2013-2014 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Someone posed the exact same question I asked on the FB group and an admissions office worker gave the exact opposite explanation. She said that altering the order will cause the system to "reset" the day you submitted your preferences to when you last changed them.

On a related note...how are the campuses assigned? I have just been assuming people who got in earlier and submitted their preference list are assigned first and thus have a better chance of getting what they want.

Yeah, I was also under the impression that they were assigned according to when you made your list--according to a call to admissions, not sure who I talked to though, just whoever answered the phone.

Man, bro, duuuuuuuude. Check out the killer waves! They're gnarly.
Duuuuuuuuuude.... those waves man! lol

As far as campus preference/ranking/lottery, I called the admissions office and I was told that the lottery would take place in April/May. I guess everyone just tells you a different story. I say just rank them now and be on the look out! I have friends in Indy and at other regional campuses but def the best place to be is Indy since its the biggest city in the state. I anttended IUSM in Indy for grad school and it def is sweeter then all other campus altough the satellite campuses have their perks as well.

Where is the campus preference section located on the applicant portal? Do you have to establish IU network credentials first to access it?

Is there a confirmation email, portal status update, magic owl that visits you with a sealed envelope, etc. post-interview when your application is finally complete and ready for adcom review?
I'll answer my own Q... just got the confirmation email.

Just wanted to make sure: so even if you are placed in a regional campus, you have the option of completing years 3/4 in Indy, right?

Also does anyone have any additional insight on the regional campuses, besides what's posted on the websites? I missed the webinar and I only found the webinar ppt file for W. Lafayette. I appreciated the earlier feedback for Gary.

Right...but because the overall class size is increasing students will have to complete some rotations outside of Indy even if they opt to be in Indy for years 3 and 4. That information was included in post-acceptance information.
Yep they said up to 3 rotations, which isn't bad 🙂 Thanks for clarifying!

Looking for some feedback on an issue I'm having with the school. I'll try to be brief.

I got an II in September, scheduled for early November. I was asked to mail in those 3 documents, and I did (all in the same envelope) the same day I got the II. The admissions office sends me an email in December telling me they haven't received 2/3 of the required documents. It's a little frustrating but things get lost sometimes. It happens. I send in the 2 documents the same day they sent that email, back in the first week of December. It has now been 7 weeks since they received them and they still haven't processed them. I'm getting worried because people from my interview date are starting to hear back on final decisions.

Since the school does rolling admissions, I feel like my chances of acceptance are growing slimmer by the day because of a clerical error. Feels bad. At the same time, I don't want to call into the office and make it seem like I'm complaining or desperate. When I called back in December to confirm the problem, the woman said there was nothing they could do to hurry along my application, despite their mistake. Do I have ANY options at this point besides waiting it out? Maybe contact the head of admissions? The dean? I feel like I've been dealt a pretty bad hand here.

The same thing happened to me... interviewed 11/6 and notified 12/2 that they still didn't have my Dean of Students Eval even though I know my college sent it 7 weeks prior. I had it re-sent and it was processed by 12/20, so I would think your documents would be processed by now. If I were you, I would send your 2 documents in again. And it wouldn't hurt to give the Admissions Office a call again and explain the situation, although they may not be too helpful. I don't know anything about contacting head of admissions or the dean. Hope that helps!

If anybody needs the health form early, you can find it here... http://studentaffairs.iupui.edu/health-wellness/student-health/forms/index.shtml under "School of Medicine Immunization Packet." It's a physical form with the immunization info you need. Not sure why they don't just send us the link in the acceptance packet, but I needed to get mine early because I'm going to be losing my health insurance in a month. The only thing that has to be done after May 1 is a 2nd TB test.

Thanks Cosmas! It turns out that the missing documents just showed up as having been processed 3 days ago. I still haven't received a confirmation email, but I imagine that will come next week. I'm also sorry that happened to you. It's frustrating to have your application delayed by a clerical error.

After being accepted, did you guys receive only two emails from IUSM? I got the ones about Campus Preferences and Technical Standards. But someone told me to look out for more so I was wondering if anyone received additional emails.

Hm. I am not sure what she even meant by that because the statement isn't very clear. It kinda seems like the same statement, not the opposite? Did you mean "'reset' to the day...". I gleaned the statement I shared previously at the interview presentation.

Dr. Brokaw had also said the computer randomly selects students and gives them the first open spot according to the student's ranking. I assume this means that the campus selection process has nothing to do with the day you submit your preferences (unless you submit none by lottery day).

Hey all, recently received an interview from IUSM. Can anyone clarify something for me? All I need to send to them before my interview is:
The dean of students evaluation form
Letters of Recommendation form
That legal disclosure and consent form
A picture
And a $50 fee

Is that it? Please let me know. Interviewing on 2/12.

Yup!

Per IUSM email:

"We are writing to inform you of a recent change to our campus assignment procedures. Shortly following an offer of acceptance, accepted applicants will be instructed to create a campus preference list (all nine campuses must be ranked), which will be available in the Applicant Portal System. In the spring, accepted applicants who have submitted their campus preference rankings will be assigned via Applicant Portal System (computerized selection system) to a campus location based on the submission date of the campus preference roster and space availability. Additionally, a Second Chance Lottery program will be offered in the late spring for accepted applicants who desire a change of campus assignment. The Second Chance lottery allows one campus preference for possible reassignment based on current space availability (reassignments are not guaranteed).

