+, 36. Unfortunate, seems like a really great new school to be a part of.

7/15 here...lol if only if only! well heres to hoping to hear back relatively soon...u know its kinda cruddy that some work faster than others cuz the longer we wait the more interviews sent and done and more likely we might end up on a waitlist if given an interview...blah

Sorry to hear that. That's really good stats. Actually, let me rephrase it. That's really great/awesome stats that you got, so do not worry, you will get in somewhere. Application processes are the weirdest things in the world. Some reject you, some accept you under same conditions. Weird....

Wow! I guess I just totally wasted my time filling out a secondary if you got rejected.y stats are nowhere near yours

I don't think you wasted your time. There are plenty of people in the process with stats like that who don't get accepted at certain schools because of their perceived fit for the program and the community.

Oakland has done what seems from an outside perspective of selecting a happy, diverse and EXTREMELY passionate class. The person who had a 36 and a 3.9, might have been just using Oakland as a safety net and did not take the "Why Oakland" question very seriously.

Either way, to the person who was rejected with those great stats, I'm sure the school for you is out there somewhere! :luck:

many people have been invited with lower stats...nobody knows how adcoms work...if u look at oaklands avg hes way above avg...and remember to have that avg there have to be people lower than the avg...and also remember that Oakland Med School is PRIVATE so they dont need to take any percentage of in state...I wouldn't stress they like well rounded applicants that are interesting...if u read their 2011 profile they boasted about the amount of languages spoken and different aspects of their students....they like interesting applicants

Very true, good point

Most medical schools like interesting applicants. I can specifically say that Northwestern University loves their applicants to have spent some time traveling.

I saw that and that's why I was hoping the fact I speak Spanish would help me. Keeping fingers crossed from what it sound like it takes them a long time to make a decision on your secondary. I jut turned mine in Monday so I'll be waiting a while.

i think it depends on whos screening ur app...there r many who get their response at just about a month and others who are still waiting pppaui called them and was told that some screeners go fast and others go slow...gotta stay patient and optimistic 🙂

They have certain things they are looking for. It is becoming more obvious on what the school will become and they are looking for people who will fit into the class and the type of physician the school wants to make. Oakland is not the place to go to want to be a part of academic medicine, they will tell you that. Oakland was made to fill a physician shortage in the Michigan area. They may want people who focus on the patient and on the clinician aspect. Oakland U is not exactly the highest funded NIH school in general and the associated medical school is not a research steamroller. I'm sure research is something the medical school takes seriously, but it is probably not as high on the priority list as actual patient interaction activities and the affiliations and desire to stay in the state of Michigan. Just something to think about. I know the languages is something they posted, but it's not the only thing they consider.

There is also a reason why they ask what they ask on the secondary and a reason they are taking the approach they are taking for their curriculum. The school has a vision, and the school does not reject every applicant with high stats, but CodeBlu may have alluded to it earlier, you have to show a desire to be here and a desire to be part of the community. The school is plopped right in the middle of a suburban neighborhood and the 3 beaumont hospitals are in suburban neighborhoods as well, so being a small city type person who wants to be a part of this community is probably an attribute the school is fond of.

How many do they accept from those interviewed? jw if anyone knows off the top of their heads?

I was actually perusing through their site today, and I my impression was that they accept roughly 1/3 of interviewees. Then again, their class size was 50 last year, and it's going to be 75 this year. I think there will be ~450 interviews, and schools generally accept twice the number of matriculants.

I interviewed here earlier this week; I was blown away. Nicest, most attentive staff you're going to find anywhere. Interviews were laid-back & conversational. The school exceeded all my expectations; the hospital is incredible. Now my top choice; would be thrilled to go here!

If you have any questions about the interview day, feel free to PM me.

Food was great!! 👍

Last year they accepted more than triple the amount of the class size. And you see the 70% in-state? They accept the percentages that apply, but so many out of states had this as a safety school and chose other schools over it, so it ended up as 70/30.

Thanks for the insight! It's amazing that after interviewing, applicants list Oakland as one of their top choices. I've never been in the area, but after researching the school, it does look pretty incredible. Can't wait to interview on 10/11!

I surmised that as well, Oakland being a new school and all. I don't have access to USNews data but would you think it reasonable that Oakland accepts ~40-50% of interviewees?

Ya, I've never heard of this school or hospital before this year, but it must be an unbelievable school based on feedbacks and what I've seen in their website. It is one of my top choices despite the school being new and everything. Can't wait to hear back from them; I hope my screener uses the weekend to review my file and make a decision 😎

As of current, I believe this is correct.

It would make complete sense... however, in the coming years when they graduate their first class... that WILL change. My belief is that the match list at this school will be incredible. The students have an innovative way of learning and faculty/staff who actually give a damn about them.

Dr. Folberg mentioned that this school could have been founded on primary care like Michigan State or even research like CCLCM... but it was not.

Also, people that completed their clerkships at Beaumont went on to places like MGH, New York Presbyterian, Mayo etc. So they really have a reputation in terms of clinical medical education. All that changed was they added a facility to teach basic sciences and made it awesome. 🙂
