I didn't hear from Dr. Bing-You via phone at all. I got the call from Dr. Neumeyer and then about a week later got a big packet with more info from Tufts. So, based on my experience, I would say it's normal to not hear from Dr. Bing-You.

Does anyone know if the Maine Track interview is open- or closed-file? Or some mix of the two (perhaps the two "regular" interviewers have reviewed our files but the MMI folk haven't)? Thanks!

I know the two "regular" interviewers had read my file, but I'm not sure about the mini-interviewers. We really stuck to the topic or the scenario, and none of them said anything that made me think they had read my file, but that doesn't mean they hadn't.

I believe this is the case. I'm pretty sure that at least one of the MMI people told me they hadn't read my file, but the longer interviewers definitely had read my file.

Hey all --

So when I interviewed 2/3, Dr. Bing-You said that there are still spots left (in other words, ME Track doesn't overbook). Can anyone (perhaps a reapplicant) give me the deal on how many spots are left, and what's likely to happen over the coming months? For instance, if I'm deferred, how likely will it be that I will eventually be given an acceptance? Do accepted folk tend to stay with the ME Track or is there a lot of action on the wait-list?

Thanks a bunch.

I honestly have no idea about other acceptees, but I do know that if I don't get one of the scholarships (I've already been passed up once and have only been a ME resident for 2 years, so this is looking likely), I'll be going to UVM, so that would open up a spot for somebody.

Well, for one thing doing the Maine Track would mean I have to move away from Portland for two years, and then move back to Portland, so my partner and cats would just stay in Portland and I would be in a long-distance relationship for two years, whereas if I move away from Portland for good they are all coming with me. But aside from that more superficial reason, I just liked the atmosphere at UVM a lot more. I felt like my values were more similar to UVM's values, and I'm really interested in training in and eventually hopefully practicing in a state with single-payer healthcare. Also, I loved Burlington, maybe not more than Boston, but definitely more than Portland. I don't think UVM is a better school than Tufts, just probably a better fit for me. But not such a better fit that I wouldn't jump at Tufts if I did get some money from Maine Med.

What do you mean, you've already been "passed up"? You applied to ME Track last year, was accepted but didn't get offered a scholarship?
 
Another question -- and I'm probably going to post a few more things by the end of today, knowing myself --

What's the word on sending thank you letters after the interview? Someone I know who interviewed this year said he didn't, because of the special nature of the MMI (you'd have to send thank-you notes to about 10 people). He was accepted, so obviously not sending thank-yous wasn't a problem.

I emailed Patti White after my interview asking about this, but never heard back from her. And it's getting kind of late, don't want to send thank-yous much later than a week after the interview...

What do you think??
 
Found an answer to one of my questions...looks like I asked the same thing a while ago on the regular Tufts application thread.

Having said that, you are probably more likely, all other things being equal, to be waitlisted if you interview so late, but if that happens, you still have a fair shot at getting in. I'll bet you half the 2016 Maine track class will have gotten in off the waitlist.

What's the reasoning behind this / likelihood of this?

I personally sent brief thank-you notes to everyone (including the MMI interviewers), just because it's professional and I did genuinely enjoy those conversations. However I don't think it's necessary, especially considering how many interviewers there were, and I very much doubt it affects one's chances of getting in. Do what feels right!

No, I mean I got a letter that said, "We're not giving you a scholarship at this time, but the process is rolling and we are still considering you." Which I took to mean they evaluate acceptees for scholarships several times, and I didn't get one that time around.

Yeah, wait and see what happens before freaking out 🙂

However, my reasoning was basically that some/many of the people who are accepted to the Maine Track will have other acceptances. Of those people, some will choose not to matriculate to the Maine track, at which time Tufts will go to the waitlist and start accepting people.

The likelihood of this? I can only guess. Maybe 70% of accepts will have other acceptances besides the Maine Track? Of those, let's say 40-70% end up matriculating to the Maine Track (it's a relatively new program, so that might scare some people off. Plus Tufts is mad expensive lol). So that means that out of 36 acceptances they give out initially, 25 applicants might have other acceptances, and 10-18 of those will turn in to matriculations to the Maine Track.

So 36 accepts - (9 people with only one acceptance to the Maine Track) - (10-18 people who choose the Maine Track) = 9 to 17 spots that will be filled by waitlisted students.


And of course, this is ALL guesswork and speculation. Plus I suck at math. But the bottom line is that people will definitely get off the waitlist, so there is very good reason to keep your hopes up if you are in that situation. Best of luck!

