2014-2015 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also waitlisted a couple days ago. Interviewed 9/22. Looks like Georgetown really wants us to want them, don't they?
Attended interview yesterday and one point of note regarding waitlisting.
1. If you do not write a letter they do not activate your file from the waitlist and will not consider you for application. You have to write that letter! They want to know that you are serious about them. The other comment was something about not writing the letter saying they made a mistake the first time (you know - implying they should have already accepted you because you are amazing etc.)

Hmm, yes! I interviewed and heard the same thing. I'm wondering how YOU personally feel about it.

The day I interviewed the students had an exam so the following statement might not have any weight. The students at georgetown seemed unhappy to me, at least compared to other schools I visited. The student I had lunch with was asked the question about pass fail system and he said, "It is what it is" and shrugged.

Personally I get why admissions does it, they do not have the time to review everyone so it is an easy way to differentiate. Plus they get people into good residency programs which is good news. I personally am not a fan because I have seen other schools switch to P/F and have also done the same, granted they are top 10-20 medical schools. I am not really considering the grading system in my thought process for medical school, for me it comes down to residency placement and can I see myself living the lifestyle that current med students are having now. Honestly the teaching of most med schools are very similar. The opportunities in clinical settings are pretty similar too (....free clinic...place to volunteer...shadow opp), the grading is always going to be tough. Ill let you know if my thought process changes when I actually have to make a decision (march/april).

Btw I love georgetown and the campus is gorgeous. The hospital meets all my needs and the residency match is one of the best I have seen. My previous post came off negative, I just think the students had a really rough exam.

Some schools have genuine pass/fail the first 2 years (70%=MD is one phrase I've heard). Other schools have "pass/fail" like here that is really just A,B,C,D. I imagine that is what the "it is what it is" comment was referring too. My interview day, the 2nd years seemed both cheerful and genuinely happy with the school. I agree the campus is beautiful and seems like a great school. I am curious what others think though. Is Georgetown a great school and why?

IMHO it is. Medical school is simply a means to realizing your ambitions and aspirations as a physician, researcher, and/or teacher. A school's goal should be to present each student with an opportunity to do so. In this regard, I feel that Georgetown successfully allows it's graduates to advance their medical careers as far as he or she desires.

In other and fewer words, Georgetown has great residency placement.

Yeah might be because I had a first year. And yes the "it is what it is" has to do with the High honors/honors/pass/fail system. Personally I love the faculty here, they were the most upbeat and interesting group I have seen. Georgetowns also makes students set new goals for themselves...like run a marathon. Of course their mission statement is unique and defines them in every aspect of their school.

Has anyone from mid-October interview days heard back yet? Thanks!
I interviewed mid September and still haven't heard back :/ seems like there isn't really any rhyme or reason to when they let you know!

Did anyone who was accepted receive a physical letter in the mail? I can view my decision letter online and I completed the accepted applicant form. I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. SO excited for Georgetown next year!!

Spoke with Georgetown Admissions today and I was told that they are releasing the decisions today and tomorrow! Good luck everyone!

When I spoke with a 2nd year about the whole honors/pass/fail grading system, he kind of explained it along these lines: if you are really interested in a subject (i.e., phys or hist) then basically you'll end up likely doing well on the exam, and often that's what puts people into the "honors" category on exam scores. So basically, it doesn't seem as if all students are constantly trying to score honors on ever exam across every subject. The "it is what it is" just refers to the fact that you'll likely end up getting the higher marks on things you are more interested in, and students don't really kill themselves over trying to get the high marks each time.

At least that's the impression I got on my visit, so n=1 and whatnot..

Just got rejected 🙁 Interviewed mid Sept, Lizzy M ~74. I find it very surprising regarding the fact that my interview day went great and I was expecting to be put on the wait-list in the worth case scenario! Any way, having four other acceptances helps to ease the pain 🙂 Good luck to everyone else

decisions for what interview time period, do you know?
My interviewer told me to expect 6-8 weeks, but I'm not sure how accurate this is. I heard in 5 weeks. I don't think the time that you wait has much to do with whether or not you'll be accepted.

Good luck to people under review right now. If anyone who interviewed late October or early November hears something, please post!

Waitlisted :/ Interviewed 10/15. Will be sending in a letter later this week

I'm almost glad GT are so waitlist heavy because it makes riding the waitlist train that much easier when you know you are not the only one.

