Quick question,

received the secondary today before I was verified, and was wondering if it's okay to submit the secondary before our AMCAS has been verified. I know some schools it's okay like GW but others not so much like Albert Einstein.

I'm assuming it's okay since they sent the secondary ahead of the verification but just wanted to double check. Thanks!

i dont know if there is any rule. u might be better of calling the admissions office!

Is it application suicide to not put anything in the additional comments box?

These essays are meant for you to stand out from everyone else, so if you answer no you might just get lost in the stack of apps. Also, a lot of other schools ask the same or very similar questions (diversity/anything else you want to add) so why not write them and use them for this app?

I think relatively few things could count as 'application suicide.' If you really have to think about what to put in the additional comments sections, then you probably don't need to make any additional comments.

It would be misguided/wrong for them to have an optional question be a make it or break it as far as their decision goes. Just be honest. Nothing else to say? Say no. Not a big deal.

The option of asking: do you think you'd add anything to the diversity of our class, is a bit different. If you honestly answer 'no,' then you probably aren't as compelling a candidate as someone who would answer 'yes.'

As with anything involving applying/interviewing, just be yourself.

It probably is. Were you just gonna answer "No" to the diversity question?

calm down dude...there are two essays...one for additional comments, one for diversity. i'm not putting anything in the first one.

Yeah i'm not totally ******ed. Of course I answered the diversity question. I just meant the additional comments essay (number 1).

Submitted and paid. How soon do the letters of rec get transmitted to TUSM? My letters were all automatically in for other schools like BU...

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as mean or anything. When he said additional comments I thought he just meant the open boxes if you say Yes to any questions. My mistake and I completely apologize.

I think cdonahue put it best in saying that you simply have to be honest. If you truly have nothing to say then don't say anything. Basically, don't try and fill up space. But if there is something you would like to add, it doesn't hurt and it most definitely will help - expertise in a field of art, music, playing a college sport or something. And why not help your application out?

I do still think that the essays are meant for the school to get a better idea of you and for you to stand out more. With the school receiving close to 9,000 applicants a year, it's definitely helpful if you have something that helps them see you in a different light or makes a lasting impression on them. Maybe you wrote everything you needed to in your AMCAS and maybe you have things you wouldn't necessarily have room to or want to put into your primary. Either way it's a case by case situation. anyways, good luck and sorry again for the miscommunication earlier.

If it were worded like Boston's Secondary where they really seem to emphasize NOT writing anything extra unless it's super extraordinary then I may feel differently.

I have to say this though, if two borderline interview applications were received and were identical in stats and activities, that additional comments box *could* make or break the decision. If it was written simply to fill up space and was complete BS, then it would break it. If it helped the committee see the applicant's other qualities (commitment to service, research, maybe extended experience in a field that would contribute to the diversity of the class) then it may make it. Do I necessarily agree with this? I'm not so sure playing piano for 15 years makes you a great medical doctor. But it is what it is and just like in undergrad when you had to do well in school, volunteer constantly and gain healthcare experience, the application is another hurdle to jump.

What are people writing for the first essay, the one about "adding anything else"?

Is anyone thinking about writing about "why tufts" or "why I would be a good match for the school"? I am thinking about writing about one of those two topics, but I am not sure that is what the essay should be used for.

why tufts would probably be a good idea. something else that might be good to talk about is an activity (IM sport, club, something you do for fun) that is not mentioned in the AMCAS

Although i bet you would stand out if you just answered NO, you'd probably be the only one to do that. still that's not wise

I like this idea, but I'm guessing it depends on the school. I've read on here that for Jefferson and Boston, it's not a good idea to write about "Why ________ ?" for these optional sections, but on the other hand SLU would prefer that.

I used it to write about why Tufts

I highly doubt it matters unless you have unique/ extremely compelling reasons to attend a certain school. If they wanted a why tufts essay, they would have asked for one. IMO it doesn't make you look any more special for going to their website and writing fluff about the curriculum/research/whatever.

heh that's true. Like i said earlier, it may not necessarily hurt you, unless you're just making random nonsense up. But if you do answer it honestly it would most likely help. It's not like you're writing a four page essay people will get annoyed with, it's only a paragraph.