Not me. Interview 1/20 and haven't heard anything. Have any phone calls gone out?
I think the committee met last friday if I remember correctly but not 100 percent sure.

I would assume that they would let us know one way or another, so even if the phone calls went out, then either the rejection/waitlist emails would go out around the same time.

Although, who knows. We can only guess based on how previous months have gone.

Do they go strictly month-by-month? So for example, even if you interviewed the very end of January, you'll hear back early to mid February? (Which is right NOW, so I see why ya'll are really anxious). I interviewed 2/3 and will hear back early to mid March.

On another note, does anyone know how many interview groups/dates are left? I want them to hurry up and be done with it so I can know where I stand! Yeah, I'm being kind of selfish right now :caution: 😛

If you go to the doodle scheduler via the link they sent you it currently shows that they are booked through March 9th, with the possibility of having two more interview weeks on the 16th and 23rd
 
All of the "regular track" folks seem to have received calls last Friday and continuing through Monday and yesterday. I wonder what the hold up is at our end. I suppose it's possible that (gasp) people in Maine Track do get calls and don't post on SD! No, that can't be right. But seriously...

Did you interview in January? If so, they are kind of late...I'll be anxious to hear when you guys finally hear. As for the "regular track", I wouldn't pay attention to what is going on with those folk, since the admissions process and everything is pretty separate. Yes, Dr. Bing-You goes to Boston and meets with the regular Tufts ADCOM, but...things might still be on a different timeline. ? 😕

i just called the office... they said the decisions for maine track should go out by the end of the week. not tooooo helpful but maybe it puts people's minds at ease a bit.

True enough...

However, I would assume that if the phone calls went out, that those who were waitlisted or rejected would receive an email around the same time. We'll just have to wait and see by the end of the week. Thanks Surendrall24 for sharing the info about the call to the office.

Which office? Boston or Maine Med?
 
I interviewed last Friday (2/10) and they told me that I would hear back in early March. Not sure if that helps to get your timeline nailed down.

Same here. Do you know if deferred is the default status if you don't get accepted? I'm not sure if someone would post if they got flat out rejected, but I was just trying to gauge whether or not Tufts even went that route, or if they would always opt for deferred if you weren't accepted.

I really wish I knew. It's hard to imagine they outright reject at this point but that's just naïve speculation. Either way, I'm disappointed with anything less than an acceptance for this program. It's been quiet as far as any January acceptances though. Are you guys out there?! I'm surprised the emails went out before the phone calls IF that's even what happened.

I do know someone who got flat out rejected (not deferred) from the Maine Track post-interview during the last admissions cycle. I obviously don't know the breakdowns of deferred versus rejected. But I really have to think that if they bring you in for an interview, on average they will either admit or defer you. It's a small program with a fixed number of slots, so they can't really over-enroll and simply hope that they'll wind up with 36 in the end. Plus, they know that Tufts-Boston has to give the final go-ahead and they wouldn't waste their time with someone who wouldn't pass Boston's review. I think they accept folks outright who are reasonable slam-dunk candidates and defer the rest. I imagine that deferred applicants won't realistically hear anything until mid-May when ppl with multiple admits turn down Maine's invitation. At that point, the committee would compare all the deferred kids with each other and see how many remaining slots there are to slowly and deliberately fill the ~36. Could be wrong, but that's what I'm thinking (I'm deferred as well). So even though I do get my hopes up during the early weeks of the month, I'm honestly not expecting to resolve this until mid May at the earliest.

Is the Maine Track your first choice? What about the rest of you who have just been deferred? Ugh I wonder what's going to be in store for us February interviewees... :scared:

I'm pretty sure it's my top choice. This is really dissapointing, I thought my interview went really well so I'm curious as to why I was deferred. We'll see, I'll be sending some letter soon enough.
 
Sorry to hear about your deferrals everyone. Would you guys care to share your stats/residency so us February interviewees can have a better idea of where we stand.

Ps - I would expect there to be a fair amount of movement from the wait list because some people I've talked to only plan to hold their spots if they get the scholarship, so there is always hope!

Did anybody figure out if there were acceptances given out yet for this batch of interviews? I'm a deferred applicant but I sent in new grades and an update letter from the Tufts MBS admin so I was hoping my file would look more appealing this round:/ Does anybody know what chances are of deferred people hearing before May?
