Interview invite this morning! IS/32T/cGPA 3.77/sGPA 3.57
Non-trad (ish- graduated 3 years ago from Stony Brook undergrad)
Complete 7/23

Good luck to everyone applying!

II this morning!

Complete 7/24; IS; uGPA >3.2; gGPA >3.5; 37S.

Goodluck everyone! So excited for my interview!

I submitted 8/5 and still have not gotten a confirm that my application is complete. All of the other schools have my LORs and everything so it should be there- is this a normal amount of time?

I submitted 7/25 and didn't get the complete email until 8/5. It takes them a while.

OOS submitted app july 30th but still haven't been marked complete. I know my last LOR was submitted 8/1. Is this normal?

I'm hoping to get an interview soon bc I'm flying to NYC the last week of October for an interview elsewhere. Is it too early for me to contact them to see if I have a shot at an interview?

They're probably just going through IS applicants first. I'd wait a little while.

Hi all,
I had a question about one of the prompts and am looking for some advice. For the obstacle question, I want to write about how a lost a friend that I spent almost every day studying with and had the same class with overnight and had to find a way to face going back to that class afterwards or having to deal with father's health issues. I spoke to a buddy of mine in medical school and he said it's a horrible idea.

Why did your friend think that it was a bad idea? I think that it is good to show determination. I know of a young man whose grandfather had colon cancer. He related the experience to his eventual desire to become a doctor.

By the way he graduated from Stony Brook and is in 3rd year residency.

Just seems like such an isolated incident - like not a problem he might ever realistically face again, and so the coping skills are irrelevant moving forward. Plus everyone deals with the death of someone close to them at some point - unless it had a REAL influence on their decision to pursue medicine, I can see the medical school adcoms giving the essay a thumbs down.

II this morning!!!! OOS, Complete 7/26, 32, 3.9.

I'm SO excited. First II of the season and realllly hoping to stay in New York!

I'm IS with high stats complete in very early August (before people who have received II)- have any other IS people like this still not received an II? Getting nervous here, Stony Brook is one of my top choices!

EDIT: got an II right after posting this, I guess Stony Brook felt just how much I would love to go there!

Same situation. Medium to high stats/ IS. Complete early August. Nothing yet, but not freaking out yet.

Did anyone get a complete e-mail from Stony Brook? I just got a "received secondary" e-mail.

midnight0il, I received a secondary complete email after the received secondary email, it took a little while!

Hey everyone, I'm having a bit of trouble with this secondary and would like some input. This is one of my top choices and I'd hate to screw this up. Also, perhaps there are others experiencing similar difficulties.

I'm having trouble with the extracurricular experience that shows compassion question because I already wrote of an instance that answers this prompt completely and directly in my personal statement. If I use the same story, I will be repeating myself. Is that frowned upon?

Thanks in advance for any and all help! Good luck everyone!

EDIT: I initially had a question regarding the "obstacles" question, but I think I cleared it up now so the question is removed. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

I repeated an activity I used for my AMCAS most meaningful; I'm interviewing in a few weeks. I've always been told that it is acceptable to repeat, as long as you are able to add new information or discuss from a different perspective.

Best of luck.

I received an e-mail from Stony Brook saying my secondary application was received on 8/16 (12 days ago) and have not yet received an e-mail saying I am complete and ready for review yet. I am a New York State resident with 33 MCAT; sGPA: 3.86 ; cGPA: 3.7 --- so I am starting to get a little worried that I messed something up.

Has it taken any other in-state applicants 12+ days to receive a "you are complete" e-mail?

it took me 3 weeks to be marked complete.

@ keepitreal7 I'm in the same boat 🙁

good luck everyone!

Got a complete email today after 2.5 weeks.

Is there any way to check your status for stony brook?

I only got the "Supplemental Received" email, no complete email.... How do I know if they're missing something if I can't even check?

I'm just starting as an MS1, so I don't know too much....but if anyone has questions specific to the school feel free to post or PM. I can't promise I'll see or get to it, it's been busier than I expected, but if I check in I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

Anywho completely biased plug, having met the MS2s and gone through first week of classes, I love this program, Class size for our year is 125 which I think may be small compared to the other SUNY schools. Definitely seems close knit, the first semester biochem professors I think knows all of our names by now and they love talking to us. Administration and faculty overall seem close to the students, and the class itself seem really cohesive. Idk if I'll change my opinion after a few more weeks, but for now I definitely think there is a strong sense of community among students and faculty. This might be one of the main reasons I was drawn to the school.

I heard there's a weirdo interviewer at this school....

Does anyone know who I'm talking about?

How so?

One of our professors is well known for being an interesting interviewer. He's really funny and likes cracking jokes...he's not afraid to make some edgier jokes (we're not in middle school anymore). So kids who have him for interview are taken by surprise. Nonethenelss everyone loves him. He's really friendly and personable. My housemate had him as an interviewer and enjoyed it a lot, I think he was one of the reasons my housemate wanted to come here. If the guy you're asking about is the same professor I'm talking about...he is a weirdo...but in a very funny and entertaining way. I could see how a timid or uptight interviewee could be taken by surprise, but really he's an awesome guy.

He edited his post before you responded FYI

II today as well. Complete mid July, so it took a while compared to others who completed early August.

