Couple of EDP-related questions someone asked me to post:

1) Do you have to be an Indiana resident to apply to IUSOM's EDP program?

2) Do you complete a state residency verification process prior to the August 1 deadline, or is that just for tuition? (If you apply from a non Indiana address but claim state residency, do you have to prove it on the front end?)

3) Does anyone have stats on the success rates of IU EDP applicants?

4) Does the GPA cutoff include post-bacc work, or is it just the undergrad GPA? (I would assume it includes everything since that's how AMCAS calculates it.)

Thanks!

Did anyone receive the emails about acceptance this round?

I tried calling the admissions office today and the answering machine said that the office was closed from 1/18 until tomorrow (Tuesday) morning...I'm guessing this might have to do with why the portal hasn't changed. I can't even access mine, just gives me an error.

Do you guys know if they give out info regarding how full specific regional campuses are already? I'm going to call tomorrow, but just wondering if anyone has already checked?

does anyone know what the class size is going to be for this year? I heard talks about budget cuts for this school

I received my acceptance letter this cycle (dated Jan 15th, received Jan 17th). What are the chances for the Indianapolis campus in the lottery?

~60% was what we were told on interview day.

I called a regional campus and they told me that Indy is in charge of everything and they don't release the info, so the regional campus directors don't even know if their campus is full yet.

This is correct. The campus director I spoke with told me they don't even know who is going there until the summer before classes.

Interviewed January 9th.... on January 18th I got an email saying my file was now eligible for review...I hope to hear good news the week of Feb 15!

Does the lottery happen before the May 15 deadline? I noticed someone earlier on this thread said it happened after the deadline last year, but I've talked to a few people who said they received the lottery decision in March/April. Just wondering if anyone knows how it's going to work this year.

Interviewed for MSTP Jan 15th and got a rejection letter from them today. Still holding out for the potential of good news in the form of MD-only next week...

Does anyone know which campuses have block scheduling? I believe South Bend does, but which other campuses?

Thanks!

How long should it take to hear back after the interview? OOS interviewed at northwestern campus back in November and it's been dead silent since then.. A little worried. Who would I send an email to to inquire about this? Thanks and congrats to all the acceptances!

Just be patient and wait it out. I interviewed in Oct and I haven't heard anything since. My interviewer told me that no news is good news, it just means the adcom has not gotten to your file yet.

I interviewed back in September, and have yet to hear anything. I find it hard to believe that my file hasn't been reviewed for six months. I haven't seen anyone posting about post- interview rejections, so I'm assuming we've been reviewed and either rejected or wait listed. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.

My interviewer told me that every committee meeting they go over as many files as possible and they make a decision right then and there. So not hearing anything just means they haven't gotten to you yet. The pile is pretty much randomized, so the date of your interview doesn't matter too much. But who knows with this process.

I can't even imagine waiting for 6 months for a decision, sorry you have to go through this. Hopefully you will hear some good news soon!

I hope this is true since I'm in the same boat lol

This is true. It's a point system, so your file is placed where your points score you, so even if you interview on the first day they might not get to review yours because it's farther down in the pile, and they add to the pile every interview day.

Did you guys interview and then receive an email stating that your file was ready for review? I got one right after my interview, so I thought they would review my file in the next meeting, which is Feb 15th. If that is not the case, technically I could be waiting until May to get a response?

Booooooo :-(

Nope no ready for review email. just went home after the interview and it's been all quiet since then

The email said the following...

" Your application for admission to the Indiana University School of Medicine is now eligible for review by the Admissions Committee. Acceptance letters will be mailed on approximately the 15th of the month, October through March, and at intervals thereafter as necessary. Nonacceptance letters will be mailed on a periodic basis throughout the year. No notification indicates that your application remains under consideration. Everyone will receive a decision by June 1. Please remember to have an official transcript sent at the end of each grading period."

Just as an FYI, it gives you some info about your no-notification status.

I interviewed the first day for non-EDP (Sep. 5th maybe?). I have yet to hear anything, either, and i'm a re-applicant. This whole point system thing can be really frustrating. It seems to me that if your application hasn't been reviewed yet, you don't have high enough points, aka, you aren't 'good enough' yet compared to the rest of the applicant pool. Naturally they want to get the best students possible, so it makes sense to hold all of them and wait for hopefully the top applicants to come in. Then, if they aren't filled yet, the applicants who didn't score as high will get reviewed. I would have like to think there was some advantage to applying early, but it doesn't appear that way. Keep the faith, eventually we will hear back...I've waited almost 14 months now..

For anyone who applied as a grad student, at what point does your undergrad GPA get replaced by your grad gpa? When I applied, I was not enrolled in grad school, but I have been since the fall and have a 4.0 for my grad classes (my undergrad gpa was a 3.5, so this hurts my app, I imagine)

When I applied, my undergrad GPA was < 3.5, but my grad GPA was 4.0. I can't give you an objective answer as to the point at which your undergrad GPA gets replaced (I doubt it ever does), but I know they look more heavily upon grad coursework. An admissions committee member told me that regardless of your program, grad courses get weighed much more heavily than undergrad courses as they are, like med school courses, grad level. I'd say the only way for them to see your grad GPA though is an update letter. If you sent in an updated transcript, great, but I just don't see that getting to the people it needs to. Will the update letter? I don't know. I'd like to think so. I don't even know if they accept update letters but it would be completely worth it in my opinion.

