2013-2014 Stony Brook University Application Thread

That still seems like a pretty good chance. And I think they're receptive to update letters and LOIs.

What makes you say they are receptive to update letters/LOIs? I never knew what constitutes as receptive because they always just reply that your update has been put in your file.

Only in that, at the interview, they told us that LOIs were encouraged and put into your file…

I was accepted last week and I had had a physician send in an update/recommendation the week before. Not sure if that made the difference :/

II today!! My application was received 9/3 and I added a couple of recommendations on 9/18.

Stats: 3.6/3.3sGPA, 31 (10/11/10)

My boyfriend also got an invite. His stats are 4.0/3.9sGPA, 37 (14,11,12)

That is awesome! Hope they show me some love!!!! My MCAT is a 29 but I am IS.

Do you have any ties to Stony Brook University? Stony Brook does take people with 29's, but I was given an invite last year with the same MCAT only because my entire life revolved around the school. The only other interview I got was at GWU, and that was probably because I submitted earlier and their MCAT range is right around there.

so i still haven't gotten any news since my interview on 9/24. it's a couple days over 6 weeks... any others in similar situation? anyone with ideas on what this may mean? i know it can mean a lot of things but still can't shake off the bit of anxiety.

I would give them a full two months before contacting them. Most people find out about a month to six weeks.. some even 2 weeks, but they do say 6-8 weeks for a decision so it only makes sense not to bother them unless that time frame is up.

I submitted my secondary in late July (IS, MCAT:34, GPA:3.9) but still waiting for an interview invite from Stony Brook.
I have attended 7 interviews so far and have two acceptances, but I would love to get an interview invite from Stony Brook because it is one of my top choice.
Anyone has a suggestion what I can do to help my case (may be a phone call or a letter?).

Couple questions:

(1) How are you notified of your post-interview decision?

(2) Does anyone know when SBU will be sending out their next batch of acceptances? Or how frequently the committee meets to discuss applicants?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the second question but I got my acceptance via email followed by a letter in the mail. I know at my interview they were talking about how they really do take a long time to go through every part of each application (it shows - my interviewer greeted my by asking about my hometown and my dad's job as an architect.. There was maybe one line about that in my application) so they told us not to freak out if we don't hear for a while. You probably heard the same thing but thought I'd share just in case.

Any news for anyone this week?
I haven't heard anything but based on last year's thread, I would imagine people who interviewed up until late October could hear about acceptances either tomorrow or friday. Fingers crossed!!

Congrats! Any one else receive an acceptance? I'm getting nervous :scared:

Another week with no luck :/ Next week will mark the 5/6 week mark so I'm more hopeful! Last year I interviewed in October and got waitlist one month + one week + one day later. Monday will be that same time for me this year.. hoping for better results this time around obviously!

Theyve already accepted Oct. 25th interviewees. Is hope lost for all of us who interviewed prior to that?

Not at all.. I'm willing to bet those who got accepted and interviewed on the 25th had interviewers who are really involved with the admissions process and thus, meet with the adcom on a regular basis which leads to less wait time and quicker turnarounds.

Is anyone by chance driving out from Manhattan or possibly Brooklyn tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Nov. 19th? I will contribute to gas and tolls (if any). PM me if so. Thank you!

Last year, acceptances went out on one day and then a couple days later, only wait lists were sent out. I didn't hear anything when johnnyscans got accepted on friday so I'm pretty nervous right now.

FWIW I felt that my interviews went very well and I got the vibe that my interviewers are very involved in the process.

Does anyone have any stats on how many acceptances were offered to OOS students? I've mostly only seen stats that combine IS and OOS for acceptances.

any rejections this year yet? trying to figure out if not having received an interview yet by now means i've been rejected or not.

At the interview day, they said they no longer distinguished between IS/OOS applicants. OOS applicants go through a more rigorous screening before they get to the interview.

Oh, well that's great news (for me). I thought since 80% of their class last year were from IS, they would accept more of IS than OOS, but I did hear they're looking for more OOS students. I asked one of the ladies at the interview if, as a state sponsored school, they had an obligation to have more IS students, and I think she said something about how they would always want a lot of IS students and something about how they wouldn't accept 80 students from California alone.

Dunno, just hoping I have a good chance. Sent an update and somewhat lengthy interest letter - hoping that will help me out. I was really impressed with the school.

can any current students comment on what you like best about stony brook?

Waitlisted today. Interviewed way back on 9/12.

I withdrew after yesterday's interview. It was a nice place, obviously, but not for me for various intangible reasons. Good luck to everyone!

Something during the interview made you feel like SB wasn't the place for you? Mind elaborating a bit?

Sorry to hear.. that's a long time to wait too. Guess they were really on the fence about you

Not to worry, igeak...I mean a remotely normal acceptee shouldn't worry...but I have some personal idiosyncrasies that make my application weird even by nontrad standards. I felt really at home at the school that accepted me. I did not feel at home at Stony Brook. So I figured best to bow out and free up the committee's energy for an applicant for whom this is a dream school. I am sort of bummed, because I was really looking forward to the interview. But happily, I can't complain.

Does SB offer merit-based scholarship?

I believe at the interview, they said merit based scholarships are provided based on your performance once in medical school so you can have one for your 2nd, 3rd and 4th years but not 1st.

Interview invite 11/19. OOS/32/3.8.
Congratulations and good luck for the interview.
Not much love from SB for me. So far no interview invite. IS/34/3.9. Secondary submitted on July 28th.

Send them an update letter if you're really interested. Can't hurt.
Thanks for the advice! Already did that three weeks ago.
My EC is not bad either (500+ hours of volunteer work, research exposures via 2 different projects). So far have interview invites from 9 schools and acceptance from two of them.
However, because of in-state tuition, quality education and location would consider Stonybrook.

You are doing awesome! I only have 2 ii so far (both SUNYs, strangely, I am OOS). Nothing special EC (300+ hrs voln, 5000+ hrs research). Good luck, hope you hear back soon!

Hope you get a few more interviews, or more importantly acceptance from one or more. Best of luck!

Did anyone who interviewed before 10/11 not get a response yet? We are coming up on 7 weeks soon.
