2013-2014 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did everyone else receive an email about second look? I have not heard anything regarding whether or not I was accepted or not but I received an email asking about second look. What does that mean?

Just called admissions office; they asked for my AMCAS ID # and looked it up. I'm still under consideration :/ ...which at best, I guess means that I could be wait-listed. Good luck to the rest of you all.
I do not think that means anything though. I am pretty sure they tell that to everyone until they update the portal which is supposed to be behind by a week or so. But thats just what I understood from what I have read here. Good luck though!

I called them because I got the same email and they said it is because I have been accepted and that my acceptance letter was mailed on Friday, hope it means the same thing for you!

There was a small part of me that was hoping that was true. But, in the past forums it seemed to me that they would tell you your letter was on the way if you had been accepted. All hope is not lost.

I just received the same email.... I'm so confused:shrug:

Are you sure it was IUSM? I thought they didn't have an official "second look" day, but I would be glad to be wrong because I was hoping to meet some other '18ers!

On the Facebook group one of the admissions reps posted this about second look:

"IUSM's second look is by invitation only. At this time we are finalizing our schedule and location for this event. I can tell you that this year it will not be at the Indianapolis campus. We are excited to be showing off the other wonderful campuses we have to offer."

Since this was posted on the Class of 2018 page (in which everyone has an acceptance) this implies that not every accepted student gets to go to Second Look. I wonder how they decide who to invite? Maybe high stats people or OOS people they want to grab?

OR they target IS residents near the other non-Indi campuses? @crod14 , are you IS/near a campus?

Yay! I called and was told the same!!! C/O 2018!!! Good luck to all that are waiting to hear back!

I did and I'm oos but originally from Indianapolis, so I'm not sure why we got that invite.

For those of you with the second look e-mail, did the status on your portal change from under review to accdepted? Also, have you guys received the letters of acceptance yet?

To be honest I am miffed that they pick and choose who gets to go to second look.
I agree, but despite my disappointment I also understand why. With a class size of 340 + waitlisters, a second look day would be overwhelming. My speculation is that it may be geared more towards convincing the on-the-fencers (could tell through AMCAS? OOS? Non EDP? High stats?) When I called the admissions office, they said that the invitation list is determined each year by varying factors and "sometimes just plain luck." I was able to schedule my own little "second look days" through the individual campuses since I'm considering non-Indi locations more seriously.

So anybody hear anything yet? If sent Friday I would think some people would have received their letters by now

From the global health listserv:

Dual Degree Prepares Physicians for Global Health Careers

In 2013, the Eck Institute for Global Health and the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) launched a new opportunity for IUSM medical students to receive global health training through a Medical Doctor/Master of Science in Global Health Integrated Degree Program. This new academic collaboration is offered to medical students from any of the IUSM campuses who plan to practice medicine in underserved settings. Students take a leave of absence during their third year of medical studies to enroll in University of Notre Dame to join MS in Global Health students for a year-long program. Upon completion of the MS in Global Health degree, students will resume their medical degree studies with the option of finishing at the IUSM South Bend campus for their third and fourth years. The one-year MS in Global Health program contains science-centric training. It consists of 30 credit hours over two semesters and summer (fall, spring, and summer sequentially) involving a six-to-eight week field experience, usually in an international resource-poor location. All students complete a required capstone project, a scholarly report based on original research. Applications for academic year 2014-2015 are still being reviewed on a rolling basis. If a student is interested, it would be best to submit an application soon because of the limited number of slots for students of the MS in Global Health program. Those who are interested should go to the Eck Institute website http://globalhealth.nd.edu/masters/md-ms-integrated-degree-program/

Does anyone know if people have been rejected post interview or does IUSM wait until the end to send out rejections?? Have their been any alternate-listers yet or does IUSM only send out acceptances until the end?

At least on SDN it seems that very few post-interview rejections are given. No new acceptances were given out last year in April, but later in the month (~25th) the Indi lottery took place and even later (~29th) is when we got the alternate list email. BUT things have changed a lot with campus placement, and this year they told us we'd find out our campus placement in "early April." I really hope April 25th doesn't fall into "early April"...

Sooo, I emailed the guy who gave presentations on interview day because he told us there were monthly reviews of applicants up until June. Since there were a lack of acceptances posted on SDN after March in the years past, I was a little concerned. He told me that there are still two more review meetings left: one more in March and one April. They'll send out new acceptances following those meetings. After that, they start making the alternate list. Don't lose hope! He said those of us who haven't heard back still have a decent chance

....not sure if or how this timeline would affect campus placement.

Hey guys don't loose hope! I was Interviewed on November 13 and got my Acceptance Letter on January 22, 2014. So it took about a week after the committee meets and sends the letters out. As far as I know, they meet every month and send the letters on the 15th. I know of friends who got wait listed and didn't get in till a week before classes and all so there is always hope! As far as the second look, I did not get the email invite. Nonetheless my friend in Virginia got it. This year is at the Northwest Campus located in Geary, Indiana. I personally do not think it really is necessary to go or worth going unless you are invited and def want to check out the NW Campus. Additionally, they did say there was going to be reimbursement for travel expenses for the people who do decide to make the trip!

Are we to assume anyone who got an acceptance letter would have received it in the mail by now?

They don't really release their match list for some reason. Apparently if you want to see it you have to hunt it down in their library. I watched the live stream this morning though and a lot of them were announced. I'm wondering what percent matched.

After getting the second look email I called and I was told I was accepted but I still have not received my letter yet, and the online portal hasn't changed.

I think they don't post their match on line. Nevertheless, I saw the streaming on line and students matched into really great programs throughout the whole country. I believed everyone matched according to my fiends who are in second yr and were there

But dont they email us with forms to make our preference list?

