2014-2015 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone else with an application receipt on or around 7/18 not heard anything? I am worried that I am missing emails.

I got a receipt on 7/15 and got an invite last week. You'll probably hear something pretty soon.. I'm sure they just have a ton of applications to sift through that were submitted in that time period

II today! For those of you who have gotten a II do yo just select your preferred interview location and complete the secondary and that is all you have to do? Somehow my preferred location of Indy got changed to Muncie. Was clicking around to see if there were any interview dates available right now and can't change it anymore. Oh well.

Bad news... it appears I have not met the sociology requirement lol. I graduated this past winter so I am not sure what I am going to do about this. Anyone in a similar boat?

In case anyone cares, 29 mcat (10/8/11) , 3.75 cGPA, OOS with strong state ties.

They change the interview location a lot for people despite preference. Sometimes schools will accept people but expect that the requirements are taken before starting med school. So maybe it would be possible to take in spring if you're accepted. Probably should call or email to ask

WE HAVE TO TAKE SOCIOLOGY??:inpain:

I have a green check on the "prerequisite courses have been met" status, so im hoping that means i'm good for prereqs.
on another note, does anyone know the grading for IUSM? is it P/F?

Had to reschedule my interview because the date they gave me I had another interview on. They said it would be at least a month delay. A little bummed that it has to be pushed back so far.

Social and Behavioral Science

I have the green check too. So I hope I meet the requirement.

From the website:
  • Complete one course in each discipline Social and Behavioral Sciences (i.e., General Psychology, Lifespan Development, Introduction to Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Ethnography, African American Studies, etc.)
The Admissions Committee reserves the right to determine which courses will fulfill its requirements.

I believe it is honors, high pass, pass, and fail. Most of the information about the school is on their website.

Hey guys so I got the secondary and II 2 days ago... We just need to complete the secondary, select our preferred interview location, and fill out those additional forms that is all we have to do correct?

I am just wondering how long after you guys completed these forms did you receive your actual interview date? Right now when I long in the application portal it says my preferred location is in Muncie and below it is says: "There are no upcoming interviews scheduled for you at this time. You will receive an email from the admissions office 2-4 weeks prior to your scheduled interview." So I take it there is nothing else to do but wait?

Yeah it took me 3 wks for a date to be given to me

Right now, it is the honors, high pass, pass, and fail system. It is changing to pass/fail next year.

Are they changing to 1.5 year per-clinical this year or next?

I haven't heard anything about the change to a 1.5 year pre-clinical curriculum, and with the implementation of the new curriculum next fall, I don't know if that is even a thing. If it is, then that is going to be interesting. I feel like their site hasn't been updated to the full extent and I personally feel we are getting the short end of the stick for applying with a need to know the new curriculum.

Has anyone else noticed a significant number of broken links and/or outdated pdfs?

EDIT: I'm extremely nervous about tomorrow! Good luck to all those that apply! Hopefully those of us in Indy can get lunch?

I found the website to be confusing, poorly organized, and contradictory. I seriously studied that thing for the longest time and still felt like I didn't know that much about how the school operates.

lol. i thought i was just crazy! thank goodness someone feels the same. there's a couple vids on youtube about IUSM and the regional camps as well so i think those helped me. also you just got to keep clicking around!

I did find this after digging. Under the header Curriculum Framework, it mentions 18-months. Am I reading this wrong?
http://medicine.iu.edu/ume/curriculum/curriculum-revision/

Maybe someone can ask in the upcoming interviews:

I interview in about 9 hours +/- a few... Lol. (I should probably sleep..) I'll certainly ask if I remember. It certainly seems like the curriculum is changing to an 18 month pre-clinical study but I'm curious how they define a month (I'm not trolling!).. Is the 18 months including or excluding summers? From what I've read, only MS3s and MS4s start in June.

Good luck tomorrow...and I agree it is coming down to how they define the months.

Good luck!! Let us know how it goes. I still don't have my date yet..

Wow, that was about a tenth of the terror and stress that I thought the interview would entail. Everyone was super-chill, which really helped me relax. My interview wasn't perfect but overall went favorably, I think. Pleasantly surprised at the campus. The students were very friendly too. I could definitely see myself being happy there. Hopefully I hear some good news next month! 😀

I agree completely. The entire process was a lot more relaxed than I had anticipated. Were you in the 11 AM interview group? The entire time at the 12 PM info session I was just thinking.. "Hmm... I wonder who here lurks on SDN?!"

No, I interviewed in the afternoon. 🙂

Is anyone up to doing a detailed account? Did they talk about the new curriculum and grading changes?

We were told, despite what it says on the website at the moment, that the new curriculum likely will not be put into effect next year after all. Probably the year after that. So the new curriculum is unlikely to affect the fall 2015 matriculants, apparently.

that sucks i was really liking the idea of p/f

Glad to hear the interviews went well. I like interviewers who just try to get to know you, and aren't dead set on proving how smart they are or how uncomfortable they can make you feel.
IUSM is the only school I'm applying to. In State. Non-Traditional.
Would be glad to hear more from others who were invited to interview. Stats for other in-state applicants, timeline from submission to invite, etc.

Just curious, are you applying as Early Admission since you only apply IU?

Unfortunately, I didn't meet the criteria for Early Admission. I went to 5 undergrad schools while traveling with the military, ended up with B/B+ average grades. I don't think my chances are very high, but maybe I can use this application cycle to learn more about my weaknesses and get advice on how to fix them for next year.

I have a friend exactly like in your situation. I surely can understand that.

As you managed to make it to the II and in state, it means all your numbrs are compatible.

My best wishes to you to be accepted.

Hi Everyone,
I interviewed yesterday at 845AM. My interview was very laid back, but I heard others were not. I suppose it is really on the personality of your interviewers. Can't wait till Oct 1!

How long did it take you all to get your interview dates after your invites?

Got a letter of rejection from IU SOM yesterday, I'm wondering if there's a red flag somewhere on my application that I don't know about? OOS but with strong state ties (grew up in Indiana through high school and my dad used to work at IU). 3.6GPA, 36MCAT, 2 Publications, and years of research/clinical work/volunteering.

I imagine it is the GPA. Someone earlier got rejected with a 3.7, called, and that is what they told him.

I just got an II here! OOS with less than a 3.7 gpa. Can anyone who interviewed at the Gary location tell me about their experience? I am considering choosing there because it is a much shorter drive. Are there student hosts available?

For the deans evaluation, did you guys pick it up from your school's office and scan it into an email or have that office send it by post? Sorry if this has been addressed earlier!

I think they want it by post.

I was also wondering if you pick your date at all? Or are they completely assigned?

They assign them. I had zero input (well I suppose I could have turned down the day they assigned me).

Was it about 4 weeks out from when you received the interview invite?
