2013-2014 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if they are receptive to LOI? I was complete end of September and havent heard anything since.

I'm not quite sure on the letter of intent. But I do know that they gladly take letter of updates. 🙂

Accepted!! Interviewed 12/5.

This is my dream school, so I'll definitely be matriculating.

Ahhh I interviewed with you! I think I'm gonna get waitlisted but we shall see. Congrats!! 🙂

And as the three month mark since my interview approaches, I'm still on tenterhooks about the final decision...

I know my student tour guide said that between interviewing and getting in, it was 6 months for her...but I'm really hoping it's not that drawn out for me.

I met so many great people that day, I'm sure you were one of them 🙂 I've got my fingers crossed for you👍👍

Aw how nice of you to say that! I loved that interview, such a great group of people!! 🙂

Does anyone know what the latest date is for post-interview decisions? How long after interviews does it usually take to hear a decision?

From the posts on this the forum, someone who interviewed 12/3 was admitted recently, and that seems like the latest date. Has anyone who interviewed later heard back?

I interviewed in late December. For those who interviewed after early December, I'm thinking early February is the earliest decisions might be released.

The admissions committee does not dole out acceptances in a linear fashion with respect to interview date. Rather you are scored by a 'not easy to understand ranking scale' and acceptances are given out to only those at the top while those at the bottom are cut (not sure if that last part is true as of the current date). Some people have reported not hearing back from Geisel until months post interview.
On another note:
After only a 3-5 day turn-around secondary submission-to-interview invite I was very surprised when hearing about the delayed acceptance process. However, I truly believe Geisel is very meticulous when examining applications for potential acceptance's, due to the in depth description of the review process by the admissions director at the beginning of the interview day.
Also, after learning about the numerous different kinds of review processes conducted by admissions committee's it seems that Geisel hass\ one of the more logical approaches. Having a set of members dedicated to studying and reviewing applications from specific schools ( Ivy Leagues, east coast, west coast etc) shows they care about the details (which I think is awesome). For example, at my school there are two 'Bio-chemistry B.S.' degree's one can obtain: a Biochemistry B.S. from the chem dept. and a Biochemistry B.S. from the Biology department. I think it is important to distinguish between the two when comparing GPA's of students with these two SEEMINGLY similar degrees (I believe only 3/70 graduating biochemistry majors from the chemistry department had a GPA>3.5). What I am saying is that although the wait to hear back sucks, I am glad they take the time to investigate the details =P.

Also a note to those preparing for the interview. Do not stay at the Sunset Motor Inn (although this may already be obvious for some of you haha) it was not very nice at all. It was very cheap, but spend the extra bucks for a slightly better accommodation. The iron did not work (and we all know how crucial an iron is the night before an interview) and the owner/manager kept telling me it did (when it did not), so I had to buy my own iron the night before my interview. The TV did not work, and the heater was kinda messed up, and the place was just not nice at all. I would suggest not staying here the night before your interview, as it will likely not give you a good experience of the area and/or a pleasant experience the night leading up to your interview. In any other situation I would say go for the cheapest place you can find, but the night prior to interview I would not suggest it.

Goodluck to all. Hope good news comes everyones way in the near future.

This is true. They explained the process at my interview too. However, my understanding is that these scores are decided on during committee meetings, and these meetings DO consider interviewees in chronological order when assigning a score. That's all I was getting at.

Oh indeed. Indeed. Sorry, I was not trying to correct you or anything. You want to know when the ABSOLUTE earliest acceptance round you could hear back would be by referencing when other on your interview day hear back (assuming someone from your interview day was at the top of the list)? I interviewed on Nov 19 and someone from my interview day heard back on the morning of Dec. 20 (earliest). Hope that helps.

Thanks! That is what I was hoping to find out from this thread -- the absolute earliest date.

And yeah, I definitely agree with your other point, that the process of assigning one committee group to applicants from a particular school is a pretty unique and respectful way to consider applicants. Not sure if you're already in -- if so congrats! If not yet -- fingers crossed for all of us!

I stayed there for one of the two nights I was there, and I had a pleasant experience. Everything worked fine, the room was clean and tidy. The only problem I had was that they didn't offer the free continental breakfast as advertised. Granted, had I the money to spend, I would've gotten a room closer to campus, but on my budget, it was fine.

My friend who went to Dartmouth for undergrad heard back from Dartmouth Medical School 2 weeks after she interviewed. She interviewed in late-October in 2012, and she heard back early- to mid- N0vember. I don't know how likely this is is to happen though this year, with the AMCAS delay & increase in the number of applicants...

I want to hear back from Dartmouth...

Just interviewed here yesterday! The experience definitely catapulted Geisel to the top of my list. I'm really hoping to hear good news :xf:

Survived the rejection pile for five months now, anyone have any idea what are my chances at this point? I know Dartmouth notify people fairly quickly once they decide you are not a fit for their school. Also, do the secondary portal update once the rejection comes through (in case the rejection email was lost or something...)

I don't think the secondary portal ever updates once you're complete. Didn't update for me post-II, post-interview, or post-acceptance, so I somewhat doubt it'll update post-rejection. Who knows, though - Sometimes adcoms are screwy.

Wonderful... lol. Really don't want to call the admissions to check if I'm still under consideration.

Just received an II from Geisel SOM! Secondary was completed on 7/5/13, so I'll just pretend they lost my file in the mail room for a while =)
Interviewing on either 2/27, 3/4, or 3/6
Congrats!🙂 Mind sharing your stats?

Frantically check email for II. Nope. Probably in spam folder. Nope. Application lost in garbage bin 7 months ago. Probably.

I was complete ~August 18th & received an interview invite January 24th (also 5 months), so don't give up hope! My stats were 3.8 overall GPA and 3.7 science with a 31 MCAT (11B,9P,11V). I did send them 1 short email update & a full letter update a week before the ii that included expressing my explicit interest in the school. If you haven't been rejected, I would say you definitely still have a shot, but if you can think of an update to tip the balance in your favor, that might be good too.

Thank you so much for the advice! May I ask where you sent your letter? Did you attach a PDF and send it in an email to their admissions email address?

Honestly, I think you LOI and receiving your interview invite was just a coincidence. I think the update letter is a good idea (updating them with activities, a job, research, volunteer etc). The reason that I say the LOI might not carry much wait here is because I called the office and was told that though they will receive an LOI it has no weight on who they decide to give an ii too. I think an update letter will make some difference though. Congratulations on your ii! 🙂

When I read your comment I imagined someone calling me on the phone to tell me I was waitlisted. I think that'd be kinda mean haha.

Waitlisted over email, interviewed early September. Probably withdrawing from waitlist though.
Haha no I just didn't know if it was by snail mail or email! Sorry for the confusion

Yes -- attached a pdf to an email the admissions address.

Also, in response to the comment about the LOI & ii being a coincidence -- this may very well be true. Out of 4 short paragraphs, I limited my interest in Geisel to only 2 sentences. The other paragraphs were updates.

Thanks for the info! I wrote three paragraphs: (1) I'm still volunteer, (2) I joined a cool service program this summer, (3) short Geisel interest paragraph.

Does anybody know if pretty much all Dartmouth College alumni/undergrads get an interview here?

I have a bunch of friends who went to Dartmouth. 2 of them got interviews, 1 of them didn't. Take it as you will.

Can I ask what the time period was between when you sent your update and received the II. I also sent an update and I'm wondering how long before they read it and all that good stuff..
