Some have mentioned being able to "see" how many interviews have been granted so far, out of an expected 450 or so (I might not remember that number accurately), on the site where we can see our app status.

I can't find it so does anyone care to share that number? I'd love to know how slim my odds are getting 😛

140/420 scheduled as of 09/01

Thanks, guys! Even the Oakland SDN page is faster and better than other schools!

I surmised that as well, Oakland being a new school and all. I don't have access to USNews data but would you think it reasonable that Oakland accepts ~40-50% of interviewees?

I don't know from U.S. news data, I know from rumors circling around the school where people heard something from someone who interviewed etc. But yeah last cycle was definitely more than 40% acceptance after interview. Hopefully it's not the case this year, but again not being accredited will scare people off.

It honestly seems like the medical school at Oakland is doing everything right. The curriculum is basically what AAMC is striving for and the physicians associated with the hospital are more than willing to be a part of this school and give their expertise. They have mentoring programs as well with attendings and residents; I mean the structure is definitely there which surprised me.

Also the campus is becoming more legitimate, it's obvious the school is growing and the atmosphere is definitely exciting and geared towards student success. There are more student organizations opening up, more events and things to do on and off campus. This school definitely has a bright future.

It was more than 40-50%, but significantly less than the projected number of acceptances that other new medical schools had to offer in order to fill the class.

Thanks for the insight! Is the medical school next to the undergraduate campus? Also, are the surrounding environs suburban? I ask because, I'm wondering if you need a car to get around.

It is on the undergrad campus, along with everything else. It's in a tight little corner though. Keeps us young.

And yes... a car is a MUST.

Yes and no for the a car is a must -- since all of us are going to the same place at the same time [or at least half of us during labs], I know a couple of people who do not have cars and are fine. It might be easier to have one for rotations since we won't all be on the same schedule then... but for the first two years it's doable assuming you live near campus.

Crazy, I believe there were some rejections posted earlier. Though it has been quiet...keeping my fingers crossed!

Anything to increase the competitiveness 😎

Medical school is in a building that is smack dab in the middle of campus. Literally a 1 minute walk to the main student hang-out building that has a cafeteria, bookstore, lounges, game room, cafe, etc.

It's very suburban. You will definitely need a car although I'm sure the medical students would be nice enough to drive you around to the hospital in the first and second year, it's just everyone is scattered some live by the hospital, some live on campus, some live in random areas.

Goodness, been waiting since mid July and still nothing. That screener is sure taking his/her time, whoever it is. Anyone in the same boat as me? I know a lot of you've been waiting since July

Yup, complete 7/28 and still waiting.

im still here with u brother...about a week from 2 months since completion (7/15)...i say we hit up mexico for a bit and not check the internet for a month 😛

I would love to hit the US Open in New York and get my mind off of this application process if it weren't for work

I'll add to the waiting party...complete 7/10 and still no word from them. Let's just hope it's a slow reviewer and not bad news...I'm really pulling for this school.

Submitted on June 28th and patiently waiting. Please Oakland just say something!!

Hang in there folks. This process will bleed you dry unless you get really really comfortable with waiting. Try to keep busy, and your fingers crossed 🙂

Oakland friends:

Are there any tours of the med school for visitors? Also, where exactly is the med school? Thinking about driving to Detroit this weekend...

I could totally give you tour. Except I don't know a lot of Oakland's campus and O'Dowd is closed on the weekend. So, it'd be lame. Aside from the Rec center, library and Oakland center.

Interview tomorrow! So excited and anxious 🙂

I thought O'Dowd was open for studying?

Uhh yeah maybe they changed that in the last couple of weeks, but when I tried like 3 weekends ago, I couldn't get in. SO... I'll be looking into it. Plus, I don't think I've heard anyone say they were studying in O'Dowd on the weekend -- everyone has been in the med library [which has *really* good hours now compared to when I interviewed...].

It's funny how the situation is reversed here at Oakland where I'm the one with an interview and you're the one waiting...I wouldn't give up hope here; it seems like they rejected some guys right off the bat so if they didn't do that it looks like you might have a real shot still. Let's hope we both get the other interview we're waiting for :luck:

Haha, yea. I'm not really worried or anything, cuz the admissions told me that time of notification depends on your screener, so hearing back late isn't a bad thing. I did submit a little late compared to early candidates, so just waiting patiently

Use me as an example! Complete on 6/29, and received an invite last week. No news is good news this early in the cycle, particularly at a school which issues holds / rejects this early in the cycle.

To those interviewees that are interviewing today/have interviewed/will interview, please post an honest review of the day for your fellow SDNers.

Amandaeleven has been more than helpful/instrumental in my knowledge of OUWB. But the more the merrier 🙂

Have a great weekend!

CodeBlu, is OUWB your first choice at this point? I'm getting a kick out of your major love for the school....but definitely looking forward to coming there in about a couple weeks!

It sort of is... hahaha all the schools I applied to, I have major love for. I just hope one of them loves me back.

I should also add... that out of any other school that I have communicated with... OUWB takes the cake. It's a mutual respect I have for them.

Jalby's story about Georgetown? Complete opposite story here at OUWB. They really genuinely care and are nice.

Dr. Bee is absolutely amazing. I took her last year and she was definitely one of the most knowledgeable and exciting professors I've ever had.

On visit day they told us that she won teacher of the year.

She definitely deserves it. I believe there are other anatomy teachers as well for the medical school and I think someone that interviewed said physicians would be popping in the anatomy lab to show transplants and surgeries etc.

Why is that, may i ask?

I don't like to speak poor of another school. Wayne is an excellent institution, but it's not for me. I had large classes in undergrad, and yes they were awesome, but when I got to my advanced physiology and my advanced biochem classes that were less than 100 people, sometimes max 50... it's much more interactive.

Wayne has an ENORMOUS class size... which doesn't seem to be a good fit with me. Although, if it were the only school that would accept me, I would gladly go.

A few friends of mine have had poor encounters with their admissions office. Rudeness, and being treated like a second class citizen is just unacceptable in ANYTHING you do. Regardless if an applicant has been successful or not, they should be treated with respect. One day this person you're being rude to, may be caring for you or your family.

Most schools I've interacted with have been AMAZING in terms of enthusiasm and respect. OUWB is one example. Hence, why I've been singing their praises. Respect is a two way street, and I don't want to be just another numbered med student 3390078987 at Wayne State. When I can be number 13/75 (HouseMD reference there 😉 ) at OUWB. 😀

Good luck in your future endeavors.
