2013-2014 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone interviewed here this year yet?

From the last year's thread, I heard the whole interview day seems to be laid-back, and two interviews are conversational and relaxed. Can anyone share their experiences during interview days?

Got an II this morning. Complete e-mail was received on 9/3. 3.86 sGPA; 3.7 cGPA and 33 MCAT.

Hey guys,

I am currently a MS2 at Stony Brook and I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Please note that I don't check these forums regularly, so PM me if you have any questions and I will respond much more quickly/reliably.

I am not going to make a sales pitch for the school or anything, but I am happy hear and I can give you my honest opinion.

Best of luck with your applications, I know it can be a pain but hang in there!

Just wondering, how long did it take for y'all to get complete?

I submitted on 8/30 and still not complete yet!!!

II!

Verified 7/31, submitted ~8/13 but wasn't complete until around 8/23 or so (was waiting on LOR). OOS.

Very excited for this. 🙂

Over three weeks for me, submitted late Aug. They'll probably get to you soon.

It took me 3 weeks before I received the complete email.

I interviewed here last year. The interviews are relaxing but that is not to mean they aren't looking for critical details in your application. They want to make sure you are going to be able to handle the heavy workload of medical school. They need to know you're mature enough (if you're under 25) to handle the stress of dealing with patients and life and death. Relaxing interviews, yes.. nothing ethical, but they will ask you heavily about your experiences and what you've learned from them.

Hey guys, should the secondary essays be 1 page single spaced or double spaced? what did you guys do? thanks!

I did double, some other people earlier in this thread were saying you should do single spaced. Meh. Quality > quantity. I interviewed here last week so I don't think it's going to kill you either way.

I agreed with NeuroNYC, Quality > Quantity. I did not actually pay attention to the 1-page limit since I knew mine was gonna be way under 1 page. And I got an II yesterday (submitted aug 18, complete sep 5, OOS, 3.8+, 35+)

I interviewed here today! Everyone was amazing and incredibly warm and welcoming - interviewers, students, admins... I would be so thrilled to go here next year. 🙂

You'll get an email about a week before telling you your two interview times. I had both mine in the morning, then all the interviewees had lunch together and two current students have us a tour. Then we had some standard presentations about admissions/aid etc. I was done by 1:30. Some people had afternoon interviews though and had to stay. Like I said, overall it was a great day. Very laid back and everyone there was wonderful and so helpful.

Looks like they're up to 9/5. I'm hoping for an II here as well although I was complete not too long ago!

so is it pointless to keep hoping for an ii if i was complete on 8/16?

1st Interview invite!!
Stats: OOS (CA res), 38O, 3.71
Submitted 8/19, complete 9/5, II 9/23.

And yes, it looks like they are up to 9/5

Looking forward to the interview tomorrow! The hospital looks so modern outside.

II this morning! OOS, 36Q, 3.87, complete 8/6.

Really looking forward to this.

Just had interviews today.

Very laid-back faculties and students who did a tour. We were told that they are 90+% positive the incoming new class will have 1.5 year preclinical curriculum, 6 -> 8 weeks off to study for step 1, and earlier clinical rotations.

I was unsure at first but now it is certainly one of top choices, and I will be happy to attend here! The admission person told us that 60% of interviewees get accepted so fingers crossed!

Absolutely not. I received IIs at schools after others did and i had been complete before them. This whole process has a certain crapshoot quality to it and it's too early for you to give up. The person who is looking at your app might just be taking a bit longer to make up their mind. Good luck!

Interview invite this morning! OOS/>35/>3.8

Complete: 8/16/13

anyway to check application status with stony brook?

I received an II this morning. I'm IS and I was complete mid September.

can anyone give some insight as to what about Stony Brook University appeals to you the most? As an OOS applicant, I'm trying to weigh my options between paying the 55k to go to this school or choose somewhere else, and I'd really like to know what about this school sells it to you

Research track for students who can work in Cold Spring Harbor or Brookhaven if interested. In-state tuition for OOS after 1st year. 1.5 preclinical year (90%+ positive as my tour guides said that it will be newly implemented this upcoming year), H/P/F, heavy utilization of standardized patients for early clinical skills. Great matches and step 1, considering it's a state school.

from what I understood, they implement the systems based approach to teaching medicine in your second year. what style do they use/what are they teaching for the first 1.5 years?

I believe it will be systems based throughout 1.5, if I remember correctly. Tour guides said they want to eliminate redundancy in traditional curriculum, so I'm fairly positive it will be a systems based for the class of 2018. One of tour guides was on that curriculum committee, and I asked him if it will be still in process up in the air, and he replied no and he is 90%+ positive it will be implemented. We'll see.

I interviewed at Stony Brook awhile ago and this school is one of my top choices! I love all the research opportunities, I love the support of the school's faculty, I really enjoyed the interactions with students. For some, the location is a problem but I actually like the fact that the campus is far enough from the city for it not to be a distraction and commutable enough to visit on some occasions. The campus/hospital are actually very nice! Actually.. it's hard to tell- I liked the general feel of Stony Brook and I could definitely see myself spending the next four years there. As a IS student, the cost actually is in my favor, so you should evaluate the school in light of things that are important to you. Good luck!

just had my interview here. by far the most laid back, entertaining interview I've had so far. great school, I love their heavy focus on anatomy lab in your first year. this school is definitely a contender for me

I got an interview invitation and wanted to ask if anyone who had already been could explain how you physically get to the medical school. I see there is a Hilton right there on the Stony Brook campus. Can you just walk over to the med school from there, or are there impassable obstacles like highways? Thanks

U can walk there from the hilton but it is on the undergrad side of campus so it's a bit of a trek. Alternatively there is a holiday inn on route 347 (nesconset highway) that will likely be cheaper and has a shuttle bus that'll take u to your interview.

I stayed at the Hilton and it is literally 5 min walk to the medical school area. Very pleasant stay and everyone was so kind.

Once you get to the Hilton, ask them how you get to the hospital area. Basically once you get out of the hotel main entrance, turn left and walk 3 min until you see the tunnel area on your left, go through that and you will see the hospital right in front of you and you cannot miss it.

Go with Hilton, prices are pretty much the same but Hilton easy to walk to if you use the tunnel. Also the Holiday Inn mistreats their employees so they don't deserve the business.

Hey Guys,

So I got the application complete email on Oct. 4 and haven't heard anything yet, which doesn't surprise me. My question is actually related to an "in the area email".

I just received an II from Hofstra North Shore today and it's scheduled for mid Feb - does anyone have thoughts on sending an email to Stony Brook regarding being in the area during this time? I'm from CA so multiple trips to NY would be difficult to say the least.

Thanks for the help!

I would just call them. I feel like you can articulate this over the phone without seeming presumptive (you cannot control what inflections your email will be read with) better than you can over email. Mention that you are not sure where your application is in their review process, but ask if it would be at all possible to push that forward so if the committee is interested in interviewing you, perhaps you an schedule your flight/hotel accordingly with when you will be in the area.

Thanks for the quick reply YankeeBean - a phone call sounds like a good idea. I've made a couple of phone calls to admissions offices this cycle and everyone has been friendly, so hopefully it goes well.

Thanks for the advice!

IS tuition after the 1st year? Really? I thought I read differently on the website...

I could be wrong, but I am fairly positive that at least OOS students don't pay OOS tuition for all 4 years. I am IS, so I did not pay much attention on this one.
