2013-2014 Northwestern University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The link they provided me in the secondary email keeps going to the same page. how the heck am i supposed to put in my essays if they won't let me into the website?!!!!!!! annoyed right now
Try a different browser. And, generally, read the thread to see if your question has already been answered 🙂

I tried everything before I posted. It still isn't working.
Oh, I apologize.
I have just logged into my Northwestern secondary from my phone - this is not to advise you to submit your secondary using your phone, I just wanted to check if this is a site-wide glitch nonspecific to you and I only have my phone with me. Well, it's not a site-wide glitch. If your problem persists by tomorrow morning, you should probably call them.

Also, if you haven't tried it yet and different browsers don't work for you, try cleaning your cookies.
I have had the same problem with Firefox, but was able to log in with IE.

Thanks for the helpful feedback, everyone (re: my question about use of humour). I went super subtle. We'll see how it goes... 🙂

Ahh, I hope I didn't get passed over. Complete 08/09/13...interviewed here last year and would love a second shot. Great school.

I can't tell you anything about your chances (in fact, you should open a "What are my chances" thread rather than ask the same question in multiple school-specific threads), but the thing is, it's not only about the numbers. There is a lot of "numbers talk" on SDN simply because numbers are easy to compare. Unless you have terribly low stats (which you don't), you may have a chance at most schools if you have good ECs and LORs and a good personal story which you can tell really well.

Also, the vast majority of schools (except for Vandy and UC schools, as far as I know) don't screen for secondaries, they send them to everybody. You can find this information in MSAR or on school web sites. Pre-secondary screening is actually is good thing, as it saves you secondary fees, which are substantially higher than primary fees.

I feel like you guys would know more about my issue than asking on the other thread. I wanted some practical adivde since obviously a 30 is low to all of the 35+ that are so common on this thread.

I didn't mean to criticize you. Neither did I mean to brush you off or something 🙂 It's just that opening a WAMC thread could be more productive. Most of the people in school-specific threads are applicants who are as clueless as you are. Even the current students can't tell you whether you're competitive for their school - except for, maybe, mentioning someone in their class who has your stats. But that person is not you, and a lot more goes into consideration than stats. Even good stats can only take you only so far; you're by no means guaranteed to be accepted even at schools whose average MCAT and GPA are below yours.

Now, a WAMC thread could give you a general idea whether you're competitive for a certain tier of schools. But to get any useful advice, you'll have to disclose a lot more than your stats.

Personally, I would first consult MSAR for school-specific MCAT and GPA percentiles - and I wouldn't apply to schools whose 10th percentile numbers are higher than my numbers. Now, you can always take a chance and apply anyway - but this is your decision and your money (unless you're eligible for FAP - then apply away 🙂).

No problem. I appreciate the understanding response. My application isn't even verified yet so thats a double whammy 🙁

1. For the coping skills essay, is it necessary to talk about a particular situation faced or can it be a list of strategies.
2. Are friends, yoga, cooking good coping skills to write about.

I just made a list and explained how they help me cope--although I could see how talking about a specific situation could make a good essay (idk if they give you enough room though for that). And, yes those sound like great things. I wrote about singing, art, and flute. I think they want to see that you have other nonacademic interests

I don't know if this is true but I heard that feinberg doesnt really favor/like students from the university of illinois. Does anyone know how many uofi students usually get in per year? Also does feinberg favor IS over OOS??

According to the MSAR a few years back, their class was 77% OOS. Nothing on UofI though.

is there any advantage to interviewing early here at Feinberg?

Has anyone interviewed and if so can they comment on what the panel interview was like? Just want to know what to expect. Looking forward to having some awesome conversations with some of you on Wednesday! 😀

The panel was actually kind of fun, it was interesting to get to know the other applicants who were interviewing with you and hear their answers to different questions. None of the questions were too difficult, and everyone got different questions so it didn't feel like a competition. At the end of the interview, we had to solve a problem together, so the interviewers could get a sense of how you work with others, which is a really important part of the Northwestern curriculum. Overall I really enjoyed my day at Northwestern, it was pretty relaxed so don't stress out about the panel. Good luck!

Thanks for such a helpful post! Looking forward to meeting you Amba!

Northwestern doesn't screen but the secondary often tends to get routed to spam folders, so chances are it might be there.

What does the status page say/show after you submitted?

I emailed Northwestern and they said they hadn't received my secondary yet, even though I submitted 2 weeks ago.

Fell in love with this school from writing the essays lol
Am I late if I submit this tmr?

You're definitely not late. They only started sending secondaries out end of August I think. I turned my secondary in only 2 weeks ago and got an ii today

Which university of illinois? I go to uiuc and for what it's worth, a friend of mine got in to feinberg from here last year. I doubt undergrad has much influence versus your overall app. I wouldn't sweat it.

So you're from UIUC? Are your initials ME, by any chance?
