2013-2014 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks. 3.23 ugrad 3.54 graduate gpa in an SMP 37S mcat, didnt think Id be autoscreened here but you never know how they might feel about ugrad GPAs...

When did you submit your AMCAS? I don't think that Tulane sends out secondaries until they receive your AMCAS. So if your AMCAS hasn't been verified yet, you won't receive the secondary. Also, if you read the thread, Tulane doesn't seem to be big about ugrad GPA. They seem to be big on MCAT scores, so you should be golden 🙂

For the last two questions of the secondary, are we supposed to take the instruction to 'list' our leadership positions and hobbies literally? Just write them down with no elaboration?

Damn, beastly MCAT. Good Job. I'm coming back from a 3.3 undergrad - was going to 38 on MCAT but wound up with a 30 🙁

Keep fighting the good fight, good for you

where can we check the status of our application?

Did you guys simply repeat your leadership roles and hobbies from your primary? (for the secondary)

Does anyone know if there is a website that we can check our application status for Tulane?

There isn't any site to log on to check your status. Updates about becoming complete/rejections/interview invites/etc. will come via e-mail.

Just got the secondary! But I read their instructions and they said that they receive a max of 3 letters. I assigned 4 to them in AMCAS. Does anyone know what to do? I'm emailing them, but it doesn't look like we can change it in AMCAS.

Let us know what they say. I did the same thing.

Received a secondary today. Strangely, they didn't BBC the email for other recipents, so I can view the email address of 69 other applicants. 😕😕😕

MCAT 30 cGPA 3.67

I also got the secondary today, with a bunch of email addresses as well...

Secondary submitted! Good luck to all applying.

Whats the secondary prompt topic? Can someone post it here?

Briefly describe the reasons for your interest in Tulane University School of Medicine. (150 Words Max.)

What have you been pursuing since you graduated? (150 Words Max.)

What was the single most meaningful volunteer experience you have had? (150 Words Max.)

List any leadership positions, in clubs or organizations, you may have held during college. (150 Words Max.)

Please list your hobbies and major non-academic interests (e.g. athletics, art, music, items you collect, genre or favorite author reading material). (150 Words Max.)

thanks chip. congrats on starting. i think i heard this was one of mt headed's only acceptances, strange for a 43 mcat.

i saw they're expensive. do they give any aid out to compensate for that?

Tulane has many scholarships large and small based on income or academics or voodoo rituals. Nobody has any idea how they work, but a significant number of students aren't paying retail to be here. Scholarships even show up after you've committed to Tulane, so the process really is an utter mystery.

About the only thing I would add to Chip's excellent advice is that Tulane really emphasizes community service, way above and beyond other medical schools. When I applied, there was a special section to talk about peace corps, americorps, etc. and there was a discount on the application fees if you completed one of those projects. Tulane hits community service pretty hard during the interview process too, and each medical student has to do a minimum of 50 hours community service (HIV counseling, TB tests, etc) over the first two years.

I so rarely log in to SDN anymore, but I'm having a total blast in New Orleans. The opportunity to live here for four years is probably Tulane's chief selling point. If you're gonna be a doctor anyway, might as well have some fun while you're doing it!

Does anyone know how we can check our application status?

Did a place to pay come up when you guys submitted?
I submitted, but was not asked to pay.
I just want to make sure my application went through!

Ha, I just checked the email I got from them a while back and it did have the emails of the 189 applicants. Seems like a funny thing for them to overlook

Yes you should have been asked to pay $125

Interesting I was able to submit my secondary successfully but I dont recall them asking for payment...anyone know where I'm supposed to pay? I even emailed them about it but they havent responded yet

Should I call them about this? Unfortunately, there is no place for me to check the status of my app!

Did you participate in Americorps, Peace Corps, etc? If you checked that you participated in these programs, they waive your secondary fee. So you never see the screen to pay.

For anyone that is wondering about the secondary app payment fee of $125 I emailed Tulane admissions and they said a technicial error has occurred and they're working on fixing it. The exact email response I got:

"There is a technical problem with the secondary application. CollegeNet is currently working on the problem. You will receive an email once the problem is resolved. You will be able to pay your fee at that time."

Great, thank you.

Does anyone know how we check our application status for Tulane? The page that we used to complete the secondary locks you out once you've submitted.

Scroll up a bit and you'll see that someone already answered this the last time it was asked. Good luck!

Submitted a week ago, still not completion email. 😕😕

Submitted secondary July 8th, got the email telling me I was complete today. I wish there was a way to check and see if theyve received all your letters, I'm sending a couple that arent required. Will they give this information out over the phone? Has anyone tried?

Submitted on the 8th. Got the complete/ under review email today.

Has anyone heard about what happens if you accidentally submitted extra letters? I've emailed twice with no answer. Tried calling today, but it was after hours.

Has anybody who hasn't paid yet been asked to pay?
Tulane sent an email saying the problem will be resolved and we'll receive an email when to pay, but that was a week ago and I have not received anything.

How important is leadership experience for Tulane? I believe that my stats are on par with Tulane's standards but I'm thinking that I won't have a chance since I didn't really have any significant leadership roles in college other than being a lead RA in my research lab and a co-captain in an intramural sport. Do you guys think I should still apply to this school? I really don't want to spend $160 for nothing.

I wouldn't say my leadership experience was any better. They will ask you about it if you get an interview though so be prepared to explain how you lead those groups and what your role was.

Hey so I know some earlier people asked but I couldn't see a response. For the last two questions did you guys just put a bullet list because I don't think I can really explain much with the 150 word limits.

+1

I don't know how to go about doing this.

I submitted in paragraph form. Just my personal preference.

"What was the single most meaningful volunteer experience you have had? (150 Words Max.)"

I am having trouble with this question. I used a volunteer experience as one of my most meaningful experiences in my primary application and also mentioned it briefly in my personal statement. I don't really want to repeat it again and I don't have any other meaningful volunteer experiences, any advice?
