RE: Scholarships

It's my understanding that Sinai awards 5-6 full merit scholarships to entice those people to choose Sinai every cycle. Other than that, I know my finaid is also called a "scholarship"...I'm pretty sure it's not merit based but the odd thing was that it's quoted at a much higher rate than similar schools that I requested finaid estimates from when I applied. If everything is need-based, then I'm not sure why I'm getting so much money at Sinai....

Anyhow, just anecdotal evidence. But apply to finaid and see what you get - I'm paying even less than what it would cost to go to a state school at Sinai.

Based on what I was told during the interview day, I would pay considerably less at Mount Sinai than I would in-state in Illinois. That being said, I'm comparing costs to those in Texas...which isn't really fair, but that's how I'm having to choose.

When do we send in the financial aid stuff? Also how.

Congrats to all those that have been accepted. Can anyone give me a brief profile of their stats or perhaps a range?

Me neither! LOL

But just to comfort whoever asked the question: My stats are not nearly as good (specially my MCAT) and I did get accepted. So there is hope to everyone! 😀

But yeah, just take benjamins and whatever numbers average with his to get Sinai's average numbers, that's your range, haha

Damn. I am impressed. Your MCAT is good. 🙂

Godd luck.

EHizzle, I sent a message to you to see which one you were!

Also, everyone at the interview was frickin' awesome. Numbers are whatever. It was a freak occurrence and/or I'm a robot.

Anyone have an idea when second-look is? And do they help with travel? West Coaster here.

Any Canadians hear the good news so far? I'm extremely happy but I need some guidance regarding processes of visa and finances. It would be great to hear from someone else who's in the same boat. PM me if you like.

Haha I don't see one...but I was the only person that day from down south, so hopefully that makes things more clear!

Revisit was Apr 20 weekend last year, I'd imagine it to be around that ballpark last year.

I strongly recommend that if you were accepted to come to Sinai's revisit. Not trying to brag here, but several first years changed their minds after Second Look and ended up coming here (esp when they were choosing among NYC schools).

Also, anecdotally, this is still extremely early in terms of Mount Sinai's admissions. We like to joke that the people who get interviewed before Christmas don't tend to come here as much because they're the ones with the 40+ that end up going to HMS, Hopkins...etc. If you got interviewed before Christmas, you're probably in the strongest pool and there's still plenty of chances for acceptances! (of course, it would be awesome if you love Sinai now...it's just two years of seeing this process the people who were accepted/interviewed now get wooed by other schools as the cycle goes on 😛)

How late are interview invites sent for Sinai? I'm assuming that you still have a chance of acceptance no matter how late you interview..or maybe I am just being too optimisitc ?

Any recent interview invites from here? Complete late August and haven't heard anything...hoping it's not a rejection because I am in love with this school

I looked up my personal stats and I actually got an invite from Sinai almost exactly 2 years ago. I interviewed mid-January and was accepted two weeks later. I'd imagine it's pretty similar for the people getting invites around now.

The interview season goes till March (forgot exactly when, but it's in March), so as long as they're still giving out dates before that time it seems like you're still ok. I would say the invite window is definitely open till January at the very least.

Did anyone receive the formal letter of acceptance in the mail yet?

Is it even worth it to submit my secondary now to Northwestern? I really like the school, but I feel like it's pretty late in the cycle. I have eh okay stats for Sinai, I think... 3.96 cgpa / 3.93 sgpa / 34R / OOS.

hmmm...

Applying this late in the game will probably negatively affect your chances. Your stats are pretty close to their averages, so maybe it'd be worth it if you really like the school. When doing the secondary essays, just don't forget to change the name of the school from Northwestern to Mt. Sinai though 😉.

Hahah that would be pretty crucialll.... lol

From Northwestern to Icahn* 🙂

Wow. That's a lot of money. Just wondering, but do gifts like this affect financial aid usually? I ask because I remember someone saying in passing in another thread that Perelman should have good financial aid this year because they just got a good gift.

Second look can't come quick enough! Just read over my notes on the school after the interview and getting excited again!