As for what people are writing about, at first I thought a why tufts would be a good idea too, but xATB brought up a really good point I agree with. I think writing about something not on your primary - such as a sport, an interesting hobby (like on another thread someone mentioned photography and getting published) or a talent (music, art, etc.).

I actually wrote about service and how growing up in miami affected me to always want to do service (I'm actually doing a tufts MBS program this year so I talked in the end about how I'm gonna get involved with their Sharewood free healthcare Clinic for the medically underserved of the boston area)

It's so hard to gauge which schools want you to write "why" and which school don't in the additional comments box, I feel like unless they specifically say "Please refrain from writing your interest in this section" it's fair game....? who knows.

I agree, I hadn't heard that about Jefferson (can someone link me?). I had heard that about SLU but isn't this all conjecture anyways? Could schools really be PISSED that you said "I want to go to your school"-- seems kind of cruel to me.

yeah for a school like tufts where they simply have an additional comments box, I think writing "Why Tufts" isn't a bad idea. I still believe writing about something else like a talent might be better but that's really just my opinion. And im definitely not the tufts adcom. For all I know maybe they love why tufts essays

In the end, I think it's up to your discretion.

nice user name 👍

From the Tuft's secondary page: "The purpose of requiring a photograph is to ensure that the applicant who took the MCAT, the applicant who came to our campus for an interview, and the applicant who matriculated to TUSM are all one and the same person."

I really hope this doesn't mean they have my picture from MCAT day. Not an attractive photo...

i think i know some people who have and they got in haha...they also had pretty decent stats

I answered no to the first question. Just submitted. Time to play the waiting game.

Status site says complete...no email verification though

Received the Tufts message stating that secondary has been received and app is entering the audit process? What is the audit process?

From the e-mail just sounds like you're complete, but they have to go in and manually add your letters once your AMCAS is verified

Received the same email. They made it clear that they have received the secondary and will add in the letters manually. Process should take around 2 weeks to be fully complete.

My letters were added yesterday at 4PM EST. I received the audit email yesterday at 11AM EST.

Never been so happy to receive an auditing notice! Got mine today

What does the email say in terms of the next step/timeline for your app once you were completed
I noticed the update on the status site, but I never got email confirmation. I noticed a couple of posts from yesterday saying the same thing. This must just be how Tufts does it. I'm guessing the next step would be invites/rejections....not sure of a timeline though.

Checked my status online.. they have everything so I assume I'm complete but no such notification via email or a formal "Complete" status on the status checker.

Submitted my primary a few days ago. Tufts is a bit pricey, but it would be a DREAM to go to med school in Boston. Good luck everyone.

Hm, designated the AMCAS letter to Tufts a few days ago... submitted the Secondary on Friday morning... haven't gotten any emails though, and letter is not yet marked as received. I wonder when the interview invites will start happening!

Hi guys!

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I know it is early in the app process for this year, but I deferred my matriculation so I'll be starting with anyone who enters Tufts in 2012. If you have any questions about the application process, Tufts, ect, just reply here or PM me. Looking forward to meeting those of you who choose Tufts Med for next year and will be in my class 🙂. I fell in love with Tufts and Boston and I am so happy with my choice!

Good luck everyone!

If you have something legitimate to add, do it. If you don't, don't waste their time or yours. I didn't put anything and I got in, so it is definitely not application suicide to not write anything. I did respond to the diversity question though. If you can't think of a way you are going to be unique or contribute at all to the diversity of the class, you might have issues getting into any medical school. 😉

Hi. Does anybody know if I can apply to Tufts even if I have not completed all my course requirements yet? I have one inorganic chemistry course left and will finish it in the spring of my senior year. How about for Yale, Drexel, or Cornell?

thanks

From their site:

"Eligibility Requirements

Tufts School of Medicine requires that students meet certain standards before beginning the application process." (self-bolded)

http://www.tufts.edu/med/admissions/md/eligibility/index.html

I recommend calling the admissions office tomorrow to double check. Lots of times, these things are not set in stone.
