Nope, no class ranking and true Pass/Fail! In fact, even if you fail an exam, you can retake it multiple times and it doesn't show up on the transcript at all (although I'm not sure this has ever happened). This definitely reduces stress. I can't imagine how medical school would be anywhere where the medical sciences were based on honors/high pass/pass/fail. It seems that would really destroy class cohesiveness and make medical school much less enjoyable.
As a side note, there was a lecture a few months back on how memory and capacity to learn is highly dependent on stress level. I can honestly say that my retention of material has only benefited from the pass/fail system. I sense that everyone else also works extremely hard, and Hopkins students seem to fare quite well.
Whether you pick Hopkins or decide on another school, I would most highly recommend attending a medical school where you can learn in a stress-free environment. Competition during the first few years of medical school, I think, I can do nothing but hurt. Step 1 and all the other institutionalized parameters, and hopefully your true desire to learn medicine and become the best physician you can, will make you work hard.
Follow your heart and good luck!