I've sent them an update letter and transcripts for the grads that I've gotten, but yes, like you said, who knows how my app gets updated to reflect that i'm in grad school. I doubt my point total will suddenly change and push me up to get reviewed. My fear is that I won't get reviewed till the end, at which point they'll see my better grades and how I did everything they told me to while re-applying, but by then the class will be filled and i'll be stuck on the waitlist again all summer..who knows

Thanks for the input, though!

Thanks for the info... I didn't know they heavily considered graduate school GPA... that gives me a little more hope. My MCAT is average, but every time I leave an interview I think about how I will be able to overcome my low undergraduate GPA to gain admissions. Even with an awesome interview, I still think every school I have interviewed at is a long shot ... really hope for good news from IU.

How deeply do they analyze grad work? Do they look at actual classes or overall gpa from grad?

In my experience, they see grad work as a plus but that's about it. During my interview, they were really interested in what I did in my program (I was "diverse" because I didn't have an MS in Bio, apparently), since my white paper was submitted to change healthcare law. Aside from talking points, no other change. They weight the MCAT heaviest.

Agreed. I highly doubt a good grad GPA can overshadow MCAT performance.

I don't think graduate GPA will do much to compensate for a low MCAT, but in my experience it has done wonders to compensate for my uGPA (or lack of GPA in my case). I highly doubt I would have interviewed/been accepted had I not had that to back up my case that I made some mistakes in the past, but I can do the work today.

I know probably most of you arent interested in IU's Rural Program but I was wondering if you guys knew anything about it... Do you have to be accepted in the normal program before getting an II to the Rural program or what? I'd appreciate the help please haha

Hey, I got an email after my interview asking me to apply to the rural and I asked some of the questions that you had and this was their response. Hopefully its hopeful to you as well.

Applying to the R. Med Program means that you have two active applications to IUSM. An acceptance into one program does not guarantee an acceptance into the other program. A rejection from the R. Med Program does not mean that you cannot be accepted into the traditional MD Program. Every year we have a few instances of this. If you are rejected by for the traditional MD Program, however, you can no longer be considered by the R. Med Program. Please keep in mind that both programs conclude their regular admissions processes by March 15th. If you apply to the R. Med Program but are not accepted but are accepted to the traditional MD Program, you are not automatically placed at the Terre Haute campus. This does not mean that you won't end up at the Terre Haute campus. The Terre Haute campus has 12 spots for R. Med and 12 spots for traditional MD students. Bloomington, South Bend, and Lafayette are very popular campuses and if you request one of these campuses, especially if you are accepted this late in the process, there is a very good chance that you will not get your first choice and will end up at Evansville, Fort Wayne, Muncie, Northwest, or Terre Haute. If you choose to be a part of the Indianapolis lottery, which usually has a hundred more requests than spots available, and are not assigned to Indianapolis, then you are placed at one of the other campuses that still has an opening, which is more than likely Evansville, Fort Wayne, Muncie, Northwest, or Terre Haute.

"Please keep in mind that just because Indianapolis is the most popular campus, there is no loss of educational opportunity at the satellite campuses. IUSM has a statewide curriculum. No matter what campus you are assigned you are being taught by IU employees or IU approved employees. Many of our satellite campuses actually have new facilities, and smaller classes which allow for a more personal connection between faculty and students. Unlike Indy, which is a traditional large lecture where it is more difficult, though not impossible, to have intrapersonal connections. Also many of our satellite campuses have different educational methods to presenting the core IUSM curriculum, such as problem-based learning and team-based learning. I recommend that regardless of whether or not you request a rural app, that you look at what each of our campuses have to offer, so that you can make the best educated decision regarding your future. Information about each campus can be found at: http://www.medicine.iu.edu/n/iusm-campuses/"

Thank you very much this is very helpful

I just withdrew my acceptance at IU and to interview for their rural program. I hope my acceptance goes to a deserving SDN member! 🙂

Is there anyone out there who has gotten an acceptance in the last few days that interviewed around Jan 15th??

I read someone's post on the latest page that the applications are randomized per selection process and that it doesn't matter when you interviewed but I am anxious. I am a second-time interviewer and last year I interviewed on Feb 15th only to get waitlisted. As someone who is in-state, 3.7 GPA from IU Bloomington, 33P MCAT, 3.8 GPA in my masters program, I will be very upset at getting waitlisted again or, God forbid, rejected 🙁

I know this isn't something they would probably tell us, does anyone also know if the class happens to already be full at this point and they are just waitlisting people?

Congrats to all who got in, and best of luck to the rest!

I interviewed Jan 9th.... no word yet. Read my previous posts on this thread about the email I got. Other than that it has been completely silent for me.... the waiting sucks.

To be fair, today is President's Day, so I'm not sure any mail gets delivered. I was interviewed on January 9th, so I'm also anxiously awaiting some hopefully good news.

USPS doesn't deliver today; President's Day is one of their official holidays. I interviewed after 1/9/13 and am waiting for an official decision, as well, but I received an email this afternoon inviting me to IU's Second Look on April 5. We should be getting decision letters tomorrow. 🙂

Has every accepted applicant been invited to the Second Look? The email mentioned only a few dozen spots available.

Are you trolling? You made the account today and have only one comment.

I got that same email, made me wonder a bit.