After you're accepted, you will have to set up IU Network Credentials then wait a couple days for your credentials to be "processed" (its just another password you enter in AFTER you log on with your AMCAS credentials.) Then, you'll see that you're portal page has changed once you log in, you'll be able to arrange the campuses by preference under "Campus Assignment." They walk you through the steps via emails, its pretty simple.

Has anyone received the followup emails or snail mail acceptance letter since March 15?

OR they target IS residents near the other non-Indi campuses? @crod14 , are you IS/near a campus?
I am an OOS student that is from Arizona so I'm not sure why they selected me to invite to the Second Look but I am going and they are paying for my flight and everything.

Got my acceptance last Thursday (3/20)! I interviewed 2/12. Since it seems everyone always wants stats....

Applied twice, Non-traditional, in state, 26 MCAT (10/6/10/R), 2.98 undergrad GPA (with an upward trend😵... yes I know) 3.73 graduate GPA, a variety of clinical experience and few months research. Don't let a sub-par MCAT/GPA hold you back! Never give up!!!

Has your online portal been updated? Or have you received any additional emails?

Below is something I have been thinking about, and I'd be curious to know if anybody here has any insight into the issue or even speculation on what may happen:

We receive notification of which campus we are assigned on or around April 15th, and that date is well before the May 15th deadline for holding multiple acceptances. Let say lots of people who were on top of the application cycle (applied early to places and have multiple acceptance) are assigned Indianapolis (or any campus for that matter), but they choose not to attend. What happens to those vacancies at the campus to which they were assigned?

I really hope that IUSM can somehow go back and give that campus assignment to the next person who would have gotten it, but I am afraid it just remains open and is filled by people who are accepted after in May and beyond (off of the waitlist, for example) or by people in the second lottery. I think that would be pretty unfair because it essentially punishes people who were early in the process.

Hey there,

When that happened the year I was in the process, my friend who was put at a center campus actually ended up in Indy when spots opened. However, I also know someone who was accepted right before summer ended and she ended up in Indy. I guess we will never know!

Good point.

Well for those of you who go to Second Look, let us know if they present anything useful for information we would otherwise not have.

Hey there,

I went to the Second Look two years ago and it wasn't that helpful. They just talked about the school and stuff they offer at the Indianapolis campus. I actually ended up at a center campus so that is why I say it wasn't helpful to me. I am out of state and the crowd was pretty diverse. Free dinner!

Thanks for the insight! Sounds like the process isn't and has never been too transparent. I think the system has changed even since you were applying, so who knows what happens now.

You're right on that! Also, in 2015 they are starting with a new integrated curriculum! The entire curriculum will be changed!

Hey so if we are still under review at this point is there another chance we can get letters in the mail for acceptances or are we wait listed at this point? Haven't heard a word since interview in November.

Is anybody here in a situation where they may not come to IU if they get a regional campus? I am dreading April 15th because I may have to confront these thoughts...
I have another option and I've definitely considered going elsewhere if I'm at a regional campus.

Do you need to log in with your IU Credentials to make a campus preference or does the campus preference show up on
AMCAS Credentials side?

This isn't really an answer to your question since I actually chose the West Lafayette campus, but it was posted on the IUSM c/o 2018 facebook page today that the rumor of an April 15th campus placement date is false. Hopefully this doesn't mean we could be waiting til, oh, I don't know, April 30th to find out. 👎

I think you have to log in with your IU credentials; that was the only way I could access my preference list.

me have no idea why...but SDN changed all of my "me"s to "me"s in the following post:

me imagine you are referring to campus placement. It is a huge deal for people and me think the process should be more transparent. For example, me have a significant other in CA and things will get much more difficult if me am placed far from an airport (aka any center other than Indy). Where people are placed will change the course of their lives, so they deserve to know how it works. Naturally, many of us are frustrated because we want to be able to tell ourselves and others that we are "going to IU". Well it isn't that simple, and it sucks to pretty much not know which smaller school within IU you will be going to. Even though me am accepted to IU, me still have no idea where me am really accepted to for the first 2 years. Not knowing results in mental/emotional/logistical issues for people.

It is also a big deal as far as opportuniteis go. me was just speaking with a current M2 freind and he said being place at a regional center its a disadvantage if you want a competitive specialty because you wont have access to high quality research opportuniteis at Muncei or Terra Haute, for example.

Its also frustrating to see an admissions rep say the new system is more fair then turn around and read about how an accepted OOS student was given 50% tuition and top choice preference (Indy). Doesn't seem fair to use campus placement as a bargaining chip.

Hahahaha it is pretty funny reading, moderators are having a hay day with today's shenanigans... but your frustration makes sense. Current students have told me that the IUSM system is ambiguous, but once you learn where your campus placement is, it gets a lot easier. Trying to work on patience here, but Northwest campus is my first choice, so I could commute from Chicago... a little better chances of getting my first choice than someone with Indi. I feel ya!

Also, it seems to me that the April 15th is simply from interview day when they said "you'll know campus placement by mid-April!"

Are you from Indiana? There's an airport in Evansville, and a shuttle to/from IND at Bloomington and Lafayette. Terre haute is not a bad drive from IND. Gary is close to Chicago Midway and would be cheaper to fly into from California.

you

All that to say that the anxeity and neurotic posts on the FB page are completely understandable, and it is fueled by the fact that nobody can give a straight answer.

I agree that the lack of straight answers is frustrating. The difference between looking for an apartment on 4/1 and 4/30 can be pretty significant in a place like Bloomington where thousands of undergrads are snatching up apartments throughout the spring. As of today, my impression is that we're not hearing about placements until the end of April (based on those facebook posts). I hope it's not later than that.

I'm not hating on "front row kid". Someone's gotta ask the tough questions.
