What do you guys think about sending Hopkins an update letter? I am going to write something up this weekend to send to schools that I already interviewed at, but I was thinking about fixing it to send to schools that I haven't heard back from. Is this seen as a good thing, or are updates mostly meant for after the interview? Is Hopkins a school that likes this, or are they just annoyed by getting more material to have to read over?

From what they mentioned at my interview day, they don't add additional material to your file. They didn't seem too receptive to it.

The only thing I can add is I recently had another publication accepted, notified them by email, and they acknowledged it. This is prior to interview. So perhaps in specific situations (new publications or awards) this would be acceptable.

Thanks for the input. I will probably hold off on the update then unless something more significant happens.

Wow, when I sent them an update about 2 accepted publications, they emailed me that they don't accept updates. 😡

Weird. I'll paste what they said to me:

"Good Afternoon:

Thank you for writing and for the additional information."

So, I guess technically they didn't specifically SAY they are adding it, but they also didn't tell me they don't accept updates.

I bet it varies based on whoever in the office ends up opening the email. I actually had called them before I sent them the update, and the person who answered the phone said they would take it. So maybe a different person ended up opening the email... They really should get their rules straight lol.

Yea, you're likely right -- that's not good though.

I was surprised to be honest (not about JHU) - even UCLA accepted my update even though you're not supposed to send one pre-secondary (UCSF did not however). I basically took a chance considering that the likelihood of getting an interview at either is minuscule since I'm an Canadian applicant.

I hope Hopkins sends more II!! In addition to the School of Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health is AMAZING~! Took a visit there last year; mind was blown away by just the electric intellectual atmosphere that is Hopkins Health Sciences.

Although I will never forget a quote by a friend who was accepted by Hopkins after she visited last year:

"I felt like I was gonna get shot there." LOL

While the neighborhood surrounding the medical campus might be a little rough, the medical campus itself is quite safe at any time of the day or night. Streets are well lit and frequently patrolled by Hopkins security. Many of the buildings are connected underground or by skywalks so there is no need to actually get on the street to move from building to building. I've felt very safe on campus so far.

Submitted 9/24. Complete 10/1. Interview Invite...we'll have to wait and see. This is such a reach for me.

Did you get a complete email? Submitted 9/17 and nothing from Hopkins yet...

I have been checking the status page on JHU website. It showed the submission date. Then below that, the date for being complete. I did not get an email though.

Is there a separate status page, or are you just going to the application page? If it's on the application page, did the line for being complete only show up once you were complete?

The completion date is on the same application page, and that line only shows up when you're complete.

I submitted 9/19 but don't have the complete line below on my app page yet. Should I give them a call?

I submitted 8/27 (with all LOR received) and received the complete 10/1.

Interview invitation today.

3.98/42R ivy

so grateful.

Can anyone who's interviewed this year comment on the interview day/format/level of stress?

And WOW @ DrDomo...I'm literally jaw-dropped at your stats.

You start the day off with presentations then lunch and tour. Then you hang out in this room with the rest of the interviewees and the student interviewers. You'll be randomly pulled out for your interviews. 2 interviews ( 1 faculty (open file), 1 student (closed file). The interviews were very stress free! The tour was really thorough, the new education building is amazing! I left with a great impression of the school, I absolutely loved it. Good luck to everyone else interviewing!

So what's the difference between Submitted and Completed? If your status does not change from submitted to completed does that really mean you are rejected, or was that just a joke?

Submitted just means you've submitted your secondary. Completed means they've checked your application and verified that it's completed. It takes about a month (give/take depending on when you submitted) to go from submitted to completed. It has nothing to do with acceptance/rejection. Everyone has to be completed.

Hmm, that's weird because my application was submitted July 6th. I received an email that said thank you for submitting your secondary and I assumed that meant it was complete.

They send a separate complete email...I got one 2 weeks ago

I guess I'm not complete then either. I am marked as "Submitted" on the website (9/22) but have not received a complete email.

How long between submission and complete??

II today!!!

Congrats! 👍 Looking forward to having you visit us.

Yes, it does take Hopkins awhile to sort through applications and mark them as "Complete" (anywhere from several weeks to over a month, apparently..), but rest assured that there are still months' worth of interviews to be handed out. It's not that rare to get an interview months after submitting an application.

That said, if you submitted your application >2 months ago and still haven't gotten any "Complete" notice, then it doesn't hurt to send a quick, polite email message to check on your status. I found the Hopkins admissions office very friendly and responsive last year, but of course they're also very busy. Keep it simple, keep it sweet.

And feel free to hit me with any questions about Hopkins/Baltimore. Happy to answer.

Thank you for the input. I did send a short polite email. I think the hold up with mine is the fact that I retook the MCAT July 27th so they did not receive that score until Aug. 28th. So to them I guess I am actually with the group of people who submitted Aug. 28th rather than July 6th.

I have decent GPA and MCAT score without leadership experience. Is leadership experience mandatory for admission to JHU's MD program?

Every applicant is different, so there is no right or wrong way to get into Hopkins (or any other medical school, for that matter). That being said, I think that Hopkins really values individuals who are very passionate about what they do - who want to take charge of bad situations and make real, meaningful improvements in people's lives. This often involves being a leader - whether in the clinic, in the research lab or the academic environment, in volunteer or charity organizations, and so on. My class is extremely diverse in terms of career backgrounds, academic track records, and geographic regions, but I think that one thing that many of us have in common is our desire to think big and to use our medical education to change our patients/communities/country for the better.

Bottom line: Be real, be passionate. Med schools accept people, not resumes.

This is excellent advice and I'm sure it applies to many schools.

I've seen you ask this exact question in so many threads, same idea for all schools. Holistic perspective of the applicant: leadership helps, but won't necessarily be the straw that breaks the camel's back

Has anyone read, or plan to read "Unaccountable"?

Now I do, haha
Lol, I figured I wasn't the only Hopkins hopeful that has heard about the book. I have my copy but I'm afraid if I start reading it right now I might avoid my current course work. So I guess I know what I'm doing during winter break.
