2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MS1 here - been on sdn for a while but made a new account anyways. Happy to answer questions on here whenever I have the time!

Interview format is 2 thirty minute interviews that happen after lunch at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). Both of mine were at DHMC but some had it back at the medical school itself. Interviews were pretty relaxed here compared to some of my other schools.

thanks for the response!

Who generally conducts the interview? Do you mind sharing what the topics/format of the two interviews were?

Any non citizen here got a short email asking for a copy of the green card? Wonder if it's for everyone with a green card, or it's a good sign for potential II....

I just received an email asking for a green card, so I think the message was sent to all PR applicants.
Okay. Thanks. I guess it's for everybody who's PR, but maybe we are both in for a II soon. When were you complete?

I got a green card email as well. Seems like it was sent to every PR (although I hope it was for special people 😉)

Just got a complete email ......... I thought I was already complete, but looking at my email, I only got the successful transmission email .......

So, apparently, you need a PR card sent to the officer to be completed .... which now that I see on the secondary is one tiny sentence at the very end ........... Submitted over a month ago too ... gg. :boom:

I didn't even see that one tiny sentence...
I had a terrible feeling when I read the two words "thank you". Why would the school thank me if not for rejection???!!!
Thank god it's not rejection, it's just a message to me to "keep up with the game of waiting."

Exactly .... Our apps are probably super late in the pile now ... 🙁

This is really annoying. Same issue with me. Got the e-mail asking for the PR card. Just sent it in, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't considered complete until now (a month later...). This worries me, as it is somewhat unfair.

I do not think it is unfair. The application clearly stated, on the submission page, that it would not be considered complete until a copy of the PR card was submitted.

I wouldn't be too worried though. They're all for diversity and, in my opinion, not being a US citizen helps your case. 🙂

Oh, in that case, my bad! But yea let's hope so 🙂

It's short for Priority in Receiving IIs and admission card.
Ugh. I wish.
It's proof that someone is a permanent resident, otherwise called the "green card". Most people are citizens who don't have to bother with that.

Hi guys I don't quite understand what you mean by PR... As a Canadian applicant, I don't have a green card nor am I a permanent resident of US. Am I supposed to do send something to the adcoms?

PR permanent resident. Since you are not a PR then you don't have to send in anything. I don't know what Dartmouth would need for international students though, so maybe check with the admission office.

HI all! I have a quick question about sending updates.... If something significant has changed since submitting the secondary, should I send an update to that email account? my interview is scheduled for sept, but I thought it might be wise to update my application as I have a new job that will require a move later this month...

Congrats!!

I agree, I think that since you already have an interview I would just tell them at the interview because it'll likely come up

Perhaps this was already discussed, but is anyone else impressed with this school's match list history?

Very impressed! It looks like Dartmouth's match list is much better than that of other schools with similar ranking.

Is it substantially better - I'm still hesitant as to whether doing clinical rotations all over the country (and world) is a good thing or bad thing?
Where can you find the match list?

I guess its status as an Ivy does matter. I would also think that the fact that the class is predominantly composed of nontraditional students allows its graduates to do interesting things with their medical degree.

I would think the success of penn and michigan in match is for similar reasons. But what do I know. Just a guess. 😵

I am complete as of 8/25. My stats are 3.55 cGPA, 3.43 sGPA, and 31 MCAT (10/11/10). Hoping for a miracle 🙂

II! First one of the cycle. Submitted secondary 7/14. OOS applicant and LizzyM ~60, non-trad.
congrats!! do you mind sharing whether you have anything unique about your app? as a fellow lower-stats app here, but good ECs/research, I'm very very anxious!

Thanks! I have a very sharp upward trend in GPA (from ~1.0 in first year to ~3.6 from second year on) and most of my ECs are pretty average. My MCAT is 31-34. I do have some unique work experiences that I'd rather not post here because it's pretty identifying, but feel free to PM me to ask what it was.

May Dartmouth have a pocketful of miracles. . .and scatter some in our directions!