.... come onnnnnnnn Georgetown!

I spoke with admissions today and they haven't sent out the actual acceptance emails yet but should soon so keep an eye on your inbox!

any interview tips? generally laid-back/conversational or more formal/ACA heavy?

my interview was very conversational. the interviewer had read my application pretty thoroughly (though I may have heard that this isn't always the case). he seemed genuinely interested in what I had done and what I had written about, so the interview revolved around my activities. he did ask me a few ACA questions, but - at least in my case - it was because I was the one that brought up the subject when I was answering another question. the interviewers also do not see your grades or scores.

Mine was also laid back, my interviewer didn't get a chance to read my file so it was a first encounter for both of us. I got asked about the ACA, but more on how I view healthcare in general, no specific questions really about it. I also got asked a few ethical questions, but overall the vibe of my interview was very friendly and conversational.

Accepted post-interview via phone call from Dean on 12/3. Interviewed on 9/16.

I am really excited about Georgetown, and I definitely attending. To all those who are still waiting on hearing back, I urge to stay strong and never lose hope! I waited for 12 long weeks to hear back and it was so worth it! For anyone who got rejected, I wish you all the best with your other applications. There are so many great schools out there that are searching for the talent you possess! Don’t let any setbacks derail your journey to becoming a physician!

Once again, thank you so much for all the helpful posts –it makes a huge difference to wait alongside your peers rather than on your own!

P.S. I received a notification for a change in my Secondary App portal (where the official acceptance info is sent to).

Were you placed on the waitlist? Congrats on your acceptance !
No, I was never on the waitlist. It just took them longer for them to give me my decision in comparison to other people who interviewed around the same time that I did.

P.S. Thanks for the congratulations, I am really excited.

Complete late October, Rejected today, LizzyM= 70+

Does anyone know whether Georgetown provides application feedback?

George w town is stone age old, underfunded, overpriced, pretentious as hell, and their cutthroat environment is horrific. I don't know how you guys can amp yourself up about this place because it's atrocious. WDing from waitlist.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. I'm really glad you spent the money to apply and interview even though you have such a negative view of the school. I'm sure Georgetown will spend your money wisely.

Interviewed the last week of October... I'm so nervous about potentially hearing back soon. Does anyone know if they release decisions on specific days during the week or is it just unpredictable?

Interviewed on 10/30, and I'm anxious too to hear back as well... Loved Georgetown and I was super impressed by their curriculum and their unique programs like social justice track, so I'm hoping to get a good news. I would also love to live in DC!!

While I think that Juciy J might have gone too far in bashing the school, I did get the feeling from current students that it was more competitive (not in a good way) and less team-based than other schools that I have applied to. My interview process was also not greatly positive, and I got a conflicting vibe from several students about how well the school worked with its students.

It was also tough because I had one interview with a current student who literally said they had no real say in the interview process as they were on the bottom of the hierarchy. It was a bit frustrating as I spent a lot of time and money to travel and go to the school so I felt marginalized as other interviewees got current physicians working with the school. I tried to make the best of the interview process, but I am betting others that had only one interview with a current student felt a bit shorted as well. I think that interviewing with a current student is great, but I think that having a balanced system and also getting to interview with a current faculty member makes the process much fairer to those interviewing.

Also, it has one of the highest debt loads for graduating students. Because my experience was not stellar and I had some amazingly positive experiences at other schools, I will be withdrawing. I do not think it is the worst school in the world, but my experience was just okay and a bit negative. Wish you all good luck, and perhaps I am just not a good fit for this school. I have acceptances from a few other schools so I will be going there.

I'd just like to have an acceptance let alone options 😉
Everything is relative. Sorry you got a medical student who didn't believe they had any input. I would suggest their input is very important else why have the interview? I know a few on my interview day were not impressed with their interviewers - one had challenges just understanding their interviewer (a physician at that).
I am genuinely happy you have options (they don't just fall from the sky) and hope the school you choose is everything you want it to be. Some people don't handle being wait listed well and treat it like a rejection. This process is brutal. Hopefully we all come out stronger for it - accepted or rejected.

Just received an email informif an update on the application and ...got waitlisted 🙁 interviewed on 10/28

Does anyone know what's the chance of getting accepted from the waitlist?