Please note the Admissions Office is unable to track if an applicant has completed the campus preference portion of the portal. You will be permitted to update/change your campus preference ranking until notification thecampus assignments process has taken place. With exception to the accepted Early Decision and MD/PhD applicants, we do not warrant or consider petitions for a specified campus."

The bolded statement clearly indicates that when you submit the list does matter. That is why I was so concerned that rearranging the list would cause the system to "reset" my submission date to the most recent time I rearranged the list.

However, it also says that you are permitted to rearrange the list. It is pretty ridiculous that they don't indicate the consequences of rearranging the list if indeed it does really reset your submission date. Also, what do they mean they can't track if the list has been submitted or not? If they can't track that how can they track the order by which people have submitted the list?

IUSM really needs to be more transparent with this process!

Oh, gee. Yup, then it does appear to matter! They did not say that at interview day. It is not clear to me, either, if there are "consequences" to a ranking update... good luck with that, let us know if you figure it out!

If nobody has been waitlisted, then does that mean no news following an interview = waitlist?

How do you access the online portal? I didnt receive any info on that in my email.

Has anyone OOS gotten an acceptance or response yet? I had an interview early September, but still no response......

Anyone get any exciting news yet? As an OOS'er, I refuse to begin religiously checking the mailbox until someone IS posts an acceptance on here. For the sake of my mail, someone please have good news!

EDIT: Just me looking through the thread and posting that I need to chillout. Most mail seems to arrive later in the week.

I would love to get some news! Due to the weekend and President's day I would guess that they mailed letters today.

I am not sure if it is likely that I will find out this round. I interviewed on the 15th of last month.

I just received my acceptance in the mail this afternoon!!! I interviewed on January 15th, however I only live 30 minutes from the campus so I assume it's going to take a little longer for most people get theirs! Good luck to everyone 🙂

Accepted, too! *sigh of relief* Interviewed 1/8. I also live less than an hour away from the main campus.

Does your online status in the portal change once a decision has been made? Or do you just have to wait for the letter?

I interviewed on September 4th and as many on here I have still not heard anything but I have been accepted to two IS and a really nice OOS public school. Still though, I'd like to hear back from IU. How many more middle of the month committee meetings are there, does anyone know? I'm guessing one in March and one in April. My interviewer told me I had a great application, a great interview, and that he'd put in a good word for me but that there are a huge number of students so it'd be difficult (I'm assuming he talked about OOS applicants). Therefore, don't take it personally if you're haven't heard from IU yet. I just figured if I have such an early interview, I'd have great chances but apparently not. The only other OOS school that accepted me so far called me for an interview in February.

I got my letter today and my portal still says under consideration so I think you just have to wait for the letter!

yeah the student portal is about 1-2 weeks behind. You won't get any emails in regards to any acceptance, it will come slow snail mail. Also keep in mind that Indiana has been getting a lot of snow and it can delay the process. My friends who live up north got their letter on air about the 18 of January. I am in Miami and I had to wait till the 22 for my acceptance letter to arrive.

I also got a letter a week later from the new dean. You guys are right, about 5k people have applied to IU and only a limited number of interviews/acceptances can be made. I believe as long as you do not receive any rejection letter, you guys are still game. I know it is lame to say but remember..."no news = good news". I also suggest you guys reach out to the admissions office and/or send a letter of interests as well as stating any updates to your file.

Congrats to all who got accepted this round and hope to see you all August 7 and 8. If you guys have FB, please join the group as important information is constantly being disseminated: https://www.facebook.com/groups/605652959497432/

Keep blessed,

BBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! I just got the two emails!!! Someone please tell me this isn't a joke!!! No packet in the mail yet, but I'm in Minnesota. OOS, strong IS ties, Interviewed 1/8, reapplicant from last year, absolutely ecstatic. Quite certain that I'll be matriculating.

I'm overjoyed right now.

Do you know if sending a letter of interest is acceptable? I know they usually do not like phone calls or requests for application updates but I would be all in for writing a letter of interest. Interviewed in Oct. and still have not heard back.

When did you get a complete for review email? I interviewed on 1/15 but was complete for 2/14

I say write a letter. to be honest, what I did was just write an email to Karen Smart, and I attached a word document with all my updates and different things that I have been involved with since submitting my application. I did not see or hear anything about IU not liking updates on their website nor on interview day, unlike some other schools. So go ahead!!!

Does IU recommend laptops or are students able to use what they want? Is the campus PC or Mac friendly or do both work fine?

Maybe THIS will be the month! Interviewed 10/9 and still no word... 🙄

Best part about this upcoming notification on March 15..February only has 28 days so that's a couple days less we have to wait between this monthly update!

Has anybody heard anything regarding scholarships yet?

Hey I have not heard anything. Jose, the guy from financial aid office said next month they will start preparing financial aid packets. It sooooo annoying because I got into two other schools and they have send financial aid incentives. Blaaaaaahhhhh

Hey, you could always withdraw your position 😉

Do you guys think that people will be receiving letters today? It'd be a nice St. Patrick's Day surprise to get a letter today.

Assuming that they met on Friday the 14th, I would guess that they are sending out letters today and that they'll be received tomorrow. I live about 25 minutes away from the main campus. If I get a letter (fingers-crossed), I'll post ASAP.

I just called the admissions office and she told me that letters were mailed on Friday. I'm hoping today is my lucky day.

Good luck to you all waiting! Crossing fingers for you all!! May the luck of the Irish be with you all on this day! Cheers

Just called admissions office; they asked for my AMCAS ID # and looked it up. I'm still under consideration :/ ...which at best, I guess means that I could be wait-listed. Good luck to the rest of you all.
