The pattern seeking part of my brain wonders if there is any connection between this new post on Hopkins's awesome FB page and the recent posts here on SDN. Well, if there is connection, it wouldn't be the first time that adcom respond to questions and rumors on SDN. Last year Michigan had some updates directly towards clarifying issues talked about on SDN. Anyway, it always make me smile to read these posts. Would have loved to meet the person writing these posts. Hopkins! Please look at my file harder!
"Good Morning,
I recently read a statement by someone who believed that our admissions process was biased in favor of residents of Maryland and against non-Maryland residents. This is quite false: we are a private institution and we admit students from any state or country, as long as they meet our requirements. The number varies from year to year, but typically the number one or two state for enrolled students is Maryland. Many premed students want familial support throughout their time in medical school, so for some of the enrolled students, this is more a reflection of the desire to attend a medical school near their family. However, since California is often number two (and this year, number one), that isn't always the case.
Furthermore, just as we have no preference for which state a student is from, the same is true for colleges and universities: there are no preferences given to any institution in the selection process.
Have a good week."