Just got my MCAT--29, very disappointed. I have 3.8cGPA and good ECs, shadowing, research.
I am instate, from long island so SB and downstate are my top choices
I know the AVG is 32. am I SOL with a 29?

I am a junior and definitely have time for a retake. Should I do it?

Talk to your prehealth advisor. If you think you can do better and can commit to studying a ton, not doing other things (like extra volunteering/shadowing/clubs), then I'd consider retaking it. If there is a danger of you doing worse... I might not. But we may not be the exact people to poll on this. Take a deep breath and think it through. You have time.

Just for perspective, I have similar stats (>3.8 gpa, <30 MCAT), and have 2 OOS interview invites so far (my state school is really late on things). However, I was complete with all of my secondaries in Aug.

Do you plan on applying this cycle? Were you scoring higher on your practice tests?

No, I just started my junior year. Im applying next cycle. My average was a 31-32 from all my AAMC practices. I really hope/think that I can get a 31 if i retook. But the 29 kinda hurt my confidence a lot. I would prefer not to retake if I had a shot at SB but I really am starting to doubt it. I have very impressive ECs but I'm worried 29 is too far off.

Anyone get secondary with a 29 and other redeeming qualities?

Interviewing at Stony Brook soon. Can anyone comment on what the interview day/schedule is like? I have not gotten any email from them regarding what the interview day will be like (i.e start time/end time, and the general agenda of the day).

I also would like to know this as well.

If I remember correctly from reading the last year's thread, you get two interviews but they heavily depend on the availability of your interviewers. So, it's possible that you will be done with two interviews in the morning before noon or have to wait until 3 pm to do the interviews. In short, your interview schedule might be drastically different from mine, even if it is on the same interview day.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Roughly how many words/characters per essay did you guys write?

Thanks. do you know if there's like an orientation/campus tour/student panel/lunch or anything like that?

Congrats to everyone who has gotten interview invites so far. I'm a recent grad and am happy to help answer questions but as you guys can imagine some things have changed since I interviewed 5 years ago. In short this is a fantastic program with very solid preclinical professors, excellent clinical experience, and an extremely supportive and responsive administration. Step 1 average has been steadily on the rise and has now been well above average for 3 years after some key changes to the preclinical years. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has regarding the school.

Yes. He's fantastic and hilarious. Don't let the stiff pre-med drones scare you. I interviewed with him and it was a pleasant, fun, and interesting conversation. He may say a few relatively shocking things and talk about topics you wouldn't expect to talk about in an interview (ex: we talked about my relationship troubles) but he's an awesome professor who most people love.

They try to be fairly efficient during the interview day. They'll give you a time to arrive depending on when your interviews are scheduled so you don't have to wait too long. There are two interviews, typically one faculty and one student but you may get two faculty members. You'll be given a tour of the med school by a first or second year student, the administrators will talk to you a bunch and show you a video and feed you lunch. Pretty standard stuff.

For those with II and have already scheduled their interviews, could you let me know what time your interview has been scheduled for?

I'm a little confused by the timing of interview day. I know that noon has been set aside for tours and Q&A, but I'm not sure if interviews occur before or after the tour.

I ask because I'll probably be taking the LIRR up from NYC and it's about a 2.5 hour ride and that wouldn't be feasible for an early morning interview.

Thanks!

it'll completely depend. some people will have both interviews before noon, some will have one before and one after and some will have both after. Btw the first train gets to stony brook at 7:46. I doubt they'll ask you to show up before 8.

Yeah, I saw that the first one arrives at 7:46, but the next one after that is 9:43 so I'm worried about missing that connection at Huntington/Jamaica and being screwed since I'm not very familiar with the LIRR system. And I can't afford to stay overnight. Anyway, thanks for the info!

Interview Invite on 9/11!!

Instate, 3.5 sGPA, 3.2 cGPA, 3.85 post-bacc (55 credits of all pre-req + upper-level science), 32 MCAT (11/11/10), non-trad with strong ECs + LORs

Still waiting for info about what time to get there!

Just a heads up for people planning on taking the LIRR-as mentioned, the earliest train gets there at about a quarter to 8 in the morning. However, the train station is on the West Campus, and the medical school is on the East campus- easily a 20+ minute walk if you're carrying things/dressed nicely/otherwise unable to hustle it KNEES TO CHEST.
There is a campus bus that will take you closer but LOL sometimes it's crowded. So just keep that in mind when making your travel plans.

Good luck to all! See some of you guys next week 🙂

Hey everyone, SB med student here.
Here's the info for a taxi company in case you need to call a taxi once you get to the train station.
Lindy's taxi 631-444-4444. They aren't the nicest taxi drivers but the company basically has a monopoly in the area so you will be hard pressed to find another taxi company. They can take anywhere from 10-40 minutes to pick you up, so plan accordingly.

Lol, very true. First and only time we took that taxi, the driver started smoking a cigarette in the car, and had his seat pushed/reclined way far back. He was friendly though....

omg I HATE lindy. They've got the cab game on LOCK. It's as far out as farmingdale to. I called the can company and told them the driver overcharged me, and they fired him. Why was their solution to give me my money back? SEND THE DRIVER THEY JUST FIRED TO MY HOUSE to give me the money?!!? are you kidding me???!
