2014-2015 Johns Hopkins University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's almost unnerving how helpful their social media outreach is.
the best part was when the dean apologized for not being able to post for a few days due to other obligations.

So the FB post was true! There are still IIs to give! Great!

Actually, the student interviewers only have access to your personal statement and secondaries (although don't always read the secondaries). They don't have access to your stats, activities, awards or anything else. The faculty interviewer has access (and probably has read) everything. Good luck in interviews!

Just a few more weeks til the first wave of decisions...so exciting yet terrifying at the same time...
I am counting down to this! Best of luck to you! Just to double check that I correctly remember what he said: if we were in the first batch of interviews we'll be notified of either acceptance, rejection, or waitlist in mid december by email (typically Dec 15-16), right?

Good luck to you too!

Yep if I remember correctly, on my interview date, the dean said a decision by mid dec., which to me means anytime in dec up to around the 15th or 16th could be the date.

The wait's been so long and just thinking about the decision is starting to make me sick to the stomach...

I was wondering if they took updates pre-interview invite and found this on their FAQ:

"...we cannot accept any updates or additional information. Any extraneous materials received will be destroyed."

o.o So that definitely answers my question lol.

What's the cutoff for the "first interview group"?

Does this also apply to post interview updates? I think it must, right?

Nope! I was told on my day that updates could be sent to Ms. Mazza (her email is on that card in the interview packet).

She was super awesome and sent a confirmation message literally 5 minutes after I sent my update. +10 brownie points to JHU. Most schools didn't even say a peep regarding my updates, which made me wonder if they even got them.

Good luck guys! :luck: I keep forgetting decisions are coming up so close. I'm honestly not expecting anything from Hopkins, but desperately hoping for mercy.

Would people who stayed with hosts recommend it? It seems like most of the students don't live in campus housing? Any hotel suggestions that are close by to the school?

Absolutely recommend. My student hosts were utterly invaluable in providing me with a better understanding of the JH philosophy and student body composition, philosophy, mentality, etc. I stayed with a pair of students who lived 15 minutes from the admissions office, and they took me to a class with them in the morning. It really wasn't a long walk, and I spent the entire time talking to my hosts anyway.

10/10 would recommend student hosting.

LESS THAN TWO WKS till first round of letters go out!! I am too excited...fingers crossed! This is a total dream school.

I could go on for days about how amazing my student host was. I was also able to go to class and receive amazing insight into life as a JHU med student and life in Baltimore.

I think you will be shocked at how awesome the people at JHU are. Of the schools I have been to, JHU has had the most impressive comraderie and chemistry.

Sorry if already answered, but is Hopkins receptive to in-the-area emails?

Hi everyone!

I live close to Hopkins, so if anyone needs a place to stay the night before the interview, feel free to send me a message!

Any confident predictions on what day specifically the first wave of decisions will come out?

I think they said Dec. 15th, which I'm kind of banking on, but not sure how confident anyone can be about it.

Right. Seems to me they said December 15 solely because that is right in the middle of december, and they said decisions would come out towards the middle of December. I wouldn't be surprised if it was anywhere from say Dec 12-18. Also, is it possible that you could get pushed back at that point to the next pool, or will the decision be made for sure if you interviewed prior to that date?

In past years it seems like quite a few people got their decision pushed back to feb, but I don't think we've received any indication that they were behind schedule for this year? I think the 12th-18th window is accurate!

Hi guys,

I feel incredibly fortunate to have received an II last night. I replied within a couple hours confirming my interview date. To those who have received II's-- should I be expecting a reply confirming that the email was received and that my interview spot is reserved? Hate to stress about it but that 24 hour deadline scares me and I've had plenty of emails simply get lost in cyber space in the past. Definitely don't want to send another email/call and look unprofessional so I appreciate anyone else's experience.

EDIT: I received a confirmation about 20 minutes after posting 😛. Thanks for the reply ASD2019!

Yes. They will reply confirming your confirmation! Took about a day or two for them to reply.

Thank you! I just saw this-- so does that mean any interview after 10/31 is in the "second batch" of interviews? is it rolling after 12/15 then?

If I'm not mistaken Hopkins releases decisions on 3 dates (mid dec, late jan, and late march). So it is semi-rolling, but decisions are only sent out on these specified dates.

do we receive any kind of confirmation after sending post-interview updates? Also, the thank you notes go through the admissions office right?
yup i got one the morning after i sent mine in! and yup through admissions

So according to sdn, the past two cycles the first acceptances were sent out on Dec 12...

Oh noes. Don't tell me that. I have a very long meeting (plus a presentation to some investors) on Friday and will be fidgeting/checking my phone the whole while. 😱

Actually they were accepted on Dec 12 of 2011 as well... so that's n = 3

o______________o
Just to satisfy my curiosity even further, what time did they get these decisions?
as phone calls throughout the late morning and early afternoon... so no real help there....

*Edit* not sure if last year was phone calls or emails but they started posing around 2pm

Oooh.... at my interview day they mentioned an email. (I may have also been tired/delirious from travel). Anyone else know?

My student host said it was a phone call last year, but I also remember the email thing from the interview. I'm betting it will be a call for acceptance and an email for anything else.
