2013-2014 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Look I am not going to apologize for quoting what Richard Wallace sent in the acceptance email. It was a beautiful statement from an amazing man that touched me and most likely others that got the letter. If you interviewed you know how good of a person Richard Wallace is and I thought his comment was worth sharing. Second, this is an anonymous forum on a school specific thread where something like this is appropriate.

Conflict of interest much?

The only Wallace I'm interested in is Rasheed.

Now that I've revealed my tarheel allegiance...anything from the acceptance letter is really only appropriate for the eyes of people who have been accepted. Posting anything from the acceptance letter, regardless of the sentimental value you or anyone else may assign to it, will come across as rubbing it in the face of anyone who has yet to be accepted, either to Duke or anywhere else for that matter.

Also, as this is a school specific forum, it might be a good idea to start and develop a rapport with people. The people on this thread may be your classmates someday - probably not a good idea to walk into school with a bunch of people who don't like you already.

It's acceptance day on a game day at that. Today is about those who were blessed enough to get an offer. It's our time to celebrate. Like I'm crying at my computer screen and running around in my boxers like a maniac. I am sorry if I forgot to "censor" myself a little. You are viewing an acceptance thread to one of the most competitive schools in the country on the acceptance day and you're complaining about people celebrating? Of course it's gonna be crazy for a little bit. Damn, let us simmer down. I literally had just got the email. Lmao. Give me a break.

Yes, it's appropriate to the people who have been accepted. Thanks. That's the point I was trying to make.

I think people are complaining about you specifically.

After I got my first acceptance, I was overwhelmingly relieved that I would be going to medical school. Every other acceptance after that was "Oh, cool. I got into another school." At 18 acceptances, doesn't it just feel kind of...benign? You can only attend one medical school, you realize that right?

Go celebrate in real life, not on the internet. For all we know, you're a trollllllllll brah.

And we have seen it in our email. No need to share it with someone who hasn't or won't receive that email. That's the point I was trying to make.

can we go back to having conversation that is cheerful and makes waiting bearable for those of us who are hanging on to a last hope. it had actually been making time pass by faster.

+1 please. If you've been accepted, you should be partying!!!!!!!

This isn't an "acceptance thread" and today is not only about those "blessed enough to get an acceptance." Some of us aren't sitting on Harvard and Yale offers and raking in an unreal number of acceptances. Saying things like "it's our time to celebrate" gives no respect to those of us who have been anxiously waiting for this day, only to come up empty. You obviously are a talented and deserving applicant, but some of us would kill to have even one of the acceptances you do. Think about the other people who consider Duke their dream school but who don't get to celebrate today. Those people don't deserve to have the acceptance letter rubbed in thir face.

I didn't run anything in anyone's face. I simply posted a quote.

For the love of christ, if you said "I'm sorry, I'll be more mindful of these things" that might be the end of people attacking you man! Dude every thread you go into you've been pissing people off!!!! Just say "I'm sorry" even if you don't mean it, and let it be done.

GO TARHEELS!

Is all of this really worth it over a quote from Richard Wallace? It's really not that serious. My intention wasn't to rub anyone the wrong way and much, much, much worse has been said on SDN.

I think they're going out roughly based on interview dates, not last names, but i could be wrong

The thought of waiting until tomorrow to find out the bad news gives me angina.

Congratulations to everyone! While not lucky enough to get in here, GO DUKE tonight! I strangely hope that they reject me instead of another pity wait-list that doesn't have much hope of movement...

Watch the language man haha jk, I think the trend correlates very closely to alphabetical order so I'm thinking that's the order and either way, looks like I'm not getting in here...bummer but o well, someone's got to get rejected.

are we assuming all the acceptances are coming out today?

Good Luck to everyone waiting...I'ts gonna be gametime in a few hours. Make sure you root for Duke, maybe the med school gods will hear you!

Yeah seems like its over :/ Congrats to all those that got in!

Chins up people! It's not over till the fat lady sings...or in this case, an unfortunate email arrives

Great, my waitlist streak is getting longer (probably). Now I only have one more decision pending. I guess I am so talented in getting waitlists...🙁

Feeling pretty low, probably will have to reapply. Congrats to all those that got in.

To people (and one specific person) having a good app cycle, just relax and stop shoving your success in everyone's face. We are happy for you, but stop parading around as if you are special. Some people with better stats and a better application are not having nearly as much success. No, you don't have the best application this cycle.

There's many random reasons why people get accepted/ rejected that are outside our control. I can use myself as an example. Two top 15 schools (probably more) waitlisted me because I'm an international student. How do I know that? In a pretty rare moment of frankness, my interviewers actually told me when I emailed them. I had fantastic interviews at these schools and the interviewers kept saying "I hope you come here to XYZ." So after getting waitlisted, I was naturally surprised. I emailed them and they responded pointing to my international status. These schools matriculate only 1-3 international students in a typical year, so the competition is intense. But I do have a couple of top 20 acceptances, probably putting myself in the top ~5% of international students in terms of success. Do I parade around saying this? NO. Because I easily could have been in the other 95%. Anyways, just relax and stop talking about your acceptances. Please.

Welp, that's a wrap then, so sorry to all of us who didn't get in. I really hope you all still got into another school that you care about though. Congratulations to everyone who got in, rep those Blue Devils! This thread has been a great support for me, SDN <3

Don't give up hope until we get that WL/rej email. We don't know anything for sure yet. 🙂

Wow, you guys seriously need to relax. I was rejected to Duke as well but I am not pointing people out just because they were happy about their acceptance. I don't think @Espadaleader did anything wrong. It's one thing if he said "yay I got in, sorry you all weren't as fortunate because your application wasn't as good as mine" but he didn't. Chillax guys, I am pretty sure if you got an invite to Duke you're all most likely going to be a doctor so relax and enjoy the year before we all start.

I've been there. I'm a reapplicant and my first cycle was terrible. Who knows--something may come through for you at the very end, and if it doesn't, try again! Keep your head up and keep focused (easier said than done). Reapplying certainly gives you another perspective.

Hey, if they were really more selective in initial acceptances, do you think that'll mean more waitlist movement down the road?

That's the goal! My year there was no wait-list movement, so they are hoping there will be some movement this year.
For everyone that hasn't heard yet: please don't let this get you down. We don't give interviews lightly, so the fact that you were even considered means we saw something in you. You'll be great doctors. Don't give up!

That makes sense and probably allows Duke to control the class composition a little better.

Thanks for the positivity! This thread needs it.
