Does RFUMS offer student overnight hosting?

Hey guys! If you haven't been reading the thread up until now, I just wanted to make sure that you now that if you are interviewing at our school, we have a student hosting program. Admissions will send a link regarding getting in touch with current students, but if you can't seem to figure it out and you have an interview scheduled, e-mail [email protected] and we'll try to find a host for you.

In addition, if you've already interviewed or just want to speak to a current student about the school (and you aren't interested in being hosted), we'd be happy to set you up with someone. Again, [email protected].

One more time: [email protected].

So in reading this thread it seems like this school "small pools" you first and then sends you an interview invitation. Is that true? Can you get an interview without being small pooled?

About time we got a small pool question 🙂

Typically interview invites are sent to applicants in the " small pool'. There have been one or two cases reported where the individuals got interviews without being small pooled first. Ofcourse this was self-reported.

This thread is soooo quiet now...i guess itll start back up when a batch of acceptance gets out!! lol

Hi! Does anyone have any update about the probation status of the school or how that may affect future residency placements and stuff like that?

pre interview rejection just now. small pooled back in november

edit to add my stats: canadian, 36/3.9

Preinterview rejection here as well a few minutes ago via email. OOS 31 3.89. complete Nov

Pre-Interview Rejection today. Looks like they are done with II

What is small pooling? Was that the email we got saying "primary screening complete"? Because I got that December 20 and haven't heard anything since. I'm really relying on SLU and Rosalind Franklin now that Loyola rejected me haha.

Same. Feeling pretty rough.

Eh. I got an acceptance elsewhere. But I have a feeling people's inboxes will be filling up with rejection emails in the next few weeks as schools end interviews.

Congratz on your acceptance!!! Where did you get accepted to? Do you mind sharing your stats?

@tantacles

So, I am currently wait listed at a few other schools, some of which are more preferred than CMS to which I am accepted. What should I do for housing/roommates? Should I assume that I will most likely matriculate at CMS and finalize housing and roommates by May (or how early should I finalize?) and simply let roommate(s) know that I am waiting to hear back from several wait lists?

In addition, I have a car but is it encouraged to have one at CMS? I am debating whether I should drive from NY to CMS. I know that it will come in handy during 3rd year rotations, but I just wanted to ask.

I doubt your future potential roommates would appreciate signing a lease with you, only to be ditched later if you were accepted into a school other than cms.

😉

That is what I am worrying about. I guess I can wait till June-early July, because that will be usually when I will know quite certainly whether waiting for my wait list movements is worthwhile.

Yea, it can be tough to hangout and wait for the school you have your heart set-on, while still trying to make future living plans.

There are two and ONLY TWO reasons that might compel you to finalize your housing options now:

1. If you plan to live alone, finalize your housing. You can eat the deposit if you get into a less expensive/more desirable school.

2. If you plan to live in student housing (which I would strongly suggest against), you can easily withdraw from the school and no one will be negatively affected by your choice; the school can find someone else to fill your place.

As @BlackBox alluded to, perhaps unintentionally, one of my good friends signed a lease with another girl only to have her back out because she was accepted at the last minute to her state school. She had to shell out around $600 more during her first quarter of school; not a great start. So wait to finalize your housing. Once you finalize your housing (assuming you're getting a roommate at a private apartment complex or in the navy housing), I would say you have a significant obligation to withdraw from all of the waitlists you're on and stick with it. Many people (I did this too) finalize their housing within two months before the start of school. And remember; once you start orientation, you are required to withdraw from all other schools by AMCAS rules, so if you haven't been accepted to another school by then, you're stuck.

With regard to a car, drive your car here. I drove here from the east coast; it's doable. I would suggest renting a hotel to split the drive into two parts; I would gladly recommend the place I stayed at in Lake Erie, but you may prefer to stay midway between NY and Chicago.

Why do you need a car? North Chicago is a food desert unless you have one; you need a car to get to the grocery store, coffee shops, and restaurants. We don't even have sidewalks in this area.

Why do you strongly suggest against student housing? It seemed pretty convenient when I visited. Do most of your classmates living off-campus drive to class? I didn't see very many options near the school and lack of sidewalks/bike lanes.

Thank you for your response.

So it looks like I will be traveling out of country from May 21st to June 26th. Since the classes begin in the first week of August (according to the last year's thread), I will have the whole July to finalize the housing and roommates. If I don't hear anything from wait lists until I return to the U.S., I will be certain with attending the CMS.

