Interviewing Monday but a few questions

Could you give insight on how a typical interview day goes?

And I've heard the school changed to MMI last year. Is this true or is it still a traditional format?

Thanks!

Traditional interview format; we haven't changed to MMI.

First, a higher-up at the school has a small presentation.

Then, you have two interviews: one with an alumnus, M4, or faculty member, and the other is obligatorily with a faculty member.

Finally, M2s tour you around the building, eat lunch with you, and answer any questions you might have.

Small-pooled just now! Complete WAY back on 8/1 😉

Show me some love, CMS!

anyone know of a portal or e-mail to send update letters? small-pooled yesterday 9/18

from the small pool email:

"Please note additional information or letters of intent may not be submitted until an invitation to interview has been extended."

Small pooled today. Anyone know the likelihood of that turning into an Interview Invite? I scanned this thread and a lot of people said they received an interview the day after.

I was complete in october, small pooled in december, and got an interview invite in feburary (with an acceptance two weeks later), so you're fine.

Could be now, could be later. For the 2011-2012 cycle, I was small-pooled in November and interviewed in April.

Shout out to all those dapper interviewees I saw in our anatomy lab Monday! If anyone has questions regarding the school, feel free to message me (I'm an M1 here). Good luck everyone!!

just rescheduled my interview to October 21st, I hear back from my top choice school before than so we'll see...

I received my secondary here 5 weeks ago. Would it still be worth submitting, or does it look bad if you submit this late? Thanks for your answers.

I want some love, Rosy Franklin!!

For any who were considering, by the way.. I sent an 'In the Area' email as I'm going to be in Chicago anyways in a couple of weeks, but they were not receptive - understandable but still sad :/

second time applicant, was interviewed and waitlisted last cycle and didn't get in..can any people who applied twice and got in the second time speak about the likelihood of getting an interview again?

If you're deadset on going to medical school this year, you'd best submit that secondary TODAY. They don't look at when you got the secondary, but they do look at it once it's been submitted; they have >10,000 applications to sort through and the minutia just doesn't matter that much.

It's impossible to say. There is, however, someone in the M1 class who was interviewed two years ago and wasn't accepted but reapplied.

I would say that from a personal view, however, that unless your application has changed for the better significantly since your last cycle, it's less likely you'll get an interview this time around; you're still the same applicant they waitlisted.

I think the 8/2 folks had been passed over altogether. My rough guess is that the school has certain rules other than the chronological order in assigning applicants to batches. If this is correct, later-date folks should not be worried... you are not forgotten and will be reviewed at some point.

Anything beyond "they will review your application at some point in the cycle" doesn't have any basis in reality.

For those that had already interviewed, do you know if there is a place where we could leave our book bag on interview day? I have a flight soon after and would rather not pay for another night at the hotel just to leave a backpack there 😳

There's a closet in the interview holding room - the place where you sit and wait for your interviewers to come get you.

Alternatively, most hotels will let you leave a bag in their lobby without having to pay for the room for an extra night.

I am interviewing on Monday. Can someone describe the interview day for me?

Is it an open / closed interview ? (What info do they have?)
The day is 8:30 - 2:00pm, but what time is the actual interview?

Thanks

Here you go. The interview is semi-blind. I'm reasonably certain they have everything but your MCAT and GPA.

Another Monday interviewee! See you there!

Thanks. The "holding room" sounds a little bit intimidating 😱

I will definitely look into that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Awkwardly sitting in the lounge (cafetria?) an hour before the office opens .... Hooray for red eye flights... I feel like a gunner already!

But then you surely won't be late 🙂. Good luck!

Lol gunna style! You're going to rock it ; )

did anyone stay at the ramada inn and fly into O'hare airport? Was the cab really expensive?

If you used American Taxi and reserve by saying Rosalind Franklin, it comes out to $46 from O'hare.

Is there a rental car company at the airport that will rent to someone under the age of 25? I'm not too thrilled about spending money on a cab when it would be cheaper to rent a car. If anyone wants to split a rental car with me that would be ideal. If there isn't a rental option, would anyone on SDN like to take a cab with me from the airport to Rosalind Franklin on September 29th for the 30th interview day? I would really appreciate it. Feel free to PM me.

