It's okay. I have a bad cGPA from when I did my bachelors that I've been working on recovering. Some school look at last 50 credits, others have a hard limit on cGPA. I was .01 below their minimum for secondary screening.

Damn, who knew a one week delay from amcas would cause a huge delay from other school!

I would gladly give you that difference for 1 pt on the MCAT. Lol.

I'm not sure where RFU cuts off in particular, but I know that most people think 8 is the magic number for screenings but also that 10 is what you want in each section. Most of the schools I called with this kind of question were nice enough to answer -- worth a shot, 🙂.

RFUMS doesn't cut off at 8. A non-URM at our school got in with a 6 VR, though everything else on his app was stellar.

I'm looking for a little advice on the "life in discovery" prompt. I'm a reapplicant and submitted my primary to RFU last year, but not the secondary. One of my most meaningful experiences in research from last year responds indirectly to this question, and I didn't include it in my primary application this year.

If I tweak it to respond more directly to this question, do you think it is okay to include? I don't want to be perceived as lazy, but re-reading it, the idea seems perfect.

If you didn't complete a secondary, then the RFUMS staff didn't even look at your application. You're fine.

We're about 40 miles north of the city in an area with very little in it. It's definitely not a city. We stay here for the first two years and most people move into Chicago for rotations in third year, but some (very few) do the "North Track", which keeps you north of Chicago.

Insofar as the school is concerned, it's a pretty normal med school with one exception: We don't have an affiliate hospital, so clinical rotations occur at any number of hospitals, including Mount Sinai, Cook County/Stroger, Masonic, and Christ Hospitals. Pro? Varied experiences. Con? Lots of travel required for rotations and huge variance in their difficulty.

The curriculum is not systems based. Normal physiology happens in year 1, and abnormal physiology happens in year 2.

Has anyone actually received a secondary here yet? I cannot quite tell.
 
Better question first is to find out when secondaries were sent out last year. That is what I would like to know if anyone has this information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The first "secondary received!!1!11!" post on SDN from last year was on 29 June 2012.

No secondaries yet as far as I know. The thread will probably blow up a bit when they come out.

👍 I agree. I wish EVERY school screened. I'm not a big fan of wasting time writing out all of these essays and shelling out another $100 at a school that I'm not even sure is interested in the slightest in my application.

If I had received my Rosalind Franklin secondary, I would have submitted today. Anyone want to venture a guess as to why 😉 ?

Are we sure they screen prior to secondary? The sec said "we invite you to submit a sec," but every school says that?
 
MSAR says all applicants receive a secondary..

Yeah every school makes it sound exclusive even if it isn't.

They still may screen...I am just saying their phrasing doesn't seem to indicate one way or another to me.
 
Also, what is the secondary fee?
 
I wonder if they send them in waves? Nothing for me yet.

Granted, but I still believe if I can convince them in less than a page there will be no issues. I haven't started writing so I can't say what I will do but I think a page is quite a bit much, esp single spaced.

Yes. Prompts:

We recommend essays to be approximately one page in length. We request no longer than two pages single spaced.

yup, no optional essays. they got rid of the life in discovery essay ( woohoo!). The "how did you hear about RFU?" is now just a dropdown box. It use to be a short answer question, I believe.

Yup, the secondary is tiny this year! It literally only asks for your name, AMCAS ID, email address, dropdown box for "how did you hear about Chicago Medical School" and those two essay prompts. Not even an "additional comments" section.