With that said, when should I begin looking for the navy housing and roommates? Should I look for potential roommates now through facebook?

Also, if I happen to be unable to bring my car for whatever reason, what should I do? It will be nice if roommates or others could give me a ride for groceries every now and then, but I will definitely feel bad with asking for a ride many times. Is renting a car encouraged in this case?

I am just trying to figure out what I should do this summer as a preparation. Your comments are very helpful and appreciated.

Pricing.

Student housing is very convenient. It is right next to campus, and all of the apartments are either 1 bedroom/1 bath (~$1300/month total) or 2 bed/2 bath ($1700/month total).

The Woodlands apartments, which are also just next door to the school (approximately the same distance from the school buildings as on-campus housing), have 2 bedroom apartments that range from $1300-$1500/month. 1-bedroom apartments are priced comparably to the on-campus housing.

I currently rent a 3-bedroom/2.5 bath apartment from Navy housing (which is open to civilians). 3-bedroom apartments in navy housing go for $1300/month. 2 bedroom apartments are around $1200/month and 1 bedroom apartments are around $1100/month, I believe. I live 1/2 mile away from the school. I also must say that my apartment is far more spacious than those available on campus and at the Woodlands complex.

There are also myriad apartment complexes in the area. If you want to walk, however, on-campus, woodlands, or navy housing is the way to go. Consider pricing, though.

So quick summary:

If you're living alone, on-campus may be a good option.

If you plan to have one or multiple roommates, the pricing is much more affordable in private housing near our school.

Make sure you're a part of the Facebook group that the admissions department set up. Start looking for roommates the second you get back from your trip; most waitlist movement happens just after May 15th.

Also, if I happen to be unable to bring my car for whatever reason, what should I do? It will be nice if roommates or others could give me a ride for groceries every now and then, but I will definitely feel bad with asking for a ride many times. Is renting a car encouraged in this case?

It would indeed be nice if other people would give you rides to the grocery store. However, if they can't, how will you get to a car rental place here? Zipcar is not on campus and I have no idea where the nearest rental facility is. You would likely need a car to reach the rental facility, which would defeat the purpose of renting a car in the first place. A car is strongly recommended here. You need a car to get anywhere in this area; the only exception is getting to the Metra station as RFUMS provides a shuttle on weekdays that goes to the train.

Is there going to be any acceptance this week? I was placed on hold one week after my Jan 15 interview...waiting to hear something.

Has anyone been invited to an interview recently? When do you think they will start sending out II again?
I was complete in August, and was small pooled in October.
I cannot wait to get an II from CMS, I would love to be a student there one day 🙂

You were put on waitlist? I was interviewed on the 10th of January and haven't heard anything. I wonder why your application got processed so quick...

So I never heard anything from this school after I was complete in late August, and I just assumed that ship had sailed. And then I got a small pool email on Friday...I was pretty shocked haha. I have sent in my deposit at a DO school and am pretty set on going there, but this came out of left field. I didn't get any interviews at MD programs so I can't even fathom receiving a late ii from RFUMS. Anyone else recently get small pooled?

I was small pooled on the first week of this month. Best of luck my friend.

I just got small pooled last week!

I was small pooled in November, and it's been radio silence ever sense. I can only tell myself for so long that no news is good news. Can anyone shed some light on this small pool and then wait for three-four months situation? Since I cannot send an update yet, is there anything I can do other than wait? Thanks!!

I interviewed Jan 8th and it's been crickets since. Do some interviewees get post interview holds and some do not? Just wanting me make sure I'm not missing something.

I interviewed on the 10th of Jan..and silence for me too..I think they will put out results soon..This is our 7th week of waiting already. Hopefully we will find out soon.

Also, someone in the previous post said they got rejected and they interviewed at the beginning of Jan…so not sure whats going too… 🙁

I also interviewed on January 8. I got a post-interview hold email on January 24. I wonder why I got an uneventful update when you didn't get an update at all.

Key points:

1. The small pool isn't small

2. The e-mail is nothing to get excited about; you are required to be small-pooled to receive an interview, but being small-pooled does not guarantee an interview by any stretch of the imagination

3. No pre-interview updates

4. No one in this thread knows how big the small pool is, and the admissions office definitely won't release that information.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge regarding this, but is this email the same thing as being waitlisted?

The official waitlist comes out later. Hold means they could still accept you at any point during the cycle, but it's essentially a way of saying "Not yet." Post-interview rejections do occur, so it's not a terrible place to be.
