2013-2014 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Btw did anybody else interview with the Egyptian professor? Chillest guy I've met in a long time.

I just don't get it with this school. I submitted my application over two months ago. It took them over a month just to tell me I was complete, and the wait has already been even longer for an invite or rejection.

The fact that I'm an in-state student just makes this even more confusing! I've heard back from (with one other exception) EVERY one of the other 20 schools I applied to. Sigh.

Rant over.

I've yet to hear back from 13 of my 23 schools. It's nothing personal. Schools, SB included, pick and choose who they want. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you already have acceptances?

yeah, I get your point. And I have 3 acceptances already so I know I shouldn't be complaining. But it's still pretty frustrating, ya know? I'm sure we all hate feeling ignored/disregarded throughout this process.

I've heard really good things about stony brook though and I'd love the chance to check out the school. And I'm sure many others here agree. So fingers crossed that they're just being really slow and haven't passed us over.

I interviewed on 10/3 and have yet to hear back. I have heard it's typically a 4 week turnaround so I'm thinking we will hear on Thursday.

Has anyone started a Facebook group yet? I'm about 90% sure I'm going here and would love to connect with everyone!

Accepted! 🙂 🙂 my first!
Interviewed 10/1
36/3.9/IS
Good luck to everyone else!!

Congrats to you both! Looks like October interviewees are finally starting to hear back.

Just got accepted, 10/4 interview. Dunno if I'm going to end up at this school (OOS) but good to see I got in at least one place!

Good luck! Kinda curious if anybody else in my interview group also heard back, some chill guys that day.

FIRST ACCEPTANCE!!

Happiest day of my life so far!

Interviewed two weeks ago.

IS. Non trad. After interview day, it shot up on my list! Good luck to everyone still waiting. Your first will feel incredible.

Are II sent in batches or along the way? Complete since early Sept, haven't heard back....

Waitlisted today. Interviewed on 9/13. This was my first choice school, and even though I'm accepted at quite a few other schools, I'm a bit bummed out as the wait list at Stony doesn't seem to have as much movement as other schools (i.e. Hofstra which is right next door so to speak). Last I checked it was something along the lines of 20% of the incoming class were from the wait list. Congrats to all you guys who got in though! It 's an awesome school 🙂

Yes, that's correct, about ~25 people each year get off the waitlist. How much movement is there at Hofstra?

I had heard anecdotally that almost the entire class of Hofstra 2017 came off the wait list. Again, this is just an anecdote so please take it with a grain of salt. At the same time, it's not too surprising as it's a new school w/o a storied pedigree, and perhaps don't have as many people as other schools who would pick it as their first choice.

interviewed 9/24... heard nothing back yet. anyone else who interviewed in September with no news?

A friend of mine is still awaiting her decision from a mid-Sept interview so you're not the only one. Hang in there!

I have not interviewed here, but I am hoping I'll be invited to. I'm not really sure what a "typical" turnaround time is for post-interview decisions - where I currently attend graduate school, the medical school here tells interviewees to expect an 8-12 week period before being notified of admissions decision. I know that UVA will inform interviewees (typically) on the Friday of the week they interviewed. So, what is a "typical" post-interview wait period?

I'd like to say that the average is a month post-interview, but clearly there are exceptions. I only had to wait 2 weeks, but I know of some who are still waiting to hear after 6 weeks. The admissions process has no rhyme or reason from our perspective.

Ps. I'm still waiting to hear from another SUNY school of which I'm at nearly 5 weeks post-interview.

Accepted today! Interviewed 10/8
31/3.8/IS nontrad
This is my first acceptance and my first post on SDN. I really loved the feel of this school, I could definitely see myself there next year.
Congratulations to those accepted and good luck to everyone!

Accepted! Interviewed 10/26, OOS.

Curious, is anyone else even considering the on campus housing?

Congrats!! But did you mean 9/26? Because 10/26 was a Saturday and less than a week ago lol

That was my interview day! Were you the one who talked to me about Harvard Extension School? I was the one who got scolded for asking too many questions. Regardless of who you are, congratulations!

