I just took it last week. It's not really an essay. I think I responded 4-5 sentences. I don't know if its appropriate for me to write what the question is- but its not anything pertaining to you, or your credentials, or asking for an experience. It is just an opinion/definition question. Don't sweat it!

lol funniest question an interviewee asked a med student at my buffalo interview:
how far is buffalo from the north pole?

also, just to say this, i thought the instructional facilities and student lounge at buffalo were amazing. people were very nice too.

Can anyone tell me why people generally prefer downstate over buffalo (based on a number of sdn threads, and real life)? wouldnt i get a better residency if attending buffalo? i didnt like the facilities at downstate so much, and buffalo is a ranked school (better research than at downstate it seems). For those of you who chose buffalo over downstate, please elaborate. thanks!

I know I'm probably being paranoid. But if I haven't heard anything yet (complete in July, like it matters at Buffalo), does it mean that the committee simply hasn't gotten to my application yet or could it be a silent rejection? I have sent 2 emails to Mr. Russo (an update, and a general interest letter) and both times he only replied with a thank you, so he didn't indicate if the committee has seen my application or not.

if you're using usnews apparently downstate is unranked which means it didn't give enough information as opposed to rank not published which means it is low. apparently it's rouhgly stony > downstate > buffalo > upstate. downstate is in new york but it's in a rather rough neighborhood so it's not for everyone.

I disagree with this. This year's USNews has Buffalo higher ranked than Stony Brook, and I know they told us that Buffalo just received this huuuuge grant from NY State to move their facilities downtown to the hospital and make a bunch of new reforms to the program. I know reputation always takes a couple years to catch up, but at least in terms of research, from what I saw, Buffalo is wayyy better than Downstate.

well i don't know, this is just what people said in the suny comparison thread. it seems that downstate is the place to go if you're more interested in the clinical aspect of medicine and if you like nyc.

well obviously if you like NYC, you should go to downstate because what other choice do you have? There seems to be a lot more research being done in buffalo but downstate has dorms right on campus while buffalo does not and most students elect to live some distance from the school. also, you definitely need a car in buffalo while you wouldn't in brooklyn.

Just withdrew my acceptance here, hope one of you on the waitlist hears good news soon!:xf:

much appreciated 🙂
Seriously... definitely appreciated. Also, Dr. Sevrin and the Ad Com should be commended for their extremely fair and efficient admissions process. How many other schools did you apply to that not only give you an answer the next day, but ensure that the dean of admissions reads your application? My hat goes off to UB.

yea buffalo is legit

yah, i don't know what the other schools are doing but they should take a letter from buffalo's process.

Efficient in the random review system? Not so much.

Also, just to play devil's advocate... UB accepts a very small # of people post interview and while waitlisting and ranking the majority (in Feb) so it seems that, while other schools take a long time before letting you know re acceptance/WL/rejection UB waitlists you unless you are superb/awful and then takes it's time to rank you afterwards?

Regardless, I prefer UB's system to most others.

Does anyone know if they are still sending interview invitations out? My application status is still "secondary application received." Thanks!

Agreed, I'm assuming that random review helps to keep them unbiased as they go through applications and it seems that there is no advantage to having an early interview since they assign you a numerical score after interviewing. It's the most transparent process and the one that I am the least stressed over because of their transparency.

I agree the transparency is really nice at UB. I just wish their status checker was a little more accurate pre-interview. I emailed Mr. Rosso about this on Friday Huskies88, but no response yet.

Thanks Nic, let me know what he says! 👍

Yeah, +1 on this as well. This is the last place I have yet to hear anything from yet.

Checked online status today was upper third since early February...just changed
To Accepted!!!

i heard that if ur on the upper third, your chances of acceptance are very high

Didn't get an email yet we'll see when I do I'm sure it will be
Coming soon

Just received an II...I thought/hoped I was done with interviews.

Haha I'm grateful, but I'm also tired of this entire process. It really wears you down....and now I'm complaining like a typical pre-med student. ugh.

II this morning. thrilled to be here.

is it crazy to ride the bus to buff from NYC tues night (10pm~6am) and sleep on the bus then interview and ride the bus back wed night and sleep on the ride back?

i'd say if you can ACTUALLY sleep on buses and are very brave you should do it. I want an II!!

Coming from someone who can be dead asleep in any situation in minutes, probably not the best idea. Does buffalo do student hosting?

take a plane the night before and get a good night's sleep
it's worth it.

The essays vary from week to week but dont worry about them, they are not a huge factor in your selection. Does anyone know if we can move from the waitlist to accepance every thursday? *thats the day new decisions come out*

Do we have to call to find out our waitlist position or will it eventually show up on the status page?

Thanks! Its still not there but I guess this is a good time for me to work on my patience seeing how the wait is far from over!

what do you guys mean by the online status page? is there a link that they forward you or something? the only link I have is the secondary application link that we log in with our AMCAS ID...feel like I'm missing out on something...

nevermind, i just checked my online status. it still says "secondary application received". no interview, no waitlist... is anyone on the same page here ?

same with me...no word since email notifying I was complete/received in September..

I liked the Amherst Holiday Inn. Look them up, call them and ask about UB med school interview discount. Their complimentary shuttle will pick you up from the airport, bring you from the hotel to UB and then pick you up and bring you to the airport again.

I'm from NYC and used to go 4.5hrs to Boston every month. The thought of 8hrs to Buffalo does not sit well with me.

^ man same here.. I'm not sure if they send out rejections or not, but the e-mail did say they review applications till March 31st and the last interview day is at the end of April. Their e-mail also said that application updates will not help you until post-interview 🙁.
