2013-2014 Tulane University Application Thread

does anyone know how the average wait time has been between interview and decisions? i'm into my second week and i'm dying here, tulane is my #1 by far.

I empathize. I interviewed right before xmas break, so it took a little over 5 weeks for me to hear. I doubt you'll have to wait that long. If you're also one of those people who picks at their face when they're nervous, hopefully your face will be in better shape than mine by the time you hear. Is this weird? Yea it's probably a little weird. Whatever, I don't think I'm the only one.

I was accepted to Tulane back in November and was planning on attending second look weekend this spring. I contacted admissions and was told there would be no second look weekend this year. Would any current students be willing to let me go to class with you for a day in march? I was hoping to get one more look at the school and city before making my decision.

Ditto. I'm definitely going back to NOLA visit at some point before May 15 🙂

Hello everyone,

I am just gonna try something informal here.

I know there will be no 2nd look this year (unfortunate, since for much of my class it really helped people choose Tulane). If any of y'all feel strongly about it PM me. I want to see how much I could work at getting it back for the accepted students after your class. It may help if I can show how much interest there is in this upcoming class in a second look.

thanks y'all!

Tulane is my top choice but I am currently in the acceptance range so I want to send an update letter/letter of interest to the school. Does anyone know which email address to send it to?

Has anyone stayed with a student host for their interview at Tulane? How are accommodations, and were you able to get a better feel for what it's like to be a student at Tulane?

Yes I did and thought it was extremely helpful. I slept on a couch, but it was a damn good couch. They'll also give you some useful tips for the interview

Things will vary a lot. If you happen to stay the night before a test, your host will probably be too busy to tell you much about Tulane. At other times they will have much more time to socialize with you. We've organized a few group dinners with the interviewers and their hosts. Accommodations vary from student to student. Mostly you can expect couches or air mattresses. If you stay at my house you'll get a nice bed but no sink in the bathroom. I recommend you keep your expectations low so you'll be happily surprised if things turn out well. Either way you can't beat the price. If you want a really comfortable place to stay I recommend the Holiday Inn next to the med school. When I was there they had a discounted rate for Tulane interviewers.

Question for current students:

I'm in New Orleans now on an unofficial second look trip and I'm wondering what I should take a look at in the medical buildings (I.e. Where do 1st and 2nd year students spend the most time?)

Yesterday, I went up to Admissions in the Murphy building and took a second look at the student center and gym. In the main medical building, I poked my head in the lecture hall, food court, student center, library, and walked through several departments. Also walked across the bridge into the medical center.

Did I miss anything?

If you can get uptown you could also check out the undergrad library, food court, and gym.

You got pretty much everything. If you're thinking of living near the Tulane undergrad campus you should go visit there like Missorleans suggested. If not, it isn't important. I live on the opposite side of town and haven't been to the main campus since the white coat ceremony at the beginning of the school year. Almost all of your first year classes will be in Hutchinson (or as I jokingly call it, the abandoned-looking building next to the abandoned building). Your second year classes will be mainly in Murphy, if you go to class at all. If you've done a tour of Hutch and Murphy, about the only place left where you'll have classes are the standardized patient rooms in the Poydras building. You already saw them during your interview so there's not really any reason to go there. I don't think the quality of the buildings should matter much in your decision to come to Tulane. If it was an important factor I would be recommending one of the new DO campuses with beautiful sim centers and non-smelly anatomy labs that I interviewed at. How much you like New Orleans and Tulane's education in general are much more important.

I think you are missing the entire point of going to New Orleans for a second look. IT'S NEW ORLEANS!!!

"The 1st and 2nd year students spend the most time" not in the med school buildings at all. Go out. Have an adventure. Tell us how much fun you had. Make us jelly!!

I get the point, but I'm acceptance range waitlisted. Top choice too.

Does anyone know when Tulane stops interviewing?

What email address(es) should post-interview letters of interest be sent to?

Also, are there any current students who are in the MD/MPH program that wouldn't mind talking about their experience? I'm seriously considering applying for it, but I have no experience in public health so I'm not sure what to write about.

Do you suggest waiting until interviews end before sending a post-interview letter of interest?
I think that's up to you. I usually wait because I want to use it if it's wait listed and want to send LOI/update letter combination.

totally depends. I honestly do not know how much it helps either way. I guess an LOI (if you actually mean it) would be something they could take into consideration, but, since Tulane's turn around is usually fairly fast, I would wait. also you may get in without it (if you are already wait listed then send away)

I was put into the acceptance range so not wait list, at least not yet.

Just gave up my interview spot today for next Friday, hope it goes to one of y'all 🙂

Hello! I'm interviewing here soon and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a hotel? The interview invitation has some info about a couple of hotels, but just wanted to know if anyone had specific suggestions. Thanks!

I stayed at the Maison Dupuy. I had a fantastic time and it was in the middle of all the action. You can walk or cab it from the hotel to the interview. I guess it is expensive though, because I don't think many interviewees stay there.

Staying with a student host is also popular, if you are only going to spend a night here.

So what does this mean for people who interviewed in January if they are already sending out February acceptances? I interviewed in early January and still haven't heard anything.

I wouldn't worry. There were people who heard back before I did and their interview date was after mine. it took about 2 months for me to hear back but it seems to vary

Thanks for the reassurance! Starting to go slightly crazy over here. Yikes

Anyone out there interview for a place in the PSP?
If so, have you heard anything!?

:nailbiting:

slowly dying...

Acceptance Range: 2/19/14
Interviewed: 1/27/14

I know that Tulane's waitlist movement last year was low, and that they probably had overenrollment. Does anyone know if this year will be the same?

Thanks

Last year there was no waitlist movement at all. Fewer people than usual declined their acceptances, and we ended up with a larger class than usual. I doubt if anyone knows for sure what will happen this year. I'm sure it will come down to how many people end up accepting or declining their acceptances, and we won't know that until May 15th.

I'm anxiously waiting to hear back post-interview! How long is the turnaround?

I wonder if that is why there is no second look this year... because last year's inaugural Second Look was so successful that everybody wanted to come to Tulane and it messed up the waiting list movement?

If that's the case, let's be glad there is no second look, because then all the half-hearted accepted students might go elsewhere!

Please let this be true. Tulane is definitely my #1 choice but I'm stuck in the acceptance range list.

I stayed here as well! I thought it was beautiful and had a great location 🙂

Acceptance Ranged. Interviewed late January.

Seems to be a theme. Seems like there's a lot more acceptance ranges this year as opposed to previous years. Really hoping for some waitlist movement soonish.

Interviewed: 1/31/14
Accepted: 2/24/14

Love the school and love the city!