It's a lot more affordable to live off campus and the dorms are pretty drab… There are a lot of places nearby (bike/short car ride) you can probably find. I'd highly recommend this and if I go here, I'll be doing that.

Can current students or LI natives comment on the best place to live if one's significant other will have to commute to Manhattan to work? I figure Huntington may work, but it's still a 70-minute LIRR ride and I have no idea what the town is like.

Huntington is beautiful but an expensive place to live. It's doable, a lot of people take the LIRR but of course the commute for your significant other will be a few hours a day while yours would be just over an hour a day.

My parents live in a town within the Huntington Township and my father would commute to NYC everyday. He worked fairly close to Penn station though so his commute was < 3 hours a day. Huntington is also a major station along the LIRR so there are more trains that make a stop there so you have more options in terms of which train time to take. The commute is pretty relaxing and you can just sleep on the train to Penn since it's the last stop. Also, it's a nice time to read the paper or just some pleasure reading. Huntington and its surrounding towns are a nice area and I love having the water nearby but I honestly couldn't tell you about the rent prices.

For you, the drive to Stony Brook would be ~40 minutes without traffic each way. I remember it pretty well since I just did this commute last week when I interviewed there lol.

Ack! 9/26, thats what I meant.

The reason I ask about the housing is that during my undergrad I found most of my initial friends just by living near them. I fear that living off campus, I will go to class then go home. I guess we will have to see..!

You could live in a house with other med students? I hear it's really important to go to events/parties/classes/etc early in your first year so that you meet a lot of people too.

The vast majority of the students live in off-campus housing with other students, with their sig others, alone or commute from home. Only a small amount are in the dorms.

Also received interview 10/26 for MSTP, was complete 9/5. Will be interviewing in January.

I was not haha, though I know who you are talking about. He was a great guy, we took the train back together. I was the one who also asked too many questions, but let you take the heat for all of it. I remember you, I think we were sitting next to each other ish?. Congrats and thank you! Is this a top choice for you?

Wait, were you smiley-shaved-head-with-cool-glasses guy? Who was totally jamming along with the music in the video they showed us? Haha.

All of my acceptances are top choices at this point. Waiting to see how the finances shake out before I pledge allegiance. As an OOS student, being able to establish residency and claim in-state tuition for years 3-4 is definitely attractive from that perspective.

haha yes! You nailed that description. Maybe see you next year! Good luck with the rest of the process.

How do we know if we are on the regular waitlist or high priority? It seems like applicants in previous years knew this.

Was offered an acceptance to Stony Brook on 10/30 at 1:15 PM. I was complete with all my application materials on 9/3, received II on 9/16 and was interviewed on 10/15.

They said we should expect to hear back within 4-8 wks after the interview but I ended up hearing back in only 2 weeks (which was a nice surprise). Overall, I thought my interviews went well and the interviewers and students I met were very down to earth and friendly. The school seemed great and was definitely one of my top choices.

I am a NYS resident and have cGPA: 3.7, sGPA: 3.86 and MCAT: 33 (10/10/13) -- just thought I would post this info to help out anybody who is waiting for a decision and is getting worried or anxious. Good luck to all those who are awaiting emails!

Very similar timeline as yours…down to the dates. We interviewed on the same day and accepted on the same day. Hm…I wonder who you are.

Congrats! when were you complete? Trying to figure out when I can expect a response, been complete just over 3 weeks ago

All application materials received email end of august, Application complete email mid sept, II end of oct.

My turn for a question: According to MSAR, last year 646 applicants interviewed, 124 matriculated, any idea of the # of acceptances? I'm guessing somewhere around 250-300? Anywhere to find the official data on this?

I saw somewhere on this forum that the acceptance rate is ~60% of all interviewed.

At the interview one of the admissions people said last year they accepted 52% of people who interviewed (including those accepted off the wait lists)

Yes, I know last year about 350/650 were accepted after all waitlist movement was included.
