2014-2015 Johns Hopkins University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II! Dream school. Their vaccine research and advocacy is like no other.

Submitted 8 July. Complete 21 July. Invited on 22 Aug.

Good to know that I am yet to be processed--submitted 7/28. I kept fearing that my app might be so uninteresting to Hopkins that they doesn't even bother to complete it.
Same, submitted on 7/28 too. I honestly didn't even realize they hadn't sent me a complete email, so I thought they'd just passed over my application and weren't interested...

Sent all my stuff in exactly one month ago, just got the complete email today. womp womp

Hi everyone, I got an II and I was wondering what the interview format is? I can't seem to find it. Is it just student and faculty interview?

I submitted my application 7/23 and still have not received a complete email!
Is anyone else in the same boat?
should I send an email to make sure my application is not lost or something? :/

I'm in the same situation.

Johns Hopkins has a really cool Facebook page by the Office of Admissions. Was just browsing it and saw this post from August 18: "We still have about eight weeks to go before the October 15th deadline. We are all quite stunned that the number of verified applications received are double the number we received in past years. I haven't analyzed why this is, but I suspect it may be because of the change in policy regarding community college courses (which we now accept for the prerequisites). It may also be that AMCAS is much further along with their verifications (last year was slower than usual), but even so, we are well ahead of the 2013 numbers as well."

Dang.
This is terrifying...

Submitted 7/31, completed today 9/2.

How did you guys pick who to contact for student hosting? I skimmed through the list and didn't see anyone from my undergrad. Don't know if I should just go eenie meenie miney mo🙄

So I got an II here today... the problem is that it's scheduled for 9/25, when I'm supposed to interview at Duke on 9/22, Penn on 9/24, and Columbia on 9/26. I'm planning to be on the east coast the whole week, so it would be possible for me to make it, but I really don't want 4 interviews of that importance in 5 days. Do you all think this is worth calling to reschedule, or should I just deal with it? I don't want to be a pain in their side, but I also really want these invites to go well.

We should all have such problems. 😉

I think you should go for it. Unless you know yourself and that you would mess it up.

Is anyone else having problems accessing the interview information pdf that was sent out in the emails? The link they sent me a few weeks ago now directs me to "page not found." Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Submitted 8/1, complete 9/17. So excited to just be complete haha

Submitted 8/12 and still no complete e-mail..... Oh boy this wait is brutal

What's the timeframe on hearing about interview rescheduling? I received an II on 9/19 and emailed back to reschedule the given date within 30 min, but I still haven't heard back about a new date. When should I call the office to find out? I wouldn't normally be this neurotic, but train/airline tix get higher by the day...

EDIT: Just heard back. FYI They were very nice about rescheduling, and were able to honor my preferred date.

Got an II earlier today! I'd post an ecstatic gif to convey my excitement, but I'm having major struggles with my wifi. Complete on 8/5.

Invite was for a mid-October date (they assign you a single date, though I think you can petition to reschedule), so there must of be plenty of action still to come. Good luck to all!

Not much time to make travel arrangements, huh? 😉

What does the complete email say? Is there one directly after you submit the supplemental and one one month later? I submitted first week of August and have not received a complete email if it is different from the one that's immediately sent out, should I call them?

The initial email subject is "Thank you for your application!" while the subject of the later email is "Confirmation of Compete Application." It wouldn't hurt to call if you still haven't gotten the complete email.

Hahaha, I'm going to pretend like tickets are going to be a semi-reasonable price. 😉 But for you, JHU... I would do (almost) anything.

Hope you get some well-deserved Hopkins love shortly!

Interview day here was great this week. I think that people who say that Hopkins is in a really ghetto area were exaggerating. There are plenty of awesome neighborhoods around. By the way, if you haven't been to Baltimore before, make sure to walk around the inner harbor and to fells point. I'm definitely enamored by the city. I'm hoping for good news come December!

I accidentally left my interview packet at the admissions office. Can anyone that interviewed here PM me the email that we're supposed to use for updates etc? (The card in our interview day folder)

Submitted 8/19. Still not marked complete. What's the deal Hopkins? (Really hope I have a shot here)

Since others may be interested as well: You should send your updates directly to Valerie Mazza. I'll PM you her email address. Good luck everyone 🙂

Has anyone who submitted on 8/19 or later been marked as complete yet? I submitted 8/25, and my roommate submitted 8/20 and neither of us are complete.

Hey Pocket I submitted on 9/1 and got the complete email on the 24th.
Hope that helps!

Glad the interview went well!

I have to say, though, it's really not an exaggeration - take this from someone who lives and works downtown, very close to the hospital. If you go literally two blocks north of the hospital (Monument and Madison Streets), things go downhill pretty fast. Also the area between the hospital and several blocks south (until Baltimore Street) is definitely not very safe, either. And the further east you go (beginning just a few blocks from the hospital) north of Baltimore Street, the worse it gets as well - lots of violent crime in that direction. The areas owned by Hopkins are considerably safer (and nicer-looking, of course) because of the security and whatnot, but outside those boundaries you really do need to be careful. Before Hopkins started buying up a lot of "real-estate", the area was really rundown and unsafe. Like any city, though, you always just need to be on your guard. Generally, though, the further south (i.e. closer to the harbor) you go, the nicer the neighborhoods are.

But you're right, there are definitely some great neighborhoods as well. Fells Point and Canton are great, and the Inner Harbor is beautiful as well (especially in the summer), though very tourist-geared. Orioles games are always awesome to go to (I have season tickets), and single-game tickets are a lot more affordable than most stadiums.

I've visited Baltimore a couple times. It was striking to me how the vibes changed literally block to block. One would be fine, busy, safe and the next would suddenly be barren and decidedly ominous. Unlike other cities that I've visited that had "good" and "bad" neighborhoods or areas. Baltimore seemed to change street-to-street. But yes to being aware of yourself and surroundings and such as you should anywhere.

If you are visiting Baltimore, I recommend this place for a delightful cocktail: http://makeabaddecision.com/Bad_Decisions/Home.html. Be sure to have a taxi on speed dial so you can make a good decision on your way out. 🙂

Any insights as to why they are apparently marking things complete at random? I sent my stuff in about 8 weeks ago and not a peep yet 😳

I'm completely 100% guessing but since there are two major dates for announcing acceptances they might only be marking applicants as complete that they plan to interview/consider for the first acceptance batch. I assume the most competitive get theirs marked complete quicker.
