2013-2014 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an II on 1/5 for 2/21. Just in case anyone hasn't gotten an II/pre-interview reject yet. There's still hope! 🙂

Anyone else who's been accepted receive a financial aid email?

When I interviewed last week i stayed at the Holiday Inn-Superdome. Very good deal. Super close to the medical campus. Everyone was extremely nice and let me store my luggage in the back room even after check out. I would highly recommend it.

Apparently if I go to Appaloosa, Louisiana for rotations I'll be first assist on every surgery and the town has an annual chicken catching contest, so I'm already pretty sure I'll be going to Appaloosa.

Coming from the NW, I too would choose appaloosa to witness a chicken catching contest.

Great, now my spelling mistake is getting propagated. The town is Opelousas. Either way it sounds like a great place to do rotations. And I could use some chicken catching. There are three roosters living in the abandoned house across from my bedroom window (See what I mean about New Orleans being in the Third World?). I can't quite get a good shot at them from inside my house and I think the neighbors would freak out if I went stalking around with an air rifle. I hope the rat poison I set out does the trick soon, because I'm tired of getting woken up at 5:00 every morning when the roosters start crowing.

I was wondering the same thing. It even took them forever to acknowledge my acceptance. I sent it twice because I was afraid I didn't send it to the correct email. I guess I had assumed they would mail or at least email us with dates, information, etc.

Hi all! I'm interviewing at Tulane next Friday. I'm planning on flying in on Wednesday so I can get to know the city prior to my interview. Is anyone else doing the same and/or does anyone have any recommendations on things to do that will help me accomplish this?

Also, I have a flight out almost immediately after the interview day on Friday, so I'm too scared to risk a lengthy shuttle ride. Does anyone want to split a cab to the airport?

Feel free to PM me!

Accepted this afternoon. Have been firmly believing for the past 3 years that MD school was completely out of reach for me. I am the luckiest hard-working bastard I know...and I know a lot of hard-working bastards.

Oh and interviewed 12/10

Congrats! It's good to know there will be at least one hard-working bastard in our class!

I would take a walk through the French Quarter as well as a walk through Uptown. I found walking those places and the areas between helped me get a better sense of the city.

Congrats to all of the recent acceptances! I'm in the same boat and have been mulling over what to do with my remaining freedom (it seems like it's dwindling fast!). I wrote a blog post about my summer plans if anyone wants some inspiration! Current students: Feel free to either back me up or refute me!

interesting. why didn't you think you'd get into an md school and why do you think you got in @ tulane?

When I finally decided to pursue medicine during my senior year of UG, everyone capable of providing me with an unbiased opinion--i.e. advisors, a few of the more blunt ER docs I work with, and my fellow denizens of SDN--told me that with my stats, MD acceptance was impossible and DO acceptance would be a longshot. They were mostly right; I applied to over forty MD and DO schools and have received countless rejections so far.

Why do I think I got in at Tulane? The interview was fantastic and I fell in love with the school, which was probably evident. Why do I think I got an interview? I have no f***ing clue. To someone who looks closely, there is a lot of personal growth evident in my application. It was my job to make this as evident as possible in my essay and secondaries, but in many instances I failed at that. I'm lucky that someone at Tulane saw what I was trying to show them and decided to give me a chance.

Flying in Wednesday to look around town before a Friday interview is genius.

If you are the museum type, the Louisiana museums on either side of the St. Louis Cathedral are worth a visit. The one on the left is ancient times to Louisiana Purchase to post-civil war, while the one on the right is more modern stuff (Katrina / Mardi Gras / etc). Stroll down Royal street for the funky shops and street performers. Get some beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde, because for some reason everybody does that. At night, catch a Jazz set at Preservation Hall, Fritzels, or see the music at any of the numerous places on Frenchmen street.

That should give you plenty New Orleans background and experiences for the "why New Orleans" portion of your interview day.

Go to Luke and get some oysters. All the John Besh restaurants have really good happy hours. Luke has half price oysters and specialty cocktails, Domenica has half price gourmet pizzas and house wines and well drinks. The National WWII museum is fantastic, and you could walk to it from the quarter/CBD, or take the streetcar. Streetcar will also get you to St. Charles, not sure if you can go all the way uptown without having to transfer to a bus since they're doing a little construction on the line. Ask the driver, they're generally nice. From St Charles you could walk down to Magazine street, there's a high density of shops and restaurants, especially between Louisiana and Napoleon.
Can you tell I'm a little obsessed with food?

God I hope there's waitlist movement this year, I've heard that Tulane historically accepts most of its interviewee's and it's just so disheartening to be on the acceptance range :[

woohoo! I just got a rejection e-mail. I thank Tulane for a quick, professional turn around. good luck everyone!

edit: pre interview rejection

+1. Love this school too.

I'm rooting for you, man. It's not a rejection yet. Plus, if there's no second look this year, maybe more applicants will turn down their acceptances.

I've searched this whole thread, so I'm sorry if someone's answered this already.... How long are each of the interviews and the standardized patient scenario? And does anyone know if they're open or closed file?

Standardized patient is about 15 minutes. Faculty interview is 30. Student interview is about 30 (you eat lunch with them) as well. I think both of mine were closed... Neither interviewer referenced my file.

Student interview is about 45-60 minutes (you get lunch with them 12-1).

student interview is closed file (I was not even given the name of my interviewee until I showed up).

if i remember from last year correctly my interview I had the faculty member, he told me straight up "alright I haven't seen your file, tell me what I need to know to get you in."

Did you send your update letter by mail? If so, who'd you address it to?

Did you get an e-mail back acknowledging their receiving your letter? I sent a letter of interest to them post interview and I haven't gotten an e-mail back yet. Also, did you send it to [email protected]?

While the interviews are normally closed file, if you score an interview with Dean Beckman it will be open file since she runs admissions. It's also supposed to be a good omen.

Hey Everyone, I will be interviewing here next Monday at Tulane. I really need to do well in this interview as this may be my only shot at getting into medical school this cycle. I was wondering if any of you knew what kinds and types of interview questions they ask? Also, would someone mind telling me what the standardized patient scenario is? Do any of you have any tips or things that I should know beforehand? Thanks.

Negative. All interviewee's had to sign a confidentiality agreement, and should/would not give up such information. Just be yourself in the interviews. They are low stress. Good luck.

+1 You'll be just fine. The interview day is very relaxed! In the big scheme of things, even if you did know the behavioral interview scenario beforehand (which you won't), it wouldn't provide much of a leg up. The behavioral interviews/MMIs at schools across the country don't require any preparation, as they are really just seeing if you can be normal and talk another human.

Besides, there are many many factors play into the selection committee's decision. Be yourself and you'll do great!

read back through this thread there are good tidbits of advice on what to say generally. honestly there is no magic shibboleth that gets you into Tulane. be yourself because, honestly, would you want to go to a school that accepted you thinking you are one person when you are another? Tulane isn't just about stats its about fit and they care as much as you do about fit in the school. no sense in faking it to make it when you could just be miserable for four years because of it.

Just got an II, for Feb. 10th. Complete, well... in July. Stats in MDapps

I'm sure a student host would let you, I'd try asking the front office to connect you with a student if you can't find one here.