Don't worry, if you get accepted, that feeling will subside about, oh, day 3 of school...?

Thanks! Do I need to call a night in advance to reserve?

I did in advance. They give you the quote and such. When you arrive at O'hare, all you do is call with your confirmation number and they pick you right up!

A lot of companies will let you rent, but you're going to be tagged with a min. $25 underage fee. Also, extra taxes and fees if you want insurance coverage, as well as gas. I would just get the American Taxi for $46 (Possibly split to make it cheaper) from O'hare to North Chicago.

Just an interview recap for people who may be interested. Overall, interview here went well. My interviews were very conversational and just typical questions such as why medicine and explaining stuff of my app. Some ethics questions here and there, as well as some healthcare questions. 2 one-on-one interviews, with a possibility of a 3rd (Not a bad sign if you get a 3rd interview. My 2nd one, my interviewer had a meeting so I was excused early which I think was the reason why I got a 3rd interview).

RFU is really big on interprofessional teamework so be sure to read up on that. I really like the concept too. Starting from the beginning, you interact with other professional students such as pods or PTs.

Area isn't mad. Close enough to downtown to visit on a weekend or even at nigh, especially if you have a car. Facilities seemed fairly clean and nice, although it did look a little old. They are having construction on a new building.

Hospitals are all spread out so that might be a hassle but it is nice that you get a breadth of experience as the hospitals are located in various areas ranging from inner-city to affluent community.

Overall, really nice program and school that I would be more than happy to attend. They say decisions will be out in 4-6 weeks but hoping that I hear back something on the 15th! 😛 Hope this helps out any future interviewees and good luck everyone!

Thanks for all the info! I interview tomorrow, so this gives me a good idea of what to expect. One quick question, what time did the day end? Glad you hear you enjoyed the program, good luck!

Can anyone tell me if interviews occur in the morning/first part of the day, or afternoon?

Day ends around 2 o'clock.

Interview is in the morning (from 9-12). You wait in a common room with other interviewees and wait for your interviewer to come grab you. There's less interviewers than interviewees, thus the large chunk of time set aside for interviews. There will be a lot of waiting so be outgoing and get to know your fellow applicants!

Thanks, joonage!

If anyone is interviewing on the 11th and might want to split a cab, rental car, or hotel send me a PM!

Thanks, Joonage for the American Taxi recommendation! Worked out great

I'm interviewing on the 9th and I'm older than 25. If there's anyone who wants to split a rental car, I'm getting the old folks rental rate, I'm getting it through Costco, and I'm covered by my own insurance, so the car rental should be about as cheap as it gets. Fair warning: I learned to drive in Portland, Oregon, and this is us:

So I'm a little apprehensive about driving around a city as big as Chicago - when I drove around Philadelphia, I literally thought we were going to die pretty much the whole time. Nonetheless, if you're feeling particularly frugal and brave, feel free to PM me.

That was absolutely amazing! LOL My mom lives in Portland, seems accurate lol Wish I got the interview so I could ride share with you ; ) Go kick butt!

Small pooled right now!!!
Application complete on 8/6.
How long does it usually take to be invited to an interview after the small pool email?
I am so excited! I would love to go to this school.

There's no pattern. Two years ago, I was complete in September, small-pooled in November, Invited to interview in mid-April, and accepted in early May.

If they feel you're right for an interview, you'll get an interview. If they don't feel you're right for an interview, you won't get an interview. Relax. It's out of your hands.

If they feel you're right for an interview, they'll invite you as soon as possible. Remember: 10,000 applications yearly means that things might seem out of order to you, especially since approximately 1% of all applicants will report in on SDN and even fewer will put up all of their applications. I guarantee that someone who was complete on 8/2 received an interview; unfortunately, it just wasn't you. Hold tight.

I can't emphasize this enough. Get to know your fellow interviewees. I'm good friends with a girl I met at my RFUMS interview, and had I not been willing to interface with people on my interview day, I'd have no idea who she is.

At EVERY interview you go to, get in the habit of taking an interest in every single person you meet.

Getting small-pooled doesn't guarantee getting an interview...