AFAIK, donors can limit what their gifts are used for, like research or fin aid or a specific cause that they care a lot about. I think the NYT article mentioned that "Dr. Davis said the gift...would be heavily devoted to building research capability," so I expect a lot of it would go towards research. Can't imagine that Icahn would have specifically divided his donation though. At the same time, I know this school is eyeing the top 10 hungrily, and is aiming at least to be in the top 15 within the next few years, so I feel like they're going to heavily prioritize research. For those who interviewed this year, I'm sure they pointed the new research building to you - that's another one of Sinai's strong research ambitions.

We actually didn't even get the official notice from the school yet (it was pretty funny when we found out about this via NYT first)....but yeah, this is pretty crazy. I did a brief search of recent large donations, and I can't find anything surpassing $200 million other than Perelman. Really looking forward to the official announcement to us from the administration which will definitely be forthcoming in the next week.

Fingers crossed that they shower their students with scholarship money! That would make my decision to go here a no brainer. Looking forward to second look.

I recently visited this school when I was in the area for a friend's birthday (he's a 2nd year there). All I have to say is, I reallyyyyyyy wish I had applied, even though their average MCAT is above mine. Now I'm kicking myself for not even giving myself a shot 😡

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! It's an amazing school and right on Central Park--what more could you want? I am insanely jealous 😛

Does anyone know what second look at Sinai is like? Thanks!

Hi everyone. Am in my final year at Sinai. It is an awesome program. Feel free to msg me if you have any specific questions about it. My one unsolicited plug is that when evaluating schools you want to go to a school that is better when you left it than when you came in. Sinai is one of those types of places. And as you have read from previous posts, the student culture at Sinai is 2nd to none.

Good luck everyone.

Does anyone know what second look at Sinai is like? Thanks!

If you look in last year's thread you'll see some comments and feedback about Second Look.

Second look here is not very long, it's only from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon I think. Going off of this from memory, but when you come here there's a welcome reception with wine and cheese, where you'll get to meet a lot of current students and some faculty. Then we take you out to free dinner around the community (you got to choose which restaurant you want to go to beforehand), and then we (mostly MS-1s) go out with you to a bar where there's drink specials (unfortunately it wasn't an open bar last year) and then you can mingle with the fellow admits and also us. Last year we had it at the rooftop terrace of a bar in the UES, and that was really nice.

Saturday is filled with some lectures, hands-on activities (ultrasound, intubation, suture), and an activity fair? Something like that. I wasn't as involved on Saturday but I remember you did most of the "social" stuff on Friday afternoon+night and the "school" stuff on Sat. A good group of admits stayed till Saturday night and I think they organized their own stuff at the conclusion of activities on Sat afternoon.

It was a good time, I had fun leading a dinner group and the social afterwards.

Does anyone who interviewed recently know when the next round of decisions are going out?

At my interview they said before the holidays. (Interviewed late October)

Guys, I am sorry to ask this again, but did any of you who get accepted already received the official letter in the mail? I have some interviews coming up next week that I want to cancel since Mt Sinai is my top choice, but I did not want to cancel them prior to having my official letter. 🙁

No letter here (just checked the mail). Original email said 2-3 weeks tho...only been a week and a half.

Jessica told us before the holidays. I do not know if she meant thanksgiving or christmas.

Yeah, good point. I didn't realize that. It looks like people who were just accepted had about 1 month between their interview and their acceptance, so if I interviewed in late October it seems like it could plausibly be before Thanksgiving, but I don't want to get my hopes up. Anyway, usually "the Holidays" refers to Christmas, right? 😳

Thank you for your reply. I know they said 3 weeks but I was hopeful I would get it prior to my next interview... I guess I am just going to play safe and go to the interview! Thank you again!

Yep, I guess when they said 3 weeks it literally meant 3 weeks... 🙁 thank you for letting me know though! 🙂

Guys, I still don't get how I can check the status of my application. When I login I see:
"You submitted this application to Mount Sinai School of Medicine MD Program on 10/8/2012 8:08:00 PM. You can still work on any remaining parts of your application, but the application form itself is no longer available for editing."
Does that mean they haven't looked at my application yet? Am I looking at the right thing?

I'm pretty sure that is all there is to see, similar to Einstein's page.

Thanks for the answer. So then how should I know if they reject me or invite me for Interview? E-Mail? Phone Call? (No Status ??)