Amen! Are you as wishful as me or do you have stats withing reason for Dartmouth?
I am more and more unsure about what reasonable stats may be. . .I am not trying to be evasive, just realistic. My MCAT is 37 (highest in verbal) and my cGPA under 3.8, while my sGPA is just over 3.5--and, although I completed all the premed requirements, I majored in one of the Liberal Arts and graduated two years ago. I'm not the child of physicians AND I'm an introvert. . .so, even if I get an II, I worry about demonstrating cool confidence during the interview. This process reminds me a bit of one of those match-making reality shows, where even the beginning pool of bachelors and "bachelorettes" (ugh, what a word!) are, by most standards, way above average and the choice comes down to personal preference. Sometimes I think that all that I have going for me is invisible--a sincere lifelong desire to be a physician. And that not only doesn't show, but doesn't distinguish me much for the rest of the hopefuls.

Hope that's not too philosophical. What draws you toward Dartmouth, superdoc? I hope you don't find Keggy that attractive!! 🙂

Man, I thought I was reading about myself here (minus some details)! Good luck to you this cycle!

Well it is pretty interesting how I ended up applying to Dartmouth. I started this cycle with no intentions of applying to any top schools except the University of Washington because I am a resident. I would not by any means consider myself an elite student. But after I had applied to my list of schools I started receiving emails and then even a letter from four top programs. The University of Michigan, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Harvard all invited me to apply because I had agreed to participate in a MCAT score release program for disadvantaged students (think white redneck, not URM). And since I have learned to never close the door of opportunity I applied to all of them except Columbia. I don't have any particular hope that I will be accepted to any of these programs, but it is fun and exciting to apply. Any medical school will be a success for this community college educated, high school drop out.

As my particular interest in Dartmouth, I really like the rural location since I grew up in a town of five hundred. I also really like the small class size. Other than this I don't know too much about the school. And to answer your question, no I don't find Keggy to be particularly attractive 😉

I appreciate your modesty BengaliBrat, but a 37 MCAT (with a verbal reasoning score of 13 I presume) places you in an elite category and many prestigious schools are desperate to have a class with a median MCAT score of 37. With your score you would be of great assistance to said schools and I am sure you will have the option of choosing between several fantastic schools.

BTW, a score of 13 on VR means you are pretty much a genius! My VR score of 11 is the only thing I can point to in my whole application that says I am somewhat intelligent.

Same exact story here. High school dropout, grew up in a VERY small town, 11 on VR, the whole bit. 🙂

That is too crazy! Good luck to you! Where did you apply?
Dartmouth was my mega reach. I honestly only tried here because I heard they are known for liking non-trads with a story. Other than that, I applied at more reasonable schools for my stats: Rosalind Franklin, EVMS, Rush, Creighton, Tufts, UNMC (I'm a Nebraska resident), Drexel, Vermont, Quinnipiac, Commonwealth, MCW, Penn State, Minnesota, Colorado, and then for DO schools I have Des Moines, Rocky Vista, and PCOM. I'm thinking of adding more. What about you?

Well, we have Creighton, Commonwealth, Dartmouth, and PCOM in common. I also applied to U of Washington, Loyola, Saint Louis, U of Texas San Antonio, U of Texas Houston, U of Texas Galveston, Jefferson Medical College, U of Michigan, Baylor, and Harvard. I applied to Western U COM and Liberty U COM as well.

I have received II's to UT San Antonio, Western U COM, and Liberty U COM so far. I am pretty excited to hopefully get my first acceptance in September!

I don't know your particular circumstances, but I wouldn't apply to any more if I were you. You have your bases covered pretty well.

Tsk, tsk, Superdoc! We do not permit negative self-talk here!!! I'm kind of familiar with Hanover. Let's make a date for breakfast at Lou's, an awesome bakery always crowded with the appreciative. We can do this at the interview or later, when WE BOTH GET IN!! Seriously, you have to keep knocking at those opportunity doors. And stop putting yourself down! Who you were. . .okay, that's who taught you to be who you are. (And by the way, although I call myself (justifiably) "Bengali Brat," my mom likes to "brag" that she is "a fifth-generation redneck" (and joke that her "kin" are upset because she married my father when so many of her cousins were ready to court her!) America is great, and you can be part of the proof.

Just teasing about Keggy. I can never believe that he serves as a mascot and emblem! (But many at Dartmouth are very fond of Dartmouth and all he embodies! Sorry, Big Green, but you know that it is so!)

I am wishing you your choice of schools and a chance to give all that you have to give. Physicians should not (I believe) be all born into privilege. Hardship really does build compassion, don't you think?
